Playoffs Opinion After One Round

I haven't watched a lot of baseball on TV for at least 5 years-- scheduling, work, and life basically.
But the games I watched (both Phillies games, the 15 inning Indians game, some of Seattle and the Muts/Padres), have been some of the most dreadfully boring baseball games I've ever seen.
Not to say there wasn't a lot of drama. The Phillies 9th was exciting, but I was dozing off the entire game. Obviously Seattle's comeback was cool.
The Indians game set baseball back about 25 years.
There were 39 strikeouts in that game, out of a total of 90 outs.Am I the only one who thinks strikeout/home run baseball is boring?
Will the shift rule generate more hits?In the 2 Phillies wins, I bet there weren't 10 hard hit balls between both teams-- lazy fly balls, softly hit ground balls.
Kyle Schwarber hit .216 for the year.
.216??!! Ya, 46 homers is great and all, but .216? -

I thought the Seattle vs Toronto games were exciting but then, I’m biased.
I think the analytics and constant offspeed and breaking pitches in what used to be hitter counts is changing the way the game gets played.
Huge erratic strike zones from umps just enable struggling pitchers too.
Sigh.

I thought this past weekend was great and wild card weekend was a success. Baseball is just going to be lost on some people. Sports are in an age where sloppy play is more exciting than a 15 inning 1-0 game. I am in the minority probably in the opinion that to grow the game, the MLB is going to need to stick to the international tiebreaker even in the playoffs to get the game wrapped up.

I suggest going to see a playoff game in person. Generally the crowd is into every pitch. Knowing that one mistake could be the difference in the ball game. The strategy in game is so much more involved

All 5 out of the top 5 payrolls made the playoffs
7 out of the top 10 payrolls.
9 out of the top 12 payrolls.That is probably why I will root for Seattle (#21) or Cleveland (#28). If my team is out of the picture then I have a tendency to root for the underdogs.

I do agree that the game has moved in a bad direction with analytics governing strategy. However. It's still a beautiful game and I definitely enjoyed all but the Cards series for bias reasons. Congrats to the Phillies though.

I suppose, but don’t Seattle (21), Cleveland (28), and TB (#25) kind of disprove that argument? One quarter of the playoff teams were in the bottom nine teams in terms of payroll. That’s more than just one outlier. Especially considering Cleveland is very very close to the basement and they’re advancing to the ALDS. And the Mets (#1) got beat in the first round. Also, Philadelphia (4) and SD (5) only managed a wild card berth. Boston (6), Chicago (7) and the angels (10) didn’t even make it that far. I’m not a statistics expert but it doesn’t feel like a strong enough correlation to say “money automatically = success,” or that “lack of money = failure.”
Money has always been a factor, at least to some degree, in making it to the playoffs. It doesn’t necessarily feel like this year is much different than every other year.

I didn't say that money guaranteed success in the playoffs (see Mets).
And yeah, this is nothing new or earth shattering. I just have a long lasting bias against those teams that spend so much more than everyone else. It may not be a fair bias for me to still have as it is no longer simply one or two teams doing it.
And it is why I will root for Cleveland and/or Seattle. I don't really have an affinity to either team. I just would love to see them take out those high salary teams.

The extreme shift that teams do nowadays does make for boring baseball, which is why they voted to limit it next season. Going forward, teams will need to place more of a premium on athleticism at the middle infield positions, which is a win for baseball.
MLB failed by not reseeding after round 1.

The Owner of those teams just do not want to spend money to put the product on the field. That was part of the lock out.

Dont know that its a failure. not reseeding give us dodgers vs padres phils vs braves and seattle vs houston and sets up a potential rematch/revenge series in the nlcs in braves/dodgers or phils/dodgers if the padres dont upset.
reseeding the AL matchups would still be the same but dodgers padres and braves phils is definitely better than dodger phils and braves padres. -

That is total payroll for 2022. The top 5 do not change positions if limited to just the 26 man
If you just look at the 26 man roster then the numbers do change as the BlueJays and Cardinals then become top 10 teams. Using that metric 9 out of the top 10 teams made the playoffs (the lone exception was the White Sox)
Both Seattle and Cleveland also climb higher if you just consider the 26 man roster

8 relievers all throwing gas is too much
If the rosters were back to 25
AND the max rp in the pen was 6Things might turn different as now many rp would have to be up on consecutive nights.
So as it is now there are 4 goose gossages coming at you from the 6th inning on.
Bad for offense.
I mean really??? How is banning the shift gonna get more balls in play?? -

I think now that we are into longer series, that will change. Not everyone will be as effective on second consecutive (or third) days.
