It's the same system. The 'unlock' part is to get the perks/archetype past bronze. Equipment slots are all unlocked but require you to have whatever equipment you want to use, which you can get in packs, reward paths, or on the market.
Do I have a set amount of slots? If I get a bat I want to equip will it equip it for my entire team or what? Sorry just confused on this stuff
There are cosmetic things you can equip to your whole team, yes, but they do not affect stats.
The stuff you equip to your ball player do affect his stats though. You have one slot for each equip piece and there are a ton of equip slots. Socks, bat, sunglasses, batting gloves, fielding glove, shin guard, catcher stuff, etc.Note: all of this equipment stuff is different than the archetype and the slots associated to that 'build'. I think you start off with one archetype and 2 perk slots. It goes up (another perk slot or two) at some point from what I've seen, but I havent gotten there yet.

Looks like a lot of people are getting booted after the final boss. I had one clean run then another W negated by the server gremlins. I just can't justify playing showdown (a mode i really dont enjoy even though I havent lost in awhile) with fairly good odds that it wont count. Too much pain...
It's not "fairly good odds". I've beaten 44 showdowns and only 1 didn't count correctly.
Perhaps, i'm 50% at failure with a much lower sample size. But I've also had 14 conquest games not count which hurts too, just not as much. That's probably 15% of all conquest games played. If there is a 5% chance of showdown not counting, I'm not risking my time.
by that point 75% of it is probably your wifi
What if I told you my ps5 was connected via LAN directly to gigabit fiber internet that I monitor constantly and has not gone down at all in 3 months? Running steady at 800mps up/down from my playstation. I was able to uninstall and redownload/install the game over the weekend in 15 mins. I was trying everything.

Yea game feels fine. The servers are a pile of dog doodoo. And some other bugs, but the game play itself isnt bad. I've only seen a couple weird things in the field (a couple diamond/gold fielders just run past a pop up and not lock on properly) and a passed ball to the back stop somehow allow a 50 speed runner get to second.

I can't get past the server issues to even think about game play. Last year was so amazing and it was my first year of playing a game with an ultimate team mode that seemed to do it right. I sang its' praises. This year, my god, I may as well be playing on 2ks servers. It's atrocious.
I'm writing this after 5 mins of playing and getting an unhandled server exception. Yesterday 6 conquest games didn't count. Servers generally slow as hell otherwise. This is truly awful. This isnt the same experience as last year by any stretch of the imagination. 2k, 2 freaking K, has better handle on their servers with 356t23562352345 more players interacting. And I despise that game.

I've had atleast 15 (unhandled service exceptions) in the last few days. Always come after completing a mission or conquest game or showdown. You get no credit for anything. Has cost me stubs on showdown. On a conquest game I won it said same thing then referred to a friendly guitar not recording the game stats. How is the relevant in a conquest game?
Same. I'm up to 14 of these in conquest and 1 in showdown (only played 2 - refuse to lose that much time to another one)

enough forsight to wait to play MP?
So yeah everyone deserves to have prestiged cards regardless if online or offline as well!
It’s not a question of being “deserving”. You bought the game, you can access any feature/card you want.
I just don’t want your offline experience to compromise my online experience.
How does someone aquiring a prestige card offline have to do with your online experience? I'm confused?
If you face against person prestige in h2h aren't you both online?
I feel like it's a bit elitest for those who play alot online and prestiged players. It's more "i did it in way that was harder, so you should have to do it that way too". Let's be honest, most prestiged cards aren't significantly better than the non prestiged version. It's bragging rights and a sense of accomplishment more than having a much better card.
I say, take the same approach that they already do when they have a path that includes online and offline. Let online count essentially double and be done with it. If someone wants to spent 30 hours playing rookie cpu over and over to get those +3s, have at it. Online will get you there in 15 or whatever plus rewards from whatever online mode you were playing. When I saw someone with lou gehrig or even babe earlier, I was like, ok this guy put in work. When I saw people having all those finest cards done in a week, I was less impressed given you could use them in events that were notoriously generous.
Or........ if you prestige offline it only counts on All Star difficulty or higher eliminating the rookie grind altogether and that way attributes be same
I wouldn't mind that. I think rookie is harder to hit on than all star anyway lol
Not sure if it would be annoying to code to look for difficulty and then apply stat counting or not. We know they have issues sometimes with similar things..

