Betts.
WAR - 2.6 (1st)
AVG - .355
HR - 12 (T-1st)
RBI - 27
RUNS - 31 (1st)
K% - 14.5%He bats leadoff, so his low K% is important, and to have 27 RBIs for that spot is excellent. He has played gold glove level defense including several assists. No "love from SDS" is needed, he has earned it. His 95 card [should] have nothing to do with this.
His 95 card has everything to do with it though
So the POTM award is basically a "participation trophy" for those who do not have great cards yet...and which the best performer is not allowed to get [another] award. SMH
Them not wanting to release what would essentially be another 95 overall card for him is a better reason than those saying Goldschmidt won't get it because last month's lightning card was a 1B and they won't release two in a row.
Might as well give it to goldy. This game has lacked anything worthy of getting excited about, why start now?

Is he not deserving? Who would you give it to, assuming it will be a 94 or 95 overall?

I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve it, he has had the best month. Im saying that it would be another boring program for another firstbaseman. That being said I don't see how he doesn't get it. It will either be him or a pitcher.
-
Sounds like perfect Month for a pitcher. Devers would be fun though
-
It's obviously Nick Plummer.

Story or Trea Turner? Both have had good months even if not as good as your guys you listed in op.
I don't know how people keep putting Story's name out there. He is batting .227 for the month of May. Goldschmidt has 2 more HRs and the same number of RBIs and is batting .406
Turner is a possibility to get a card because of the streak but I don't think he has done enough to be lightning.
I don't think he is deserving but neither was Rizzo last month. SDS has set the bar pretty low. Basically if you hit a bunch of HR or get tons of RBIs you can win, batting average does not matter to them. Meanwhile a middle infielder would be much more popular than another slow firstbaseman. Goldy is most deserving but that does not mean SDS will take the obvious choice.
-
Could be a Pitcher -- Martin Perez would be prime nominee with his 4-0 record, 1 CG SO and 33K. Only gave up 3 ER all month (ERA 0.64).
Otherwise I think Devers is a solid nominee for AL position player - .381 / .712 / 1.133. He had 22 XBH (8HR) and 17RBI in 28 games.

POTM will likely be mookie or goldy/Devers or Judge. Judge and mookie are out for the lightning and devers already has a FOTF. Would they seriously drop another firstbaseman? Pitchers of the month is likely wheeler and perez so maybe wheeler? Only other batter that could be a possibility is Altuve. What do you guys think?
Mookie is a possibility, he’s been hot in May. Verlander has amazing stats so far this season, so if they give us a pitcher, it’ll be him.

I venture to say that no program or choice is going to please everyone and someone will always say that the program is boring.
Hell, I ain't even got Rizzo yet. I did not like the stage 2 and stage 3 portions of the POTM program at all. It's way too drawn out. They trickle out the lower cards slowly and pretty much make you get them to Parallel 1 before they give you the next one and ask you to do it all again.
Possibly the only thing that would get me excited about the May POTM program would be a Goldschmidt card.

The POTM card for this month will most likely be around a 95. Betts already has a 95 card.
The only reason Rizzo got the card last month is that most of the other contenders already had diamond cards in the low 90s.

Verlander was in line to be in the running but his last start dropped him way down in fWAR for the month so he wont even get consideration for AL Pitcher of the month

Verlander ruined (or at least should have ruined) his chances with his last start. Statistically there are at least 10 other pitchers with better months of May than Verlander.

Martin Perez or Hader will probably get it to mix things up.
Goldschmidt hands down if it is a hitter and it's not close. Betts only has a higher WAR due to the positional adjustment.

I'm not saying that Betts doesn't deserve it, but giving Mookie a 95 POTM card when he already has a 95 card is dumber than Rizzo getting April's card. Betts being the "best" performer over goldy is quite debatable too.
I'll always remember 2 years ago when Jose Ramirez got a 99 potm after they had released his former finest card in the prestige reward path

Not sure where you are getting your information, but both players were very close in basically every hitting category during May. Furthermore, Betts lead Goldy in not just WAR, but also in Home Runs, Runs, and K%. If defense matters, then Betts lead in that aspect too.

I mean I didn't like that either but at least there was a sizeable gap in when those 2 were released. 95 mookie came out like 2 weeks ago
-
They have done some stupid card choices before. Ramirez already mentioned, but they also had 2x 99 versions of Vlad and Harper last year.

I'm getting my information from statistical facts.
Goldy leads Betts sizeable, not close, in AVG, OBP, SLG, and thus OPS... we are talking +62, +60, +71, +131... he slaughters him outright. Sure, Betts hit 2 more HR but Goldy topped him in XBH and TB... +6 more RBI. Betts got driven in more by his team mates and scored more Runs.
Goldschmidt had a 251 wRC+ for the month, Betts was 3rd behind Goldy and Devers at 216... it's not close. Another sizeable win for Goldy.
Betts has a better WAR due purely to positional adjustment and that's it.

Martin Perez.
