I see people complaining on this thread almost every time there's a content release. So it leads me to believe that people overall aren't having as much fun playing this game as they had hoped to.
Therein lies your logical fallacy. The message boards are not real life.
SDS has the behind the scenes metrics to see whether or not people are "having as much fun as they hoped to." If those numbers are where SDS expects them to be, it will continue. If they aren't, SDS will adjust as they see fit.
The tenor and volume of message board posts will not factor in one iota into the decision.
They undoubtedly mine and assimilate very deep and thorough data of online players.
Their tendencies. Their dislikes (triggered by quits sometimes I would suspect). Burn-out points. When do they quit playing online. Is it 2 weeks into the game or 2 months. All sorts of patterns, flags, and tendencies that are stored as statistical data and eventually transformed into meaningful and useful context.
It's actually where the rubber meets the road for future decisions and changes relative to online play. Just a theory, but a fairly experienced theory.
