I just have to laugh at this point. I have yet to see anything in this game that truly makes logical sense to me this year. The entire game just feels like the Set 1 and Set 2 binders to me with a bunch of random stuff just thrown in there.

I think the expiring cards thing is absolutely insane- didn’t really think about it when the game first released but now that we are getting closer to to season 3 and set 1 cards won’t be useable I really feel cheated
I spent money/stubs on some of these cards they’re my property. I’ve built their averages up and I want to continue to use them and decide on my own if I want to replace them or not
Imagine going to footlocker spending money and buying 3 pairs of sneakers and the manager comes out and says- “thank you for your purchase, you can only wear the brown sneakers for a month and then you have to burn them”
like this makes no sense
The main issue I have is with people who say that they have no problem with it because there will be a lot of great other cards coming out to make up for it. A lot of these people only play online and only play with specific cards so they aren’t going to care. However, if there are people out there who got on people for complaining about the sets and now will be complaining themselves, that’s their issue. I don’t have sympathy for hypocrites.
People like me will be completely screwed. I play a lot of team build teams from one team from TA. Who wants to use a bunch of live series Tigers?

Yea this is beyond strange- well at least to me it is because the show is the only game I play. But according to others the show is just following suit of other games like madden etc etc
I’m just kinda wiping my hands with it and I’ll see what happens in July with the cards I’ve acquired
I’m just going to play ranked until then and if I don’t have a good enough team to compete in July because they’ve taken away my cards then I’ll just find another hobby I guess
Sucks because I really do enjoy the show and baseball but it’s outta my hands now

Just sell your set 1 cards and buy the new ones. Think of it as going to Footlocker and getting the new Jordans, only to find out a months later that there is a way cooler version that just came out. You go back to Footlocker and exchange the "old" Jordans for the newer ones. Problem solved.
Now if you locked in your expensive Set 1 cards, that's on you bud. Think of that as taking your new Jordans on a hike through a swamp. Can't help you there.
So what you’re saying is that you know for sure that set one cards will be forever obsolete and useless in month?
I have no idea in regards to that bc sds has not said anything at all about what’s going to happen with those cards.
How do you know you won’t need those cards in the future for a big collection?
And most people locked in most of their cards from Set 1 to get chipper, babe, Pedro.
Appreciate your tongue in cheek response but it’s not really a viable option as set 1 cards aren’t nearly as much as they were previously- except for a few.
You want me to sell 99 Griffey to buy a new 99 Griffey and that’s what I’m m saying is absolutely laughable about this whole process
Nope, don't know anything for sure, just offering a simple solution. I'm one of those people that competed the set 1 collection with the majority being No sell cards you get for playing the game and the rest were cards close to QS value. It is definitely viable.
If you don't want to sell your 99 Griffey then don't. Use him as your wild slot until the better 99 Griffey comes along. Sell him then. Every year there are multiple cards for players. Last year think Smoltz had like 5 or something (Or was that 21). I really don't understand what the issue is here.

You were never forced or mandated to put on Griffey down and play with another lol
Do you know how much grinding was needed to complete set 1 to get chipper babe and Pedro?
Now you can’t even use them for the rest of the year lol
I value my time a little more than that- lol m sorry
But if you have hours upon hours upon hours to grind a game for cards that sds will tell you when you can or cannot use them then you’re just a much better person then me in that regards that doesn’t mind to spend their time on things that will be useless in two months

You can use them the rest of the year in the wild card slot and as a Braves fan, Chipper is my guy. So yeah, it was worth the grind to have that card to play with for the rest of the year.
In any case, I was just trying to offer you a solution, but you clearly do not want to hear it and prefer to stand pat in your bitterness (while you LOL obsessively).
To that my friend, good luck to you and I bid you adieu.

My gripe is very clearly written out in the OP
This game has turned into a money grab because they release cards that are only obtainable thru buying packs or buying the card outright
And then they tell you when you can’t and can use it.
That makes no sense- and on top of that you have to do tons of hours to grind for collections cards that, what for it, they tell when you can or cannot use them
Sds was NEVER like this
And if you’re ok with it then you’ll be ok when sds is just like madden or 2k come next year or the year after
You enjoy yourself and your day- I hope the sds check is worth it
Bc you must be getting paid to be so obtuse to not see why people would have an issue with this
I mean just look at this thread- it’s 80+ comments and the majority are overwhelmingly in agreement with me
But I guess you’re the outlier- peace

That is not the point. He, like many others, thinks that if you grind many hours for a card, or even spend stubs on one, then those cards that you earned should not expire. This is not about grinding or getting free cards. This is about having a card that you earned, being deemed basically useless.

They don't really "expire" and you don't have to "burn" them like in the analogy you used. You just can't use them in modes where Set 1 cards are not eligible. You can still use them in other modes where Set 1 cards are eligible, or you can use one as your wild card in any mode.
Dude I don’t play anything but online modes lol
Which majority of people do in this game
I absolutely hate playing against the computer- I play one game of mini seasons on HOF to get warmed up and then it’s online play for me(mostly co-op ranked and regular ranked
i hope set 3 has some bangers because Set two has been overall very disappointing when it comes to batters.

