100% agree. And as you said what speed its set at isn't really important. They can tinker and test that to find the perfect speed that appeals to players of all skill levels

That speed doesn't exist, no way to please everybody.

But how do you know? People will only oppose because they prefer what they're used to, they're afraid to try new things. Imagine a top 20 player opposing the idea of universal pitch speeds of All-Star as we know it now, but this player only takes into account the speeds with the giant PCI as we know it now. There's no way for anyone to accurately assess the speeds when the new PCI size and area of solid contact is implemented. That's when stick skills will really start to matter.

Also, imagine how more dominant pitchers like Maddux will be. The pitch speeds won't be as fast, but on HOF and Legend your margin of error with the PCI will be so tiny, it will be a tremendous challenge. I believe THAT should be the challenge in this game, not the ability to swing asap gambling fastball and pull a homer on a non-PCI early swing.

As a general rule, it's impossible to please everybody, no matter what that thing is. That is of course does not mean nothing should ever be done, but there isn't a "perfect' speed.

Well I agree there is no such thing as perfection, but I'm not arguing for perfection. I'm arguing for change.

When you play an event on HOF the pitching speed feels diff than RE HOF… I think the pitching speed on HOF events is the perfect universal pitching speed

I think it's hard to say what would be the desired pitch speed, because we haven't seen small PCI's since forever. Making that the most important aspect of hitting, I don't think you wanna make pitches too fast especially if they're gonna continue with outlier. Or you'd get very low scoring games all the time and that will be frustrating as well. That's why I said I'm not debating the actual pitch speeds, they need to test and test and test again to find that sweet spot.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't 16 pretty much the same pitch speeds with different size PCI's for each level?. I really think they should get rid of the outer PCI that let's you foul off balls you should never reach. Get rid of outlier completely simply because yeah there are plenty of guys that throw 100 but do they do it for 9 innings? Just thinking out loud.

Yes it was, 17 too to some extent. The buckshot in the feedback was extremely small. But both those games did have different pitch speeds.

SDS

I agree with everyone on this, but I think you are right about this not being a likely change.

The game plays the way it does presumably because that is how it was intended to play. Any change to put more emphasis on user input seems to get heavily watered down and countered in the name of “gameplay balance” or whatever we want to call it.

SDS

When did they start changing pitch speeds? I started playing online in 18 and I remember the pitch speeds were generally slower but I don’t recall if they changed as you moved up. I know 19 changed similar to how it is now but I thought 18 was universal.

Pitch speeds have always been faster on the higher difficulties, it's just that in 18 the pitch speeds in general were kinda slow which many people hated because the PCI also covered like half of the plate. Which made it extremely hard to get people out and stick skills didn't really matter all that much in that game.

SDS

Good start would be to get rid of Outlier. I don't know, why it's in the game at all, it's so unrealistic and total pain in the a..

I actually agree. I liked it initially but I changed my mind. To me it's not so much that I can't hit the 102, but if you sit on that 102 in a 2 strike count and you get a good tunneled offspeed pitch, you're gonna be defenseless a lot of the times on the higher difficulties. Not only that, but I've pitched gems myself with DeGrom/Verlander where I can just pinpoint 102 after 102 for 9 innings straight. That is indeed unrealistic.

What? I don't think that's accurate. I've been playing since 15 and as far as I know, pitch speeds went up and down depending on difficulty.

SDS

But isn’t outlier the main reason that a lot of people quit playing online... That and Edward Cabrera’s unrealistic outlier sinker... I’m down for universal pitch speeds with the pci getting smaller, I’d love an indicator with what level your playing on, like a banner on the scoreboard like the did with World Series... Outlier needs to be reworked.

If that were the case 18 would have seen the same fluctuation and HoF would have been more enjoyable. 19 was the first one to introduce it.

Sorry, I don't think that's accurate. In 18 the pitch speeds in general were just slow, too slow according to many. But there was a difference between the difficulties. They also had pitch speed sliders in the options menu.

You've always had the ability to adjust pitch speed offline, but online was stagnant to whatever SDS set it to. Are 17s servers still online? We should test it, because I am willing to bet on this lol.

Heck I even remember getting above 1800 in 16 and just not really feeling a difference pitch wise. It was just a smaller PCI.

Hahaha dude I am im the exact same boat but feel the complete opposite. I only ever remember the PCI shrinking.

SDS

@ikasnu_psn said in Universal pitch speeds:

Well that we can agree on, the PCI was most definitely tiny at the higher difficulties and the buckshot in the feedback was about the size of the baseball on legend.

SDS

Yes, yes, yes.

This has been my stance for a while, the skill gap should be dictated by pci placement and true outcomes rather than who is willing to buy a monitor and can time outlier.

Unlike the latter, I’d argue that pci placement can be practiced and improved upon. Especially if dealing with universal pitch speeds so you can actually get used to timing.

If also add things like actually needing correct timing to fall a ball off. Seriously, if someone is very late or early, that should be a swing and miss. Things like that would make up for the speed difference, it would make more pitchers useful, and I think it would keep a skill gap.

Note that I'm not arguing how fast those universal pitch speeds should be, that's a whole separate debate. As long as they're equal across the board, that's all I care about.

I volunteer to be the guy who picks the speed. Spoiler - it will be somewhere between AllStar and HOF.

SDS - email me when you have the demo ready.

I second this!! All those in favor show you’re regular voting sign.