I don’t want to play a bunch of prestige cards somebody grinded for vs cpu.
I never understand why people care how others acquire cards...l am a veteran maybe all star player I won’t beat a legend type player but would like for enjoy cards of my favorite players
Especially considering that people who grind vs the CPU for cards are weak players, which is why they play vs CPU. A good online player knows that it's about using cards that you are good with not just using the best cards. Give me a God squad and put me up against any top player and let them only choose gold or less and they will beat me 10 out of 10 times.
how are offline players 'weak' players? most of us don't play online because of the bs and win at all costs mentality. i want to play someone baseball, not run around the bases and bunt dance. that makes me a bad online player?
I don't think they meant it as all encompasing, but a lot of people dont play online much and often it's because they're not 'good'. "Weak" is just poor word choice.
Im sure there are alot of really good offline players who can compete online quite well. People with Ruth/Gehrig for instance who barely play online, are probably pretty decent. Obviously, not everyone but online vs offline is quite different, even as the same difficulty level. Dealing with the yahoos and not letting it get to you is a skill good online players have too... I can beat up the CPU on HOF 95% of the time and all star 99.9% of the time, but my win % online on all star is closer to 70%. Online players are much harder than the CPU, even if I win more often than not. -

Ok, I'm gonna try it in 21, thanks
I think veteran was the most bang for your buck, even for less skilled players. I won the WS every time I did it (3 x) on veteran as a first year player who was pretty bad. I think it gave 60 or so TA points and took approx 7 hours (not sure where the OP got 18 hours, that's crazy talk).
I think the increases pasts veteran weren't as significant to justify the potential of missing Ws and those associated points. But if it was a sure thing, then go for it. Although, doing it on HOF or Legend probably wasn't the move if you're just going for TA. If you can win the WS every time on HOF then you probably aren't having trouble with showdown if TA was your goal
Don't even know where to start to respond to this.
Dynamic difficulty will recognize the difficulty you are playing at, so if he is playing at veteran level he will still get veteran level rewards. But if he sets it to dynamic and finishes on all star he will get all star rewards. Which is significantly higher by up to approx. 7 TA points per per reward gate.
As far as me saying 18 hrs that was based off of 2 things really.
1rst dynamic diificulty if you reach HOF or Legend then common sense dictates the game will be harder and obviouly take longer.
2nd reason is that it was pointed out in the developer stream that it could take between 12 to 18 hour to complete.
Now if it takes you 7 hrs to complete on veteran and lets say 14 hours on dynamic? And the person playing on dynamic lets say reaches HOF the person playing on dynamic is going to get HOF rewards immediately.
Whereas the person playing on veteran will have to play through twice to reach same level of rewards as the dynamic difficulty player which equates to 7hrs on veteran time 2 playthroughs equal 14 hrs to get same rewards dynamic difficulty did in 1 playthrough.
And again Dynamic can be used as a tool for the player to see what level of gameplay suits them. So not sure why you referred to it as crazy talk but i hope this clears thing up for you.
I had a long winded reply but I'll keep it short.
Dynamic Difficulty is GREAT for figuring out where you stand as the game will increase/decrease difficulty for you based on how you play. It's cool really.
Solely based on effort/time spent, it's terrible to use for collecting team affinity vouchers. MTO in general is awful compared to Showdown, especially after they increased the voucher rewards.
For time/vs and only considering MTO, it's been widely accepted veteran is the best. You'll end up with around 45 affinity points in 7-8 hours on average. All star will get you 50-55 depending on how good you are, and add 10 for each higher, but you'll probably not max it out because, well it's harder, so you may hit that 45ish by maxing it out on veteran, but on all star even if you do win it all, you may hit 52, and HOF 60, etc.
Choosing dynamic averages the level you played on within each gate. Since you're starting at rookie, you'll probably average out at veteran if you end up playing on all star by the end. You could've saved yourself by playing on veteran the whole time.
My apologies about 'crazy talk'. I simply meant that regarding the time taken. No clue how it could take up to 18 hours to play. Really not sure how it could take 12. Perhaps you're taking every post season series to the max games and almost doubling the games played? I could see that pushing 10 hour or so. Once again, if it's that hard' you're adding time which is killing your time/affinity. adding 50% (8-12) or 100% (8-16) even more illustrated my point as to why dynamic isn't good for TA. You could've gotten 90 points doing veteran twice over 16 hours vs at best 65 at best if you played dynamic and ended up at Legend over 15 hours (averaged your 12-18).
Ok i see your take has merit fair enough. I don't play showdown b/c it cost stubs. I shouldn't have to pay stubs to play a mode but that whole other story.
The point i was getting with Dynamic difficulty being a tool was to be able to use in other places throughout diamond dynasty.
If as a new player or new to MLBTS DD this tool as an evalution method could give user the confidence to play other modes on higher difficulties like moments or ranked seasons to earn more valueble rewards. If that makes sense?
No worries, I Get you. Dynamic difficulty is a nice tool to let the CPU tell you how you're doing and adjust the difficulty on the fly. I focused on using it as a way to get TA, where I think it's detrimental. Unless, once again, you dont care about making the most of your Time for TA points. Then it's pretty solid to tell you where you are without you having to adjust. Unfortunately, in DD you really have few cases where you can use Dynamic Difficulty, it's all set for you and you just have to play through it (outside of conquest I guess and play vs cpu)
I personally rather pick the difficulty I plan on playing on or want to play on and just leave it there so i'll get better, but everyone is different.
I actually dislike showdown, but learned to tolerate it. The stub charge to start actually is negligible. I'm just not a fan of draft style modes when I want to play with the cards I worked hard for, not to mention that some start at rookie difficulty and ramp up to all star. That changing of difficulty really messes with me. I'd rather the whole thing on all star than having to start on rookie and go up!

