I have a soft spot for that one because I was an extra in several scenes, although I can only spot myself in one.

Yeah, really. The scene where Paul O'Neill hits a ball to the wall and the player crashes against the wall to make the catch. When McGrevey comes back into the dugout I am in the crowd behind the dugout.
This by the way was filmed in Comiskey at the beginning of November. I am literally the only person who paid attention to the instructions and pretended that the game was being played in summer. I am the only one in a white short sleeved t-shirt. If you watch the scene the crowd is shown very briefly but almost all of them are in long sleeves (or wearing jackets) and dark colors. There were actually snow flurries the day it was filmed.
I also watched the fielder run into the wall over and over, doing multiple takes of the catch. Someone was just lobbing the ball to the wall. It may have even been a fake wall but I can't remember for sure. That was a long time ago.

It was fun but it was a very long day as the drive just to get to the ballpark was like 3 hours for me. I was chosen for almost every scene they filmed that day although you can only see me in the one. One scene we were in the CF bleachers with a bunch of cardboard cutouts wearing t-shirts (strangely familiar this year). Next we were then on the 3B line and then behind the 1B dugout. Since I had a car I even was allowed to park it in a scene where the team bus pulls out away from the park.
I think I left home at 3 or 4 in the morning to get to the stadium in time and the final shot was after dark so it was probably a 10-12 hour day at the stadium and 6 or 7 hours of me driving. I think I was paid like $75, which included a bonus allowing them to use my car (which you can't even see).
woah man this is something else...also thats a ripoff not gonna lie. $75 for the whole day? that's not even minimum wage
Well, it was something like 25 years ago so, discounting my driving time, it actually was above minimum wage, which was only like $4.25 at the time.
Now that I think about it, that would be true. Even if it was under minimum wage, I would eat at Mcdonalds for a day or so if I got to be in a movie!

Fact, I was older than all the kids when that movie came out, if i was a few years younger, i may have liked it more.

Age will make a difference to current perception. When The Natural came out, I was in college playing ball in So Cal, and it seemed kinda corny to me. As time has gone on, the nostalgia side of me really loves it now.
The Sandlot was fun but not even in the same league as many others IMHO. But then I was in my 30s when it came out. But I could still relate to neighborhood youth ball very well. Just felt the writing and direction not up to par. The Bad News Bears was a similar movie but better casting, writing, and direction.
But its all good. Anything that you enjoy and brings back fond memories is a great thing.
Totally agree with you. Was joking about downvotes. The Natural was actually my first love before the Sandlot came along. I even made my own Wonderboy bat as a boy.

The Natural. Saw it in the theater when it first came out, and it's still my favorite after all this time. A distant 2nd would be Major League. More recently I really liked 42. It was good but not great.

My favorite is either major league or field of dreams, depending on whether I wanna laugh or I'm feeling sentimental lol. Unpopular opinion: Bull Durham is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, baseball or otherwise. I don't get how it always winds up on best of lists.

Well if you played minor league ball, it might hit home a little bit more. I was playing in the Carolina League the year it came out in 1988. Played many times at that exact ballpark. They had filmed summer scenes the winter before. Notice the cold air fog when guys would breathe. I believe it was released in May 1988 and the stands were packed once the movie came out. It was like a carnival there. Lots of fun. I loved the scene when the guys needed a night off so they flooded the field the night before. When I watch Bull Durham now, its like a time capsule back to 1988.

For them. Never stayed overnight in Durham. Just a day trip from WS. Cool to see the exact unis in the movie.
