How can we get our guys back SDS????
-
Fully aware of the process in getting likeness/rights....but I think a major thorn in this games side is it's lack of consistency with legends or simply a lack of certain legends. Off the top of my head, guys who ABSOLUTELY need to be in this game
Cobb
Hornsby
Foxx
Frank Robinson
Pete Rose
Tris Speaker
Ichiro
Dimaggio
Reggie
Ernie Banks
Mel Ott
Nelly Cruz
Yaz
Kingman
Rivera
Tommy John
Red RooferList goes on with all the other studs in our games past. How can we get these names SDS cmon
-
I agree 100 percent. That’s why I get this game- for the early legends. And how about a storylines-type program for some of these guys? Gil Hodges, Ted Williams have great, legendary stories. That would truly elevate the game, in my opinion.
-
I would rather focus on quality than quantity. SDS always seems to add 3 or 4 guys each year who really don’t add anything to the game. I don’t mean to pick on this dude, but a guy like Rich Aurilia is just a big dud in terms of MLBTS. He was a fine ballplayer, but he doesn’t fit alongside Hall of Famers and superstars. Rather than add 3 or 4 players of that quality, just put that money toward one of the big dogs.
It seems like SDS has given up on the dead ball era players, which is such a bummer. In the last few years, we’ve lost Cobb, Hornsby, lefty grove, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Jimmie Foxx (not exactly a dead ball era guy, but close), and probably more who I’m forgetting. Baseball is a game that values its history and tradition. SDS actually plays a pretty big part in keeping that tradition alive for the younger generations. I think they’re really dropping the ball in a way. Kind of a bummer!
But I do applaud the effort they’re put into acquiring the Negro Leagues players — that’s been awesome. Now whether they’ve really done much with those players might be a different story… but I am very thankful to see them added to the roster of legends.

I am all for more legends but what is the point when they just let the current players outclass them in almost every way?
85 Duke Snider
87 Bruce Sutter
90 Jim Palmer
90 Ralph Kiner
92 Bob Feller
92 Robin Roberts
93 Al Kaline
95 Billy Williams
96 Billy Williams
97 Tony Oliva
98 Warren SpahnThese are the Hall of Famers that do not have a 99 card.
Meanwhile Kyle Schwarber, Nck Kurtz, and Vlad Jr have 5 cards each that are equal or better than the best card for Duke Snider. Hell, Even Jazz Chisholm Jr has 4 cards better.
Then they screw with other players claims to fame simply to try and make them have more appeal. I don't mind Ozzie Smith getting a Moonshot card. I do mind that neither Ozzie Smith card in the game has Diamond Fielding. Some of this is an issue with SDS not being able to make contact hitters viable. What other excuse is there for nobody to use Tony Gwynn? Ty Cobb and Ichiro are the same type of player. Max contact, power similar to Gwynn and speed. They would end up only being used by the hardcore fans of those players.
I don't know what the answer is and I have been the biggest booster for Legends getting their due, but when people are happy with 6 cards for Nick Kurtz and others while Duke Snider gets 1 sub par card I am not sure there is a remedy.

The entire SDS content team needs an overhaul. It’s gone to absolute [censored] since they hired that Ashley girl.
-
Stop using Nick Kurtz as an example. If SDS had hindsight into what an absurd rookie season he would have they wouldn't have given him the early cards.
But they certainly dropped the ball with legends this year. Not just the Sniders of the world, but the new legends as well. Where was a Royals Beltran card? Where was Reggie Sanders as anything but a Red?
A large part of the blame for this is the TA structure. And programs like "video game numbers" which should have had 10+ cards but only had 2. And something like Action Figure or a new legends themed program instead of Pipeline Past could have given some legends the middle of the year cards they needed.
And yeah, the funny thing is that everyone wants Pete Rose but...as a player he is basically Paul Molitor with less pop and worse baserunning. People don't use low power guys generally

And four [censored] Allen cards all on the Phillies. He won an MVP with the White Sox! We have scant few MVPs in Sox history. To quote the greatest philosopher of our time, “this aggression will not stand, man!”