@chiprocks1_xbl said in What should be the first thing I do in the game when The Show 21 drops?:
Thanks for the helpful tips. Appreciate it. I forgot to ask before (new to The Show franchise), but does the game have anything like Legends Play? Can I create a team with the likes of Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Cy Young, etc....? And then play using said team, be it for online competition or offline play? Just curious.
In diamond dynasty (the fantasy team/ultimate team mode) you can do just that. I have every play you listed on my team for MLB The Show 20.
In other modes, not really, but sorta. You can use different rosters and such and play with those players, but I'm really unsure if you can play with them online. The play now stuff and franchise is current rosters to my knowledge, same with march to october. I FEEL like you can practice with them, but havent played other modes to see how/if you could play with them outside of tweaking rosters and playing offline vs the cpu. I'll defer to someone else who has more experience outside of DD and MTO, maybe they know more. But from the little I do know, it's limited or requires some finessing.
DD does let you play with them without restriction (outside of special events which sometimes restricts certain cards) in all it's modes as long as you have the card.

If it's DD you're interested in, I'd look at all the offline stuff that has rewards, especially cards and knock those out. Prioritize cards you want first obviously, but don't neglect rewards you get another the way if it has a 'path'.
There will probably be a starter conquest, probably a starter showdown, and easy to complete collections that will jump start your team, start there. Then look at the programs (inning/player) and knock those out along with conquest. Once you are feeling froggy, hop into an event or two and maybe some ranked games. You have to get good and put in a lot of time for the best rewards and will be competing online with people who spend money on the game right away. Money helps at first but quickly becomes a non factor as time spend ends up being more valuable after a couple months (so many good free cards).
There will be a TON of free cards you can get via moments or other ways. Knock as many of those out as you can/want. You will have a solid team in no time.