None of us actually have any proof how the majority of players actually play the game (offline only, Online Only, combination, etc)
I would not be surprised to find that even if the majority do play online only that it is not by a huge margin.

Lol- I think if they gave you the option to pick 3 or 4 wildcards then it this wouldn’t be such an issue
Because you would still have to grind for the newer cards that are realized but you’d also get to carry over 3 cards that you absolutely love
Just imagine a person has played the game enough to get chipper, babe and Pedro. They literally can only use one of those cards going forward- that’s bizarre especially how heavy the grind was to obtain those set one collection cards

I get everyone’s frustration but I said this before and I’ll say it again- this game is being treated as 6 mini cycles. Instead of one long slow grind- we get 6 quickies (TWSS). If they waited to tell us these cards wouldn’t be useable until it was too late, that would be absurd. But it’s been written for months. Any of you spending money/stubs certainly didn’t have to if you thought it was unfair. there are so many solid cards that are free. I haven’t spent a dime other than the $100 to buy the game and I have a tons of solid 99s that are end game. Yes, I flip. They gave me that option and I took it.
Do I like this model? yes and no. I wish we had a happy medium. Maybe no sets and seasons and dozens of end game 99s from day 1. But I definitely got tired of grinding for cards that were trumped by better cards the min you got them. I’ll use guys like Chipper all year.
“But you can’t, they expire!” not for me, I’d rather get a root canal than only play online. Offline is how I enjoy my games or a league with friends. I love when someone says the majority of players play online. How do you know? Most of the people I know either prefer offline or like both.
Anyway, I’d also like to point out that sets 4-6 are probably really short time periods or with be overloaded with insane cards like the end game always is.
6 mini cycles where their goal is to get you to spend as many stubs as they can get from you.
And they do expire for you. I also play offline only. If you want to do any Season 3 or beyond conquest maps or mini seasons then those cards will essentially be expired for that content. You would be relegated to re-running Season 1 and 2 conquest maps or the US map.
All I know is that when July 7th comes around, if my Cardinal Theme team is gutted because I am using so many good Set 1 cards (Walker, Edmonds, Smith, WBC Arenado and Goldschmidt and Nootbaar, Charisma Edman, Captain Wainwright, Gibson, Lee Smith), many of whom will have multiple Parallel levels, then I am more than likely done at that point.
I get what you’re saying. But honestly there are so many more cards this year than years previous. So if your goal is to collect every card (which is usually my goal), then yeah you’ll be spending stubs. If you just want a solid team, there will be plenty of options. Personally, I use program pxp guys for mini seasons and conquest and otherwise I just play straight up against cpu. I’m sure that’s boring for most, but I still enjoy it.
Also, I’d point out that TA Mini Seasons you already can’t use a bunch of the cards. No Charisma, no WBC, no specialty like Finest, Award, etc. it’s basically intended to use the cards from Captain, LS and whatever that TA is. Standard MS you can you any cards all year.

It's not. I have no delusions of collecting every card. I don't play enough for that to even be an option. I just want the best Cardinals team that I can put together.
As I said, I like to use my Cardinals theme team. It is something I do every year. It is what I enjoy doing. So, while I know I will have plenty of cards to replace expiring Cardinal Set 1 players with, the question is will I have enough new Cardinal cards to replace the old ones. That will be the question I ask myself on July 7th. If the answer is "No" or even if the answer is "Yes, but it will cost you hundreds of thousands of stubs." then I will most likely stop any semblance of regular play.

That makes sense of course. Honestly, I agree with a lot of people, I think this was a good idea in theory but as it plays out, it may end up turning a lot of people off. I for one of course hope it works out because I not only want to enjoy the game, but I like when the community is into it as well. Not like I want to evangelize and make everyone like it, there are aspects that drive me insane. I hope they have a plan and they don’t have to pivot on July 7th because a ton of people drop off.

I do have a feeling that the weekend of July 7h will be an interesting one on this forum and on Reddit. I think for some players that it won't dawn on them until it happens.
There are 69 cards that are set 1 with a 99 overall rating that will cease to be useful online.
Right now my cardinals Theme team is
97 Edman (Set 1)
99 Walker (Set 1)
99 Edmonds (Set 1)
92 McGwire (set 2 captain)
92 Nolan Gorman (set 2)
95 Arenado (set 1)
90 NootBaar (set 1)
95 Goldschmidt (set 1)
94 Contreras (set 2)Bench
90 Tyler O'Neill (set 1)
95 Matt Carpenter (set 1)
99 Ozzie Smith (set 1)So between now and July 7th I will need to come up with 6 starters and 3 bench bats to stop my theme team from getting decimated. I guess we will see how it goes. Oh, and two starting pitchers, including what may be my first P5 ever, Captain Adam Wainwright.