Bottom line is SDS pushes the modern players harder because most players of this game were born in the 2000s. They simply don’t care about the older legends. I’m an older player myself and love the older legends. My son appreciates a few of the old legends but at the end of the day he prefers the younger players that he can watch on TV. So ultimately it’s a business decision on the part of SDS and us older guys just have to live with the scraps they throw us and hope for the best.
-
A. Before SDS can put them in, they have to WANT to be in. Some players/estates don't care, while some (looking at you, Theodore Samuel Williams) ask for an exorbitant fee.
B. You hold at least a couple legends in your back pocket because you want to have a big name every year. If your entire list was added for 2026, then who is going to be interested in purchasing 2027?
C. I do miss some of the older players (Cobb, Hornsby, Foxx), but SDS is after all a business and if people aren't going to use the cards, then it's hard to justify the expense.
D. So long as Rose (and Shoeless Joe. and Alomar) remain on the Permanently Ineligible list, they will not appear in MLB The Show.
E. Red Roofer?

I never said that he did not deserve the cards he got, or that he didn't need the 99 overall cards, I just used him as an example, with two other players, of how absurd it seems to me to have that many more cards all better than a Hall of Famer.
It was more of a argument to get the Hall of Famers to have better cards.

I highly doubt that is true (that most payers were born in the 2000s)
The average age of a gamer is mid 30s, and we are probably even older than that.I do think its fair to say though that almost all of us do follow the regular season. Topps Now, Spotlight, Pipeline, Draft, Milestone cards (even the ones that SaveFarris hates) all have their place. The current players are free too, so might as well use them. I do think they go way overboard with the prospect thing though. Pipeline is good, Draft is great. Topps Now gives call up cards, also fine. Pipeline Past is where it goes too far and then Neon came around with even more prospects.
And then there is the Willi Castro issue. A mediocre player should never have a random top 10 card in the game. My opinion is the top 10 cards should be reserved for legends and future hall of famers like Judge or Ohtani.
-
They also did quite a few legends dirty by putting their 99s in DQ. I like Rod Carew cards, but not playing DQ for it.
-
@TripleH-4481_PSN FWIW, I’m a younger player who decides to buy the game each year based on the legends. I did not initially plan to this year, but Hodges, Williams, and The Hebrew Hammer made it a no-brainier for me. I’ll be waiting for those announcements for 26 and hope to be pulled in again

-
@SaveFarris_PSN
They’re not banned anymore. -
Still feel like even if the average player age of MlBTS is greater than 26 it’s not by much. All things considered I think SDS is heavily incentivized to push modern players in their game more than the true legends of the game. Plus I gotta think modern players are way cheaper to implement.
99s are certainly out of control but done so to make more cards usable.

Here is the 99 OVR total for each year since 2021
2021: 193
2022: 274
2023: 494
2024: 535
2025: 477There are actually 487 this year so far but I removed the 10 Ranked 1000 cards as they are simply cosmetic duplicates.
We will get a minimum of 2 more (the last Captain Blizzard), possibly 3 if they do the pre-order deal where you get that players card for the current version. So not a huge dropoff this year.
I'd be surprised if they can put that genie back in the bottle and ever go back to the pre 2023 levels without a ton of backlash.
-
To complete the list:
2020: 150 (not counting the "Red" Diamonds)
2019: 86
2018: 22
2017: 64 -
Its not the number of 99s. Its that most of those 99s are well beyond what a 99 should be.
There should be like 20 cards in the game with a 125 contact or power stat. But now .240 hitters are given 125 contact. Its so dumb.
-
Valid point, but how about one step further, what's the point of 125 stats when it (IMHO) feels like the stats have been nerfed this year.

Where was a Royals Beltran card?
Or a "2004 Postseason Astros" card for that matter. Actually, that card might be the best card ever. Probably too "overpowered"...
