Is Derek Jeter The Most Overrated Player Ever?
-
His defense wasn't great, but that doesn't make him overrated overall. What a silly argument.
All the guy ever did was get hits and he came up clutch more times than not on the biggest stage in the biggest market. Did it all with class as well which resulted in him getting a STANDING OVATION at FENWAY PARK after his final at-bat.

I dont understand takes like this. Jeter is a top 10 shortstop of all time, and that's just a given. Never once in my life heard that he is "the best of all time"....but he absolutely is top 10 and you can argue top 5 pretty easily. Add in the fact he was the face of a dynasty in the biggest market in the world adds to it, and he was about as professional as they came.
Not sure how he can be "overrated"
So you would put Jeter in top 5???? Banks, Wagner, Larkin, Yount, Ripken... all better than Jeter outside of rings, but Jeter was on stacked teams every single year. If Jeter played for the Orioles... we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

If you wanna say his defense is overrated I can definitely get behind that but as an overall player? No. I don't think you can call anyone with a career .310 batting average overrated.
There's a lot of shortstops that had a career avg. of .300+ though. Nobody is saying he was not top 50, but definitely not top 5. His defense was average at best and wasn't a great hitter, just a good hitter. Nomar had better offensive numbers and was a lot better defensively, but nobody is saying he was great.
Amazing how you can confidently say the person with the 6th most hits of all time wasnt a "great" hitter. And lets forget about his ability to score runs and all of the extra base hits too. Not expecting much from a Sox fan though.
Also, Nomar had 7 productive seasons at the plate and eclipsed 200 hits ONCE in his career. He had some solid years but his numbers are far less impressive than people think.

I said he has an argument. You can't base every single thing off of numbers, but I am absolutely putting him ahead of Barry Larkin and Robin Yount. That's a joke

I was curious about your first statement so just did some research on that. There are 212 overall players that have a qualifying career batting average of .300 or better. 17 of those played shortstop, but that's including players like Rogers Hornsby or Harvey Kuenn that played SS for 5 seasons or less. Of those 17, only 3 played after 1966 (Jeter, Garciaparra, Trae Turner). 12 of them had careers ending before 1950.
Jeter is 116th all time in career batting average, and 10th or so among shortstops, depending on how many games/seasons at SS you want to use as a baseline for inclusion into the discussion.

Throughout his career all I ever heard was "if he didn't play for the Yankees, he'd not be as big of a name". His hitting stats look great, but he did play in the roid era, so at that time, It didn't look as good he really was. I think his fielding will always hold him back in the discussion of best SS ever. Until Jeter and the more modern game, most teams would rather have an Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel at the position, now fielding isn't looked at as much as long as you can get on base more than how many runs you allow on defense.
So I think like someone said The Bryce Harper thing, he was called overrated so much that he's becoming underrated.
Ultimately it comes down to what you want to use to define him. If you are going to walk around saying Jeter was the greatest SS to play the game, then yeah you are overrating him. But a guy who is probably top 10 at his position, no not overrated.
-
Most people figure out he was very good, not an all time great if they look into his numbers.
I would say overhyped more than overrated.

The numbers are exactly what make him an all time great...you have it backwards my man.

Depends what you consider an all time great. All time great hitting SS. Top 10 for sure. Overall player? His defense hurts him a lot for me, especially playing a premier defensive spot.
-
He was a great leader, winner, and hitter. Horrific defense, though. That said, he is vastly overrated due to playing in the Bronx. Not a top 10 shortstop. Top 20, sure.
-
As a Red Sox fan, no he wasn’t. I have much respect for Jeter. Is he the greatest of all time? No. Hall of Famer? Without a doubt. That’s the truth, nice attempt at a troll job though.
-
Will always be a dumb take. But, people will always continue to make it for attention.

Really disappointed in the author of that video leaving out one crucial detail that impacted his performance:
Detective Terry Hoitz shot him!!! IN THE LEG!!! GAME 7!!!
I pulled a muscle stretching the other day and I missed a week of work….my typing speed has significantly diminished….and yet we expected him to return and still perform?!?! Shameful animals!!

33 players have ever got 3000+ hits, he’s one of them. Not overrated.

Watch the video and if you can still call him top I will be shocked. Just because he is popular doesn't mean he is great
I watched him his whole career - he's great no doubt they don't make good players The Captain of the Yankee's.

Yeah, a guy who has 3000 career hits is the most “overrated” baseball player ever just like the OP is the most unintelligent individual in the history of the world. You see what did there?!?! Lol at morons who use absolutes as a way to justify their argument. You deserve to be mocked and ridiculed for this kind of nonsense. Now if you really want to talk about overrated players go research Brien Taylor. Have a good day kid

Relax Karen. Just because he is grossly overrated that doesn't make him a bad player. No way should he be a first ballot hall of famer but in DD terms I could see him getting an 86 as his top card.

I’d say my cap closer is the most overrated player ever.