The content is only gonna get better so I wouldn’t sweat it.
The issue isn’t if the content will be great or not
The issue is being FORCED to have cards your grinded for be absolutely irrelevant in a month or so
Just picture if you grinded season one for chipper, babe and Pedro
You can literally only use one of them next month and that’s only if you decide to make one of them your wildcard over your other cards at that
That’s wayyyyyyy too much grinding to have the cards you grinded for be irrelevant
And I don’t think you’re going to get much better than chipper or babe- maybe equal but not better… if anything might be slightly better
Chipper and Babe are pretty much maxed out lol
Babe is 100% maxed out.
Agreed, I don't get the 'better content' argument. Will they be releasing 100s now? They shot their load too early on the best players having 99s like Griff, Chipp, Babe, Maddux, Pedro. Or will they just release alternate 99 versions of the same players??? That would be weak
They already have what, two Kelly Jansen (Red Sox Closer) - the "core" one and a milestone (400 saves) one?
They've been re-releasing the same players in multiple "formats" for years now - that "weakness" is another long-sailed ship...
I've already got a "captain" David Ortiz, and I fully expect to see his "game cover" card sometime this year along with at least one or two other versions...

Then not being able to use said card and then having to do that grind or spend money all over again for pretty much the same exact card all over again lol
It doesn’t even make sense when I say it out loud
No they said the trial and error thing to see how it worked out was about captains, not sets
Ok I’m able to say when I was mistaken which I was about the trial and error.. I believe
But I do remember them being pretty ambiguous about what further seasons/sets would consist of
So if I’m never able to use these set one cards again what’s the purpose of keeping them? What was the purpose of grinding for them and building their stats
Are they just going to make my Griffey and trout from season one obsolete and then turn around and gives us another griffey and trout that I need to pay/grind for again
These are my questions/gripes with this whole thing
Maybe wait until set/season 3 to see how it works?
Ok I took the bait and unblocked you becaue you’re so active in this thread so I’ll answer you question
They’ve already told us how season 3 works- which is the whole Lonny if my thread
You won’t be able to use cards that you grinded for and/or paid for from season one- and that’s my whole complaint
You’ll be able to use all of your cards, just not in every mode.
Not sure what “Lonny if my thread” means but, you do you I guess.
Point of my thread*
And not being able to use them in n ranked seasons, as I stated on the first page, is the reason this expiring card fiasco is ridiculous.
You said it’s because you spent money on them. Or “grinded” for them.
What you could do, is not spend money on cards that you won’t be able to use in your preferred modes of gameplay.
And for the free cards you got from “grinding” have the mindset that you actually got them from playing the game you enjoy playing.
You do enjoy playing the game yes? If not, then why are you playing it.
Again this makes no sense- there was no way to grind for certain cards- you either had to buy them out right or buy a pack and hope you got lucky. Either way it takes money
I’m not worried about spending money- I’m frustrated that you’re not going to be able to use the cards, I’ve spent my time/money to gain, which means I own them, any time I want.
I don’t understand why that’s so difficult for you to understand- and I’m saying that sincerely, not trying to be rude or anything
I don’t understand how it’s so difficult for you to grasp that people that have spent time and or money on anything in life would like to be able to use the fruits of their labors when they like to and not be told when they can do so- especially in something that’s supposed to be a fun children’s game- IE a video game
Perspective...
To rehash:
Last year, I "paid" for a Manga Randy Johnson on day 1. (from one of the packs that came with deluxe) Because he was a 90 OVR, he was "weak" by mid-may, and "functionally useless" by mid-june, because I was expected to field a full team of then-"new" 94 and maybe 95 OVR cards...
Which was SDS's "plan" - "force" people to churn their team multiple times in a year via the steady increase of OVR, and the "early" cards were either handicaps or "worthless" by mid-season, and the mid-season cards were in that boat by year's end...
And I know this because I used my team slots to "compare" the teams I "picked up" throughout the season - first slot is my original team, second slot is my "month and a half in" team, and my final team is completely different (ie, uses no cards) than the original. This year, my Charisma Set 1 Bob Gibson is a 99 OVR. He will remain "full power" for the entire year.
Granted, in "mid june" he won't be "free to slot on my team" in most (especially competitive) modes, however, I could place him in the wild-card slot with a full crew of set 2 or 3 cards.
And if I like my set 1 99 Ricky Henderson that I "ground for" more, I could put him in the wild card slot - but that would preclude me from having set 1 Gibson as well...
And then there will be tournaments in which I can build myself a team of the best cards I own "set-free", so I can pair multiple set 1s with set 3s...Yes, they are blatantly "forcing" you to churn your roster X times this year - via the set mechanic - yet how different is is than last year's?
And remember, it's not going to be "drop all of set X because set Y came out" - there's gonna be "overlap" - right now we have access to all our set 1s while assembling a full team of set 2s, and when 3 drops in mid-june, we will still have all our 2s, and a "select" 1 to mess with while assembling the set 3s...

@aware_ward13_PSN said in Expiring Cards is absolutely ridiculous:
It’s not like you didn’t know this until now. Maybe you should’ve thought about this before sinking money into these cards. Btw once the seasons portion of this game has ended (no new content period) my guess is everything will be usable again.
