Othani is the obvious choice among current players. Of course there is a lot of factors in play here. Remember that Trout has never graced the cover and has deserved it.
I don't know when they have to make the call on the cover athlete. But if it was in the last month they could have very easily gone with a legend since the status of the actual season is in doubt.
Fans have been wanting Jeter on the cover for a while now so that is always an option.

How do you think a Jeter card would actually translate to the show? High contact, low 80s power, silver, maybe gold defense when paralleled, and 70s speed with no secondary positions. Good card but he won't be the best shortstop for very long. He'd have to be released before any of the other good shortstops to be a starter.
They will make him super jacked just like they did with Tatis, reality be damned. Tatis as a diamond fielder? Get outta here.

I'd love to get a Joe D card but yes, the speculation is over Jeter. Would be nice to see him added.

There has never been a pitcher on the cover of MLB the Show I don't see that trend ending this year the 22 logo to be able to play off that with Jeter all signs seems to be doing that way

Not US release, but international (Canada) release saw Stroman on '18 cover and International (Korea) release of '06 with Park and the international (Taiwan) releases of each year '13-'17 with Chen.
Also, there is a first time for everything, and deGrom being the first and being announced in NYC would make sense.
Another thing, SDS likes to throw us curveballs with the hints of different types of releases!

Hello! I hope you're all doing well! I haven't been on this board in months, but I'm happy with the news of a 2022 MLB The Show. I've been playing RTTS on MLBTS 2020 this year.
For the new cover, I think a legend player could be a good idea given what's going on in baseball right now.

How could you forget the Mets existed? We created the rally cap, the 'K' sign thing, with Doc Gooden, the curtain call, the wave and maybe others.
