I believe Ben Davis or maybe Eric Byrnes who bunted in the 9th to break up a no-no a long time ago. That started a nice debate on tv. You're a coward who's afraid to swing the bat if you bunt in the 9th while someone is throwing a no-no.
Yup, I remember watching this game on TV as a Padre fan. It was Ben Davis for the Pads who bunted for a hit against Schilling if i remember correctly who was with the Diamondbacks. It was 1-0 late in the game and the Padres were down. Davis lakes down the bunt trying to put the tying run on base. I don't see a problem with it as was said, you're trying to win a game and that comes first. At the time Bob Brenly the Diamondbacks manager had a huge problem with it, as did Schilling. If a pitcher is that dominant though and you're running out of innings to try and score you have to do whatever it takes in my opinion, no hitter or not.

If I have 3 HR, and going for history by hitting a 4th, is the pitcher then required to groove me a fastball instead of doing his best to strike me out or get me to ground out or pop up? The score is irrelevant here.
If no, why?
Pitchers can’t have it both ways.
Only “unwritten” I would ever follow would be not to show up your opponent. You are leading by 6 in the bottom of the 8th, you don’t steal, hit and run, etc.
Everything else, I think, is fair game.

I saw it was 2-0 in the 8th. Guess nobody expected the catcher to bunt.

The bunt one doesn’t make sense if it’s a close game. If Juan Pierre is the tying run in the 8th, I say lay one down if that’s your chance. If it’s a 5 run game, I think that’s pretty bad.

I don’t think bunting in this game is a questionable tactic. There are ways to counter it.

I think it depends on context. If you are squeezing runners in with power hitters, it kinda says, “I’m not sure I can hit the hall out of the infield”.

Unwritten rules are killing this game. Tim Andersen celebrates and all of a sudden he’s considered a cancer to the sport by many broadcasters and players

If you bunt to break up a no hitter you’re slime, I agree, unless it’s a scoreless game, a play off game, or there’s a runner on third and it’s a suicide squeeze to tie the game.
The most recent bush league thing of this sort I can remember was José Tabata leaning into a front door slider to end scherzer perfect game. That kind of thing is gutless. A breaking pitch and he just sticks out his elbow guard.

Drag bunts just make me feel dirty. It’s probably because of all the bad animations etc. It’s practically cheese.
