Although I’m sad to see Nimmo go, we need a second baseman. Semien is a BIG one even though he has struggled recently. Nimmo was a liability in left with a noodle arm, and Semien just won a gold glove. He also has higher upside even at 35 and I think he'll go off now that he's finally left Globe Life Field and so I think we won this trade.

He was our finest player and two weeks later is gone.
Of course every twitter pundit thinks that it is an awful deal and that they could have probably done better.

For anybody paying attention to the Cardinals and the messaging from Chaim Bloom this is not a surprise. They are trying to build back to having a sustainable pipeline of homegrown players. They are going to get who they can for whoever has value while freeing up payroll. I am not sure many players are safe. There is a lot of talk of trading Donovan with JJ Wetherholt (who is MLB's #5 prospect for the league) waiting in the wings.
As sad as it is, if the ownership is not willing to spend more on payroll then this is the path they have to take for now. Arenado will be tough to move and they will have to eat a ton of that contract as well but I know that they are trying to move him. I would not bet against Contreras going either although all of these guys have no trade clauses.
Clarke has had limited outings but so far in the Minor has a 14.2 K/9 rate and a 4.0 H/9 rate in very limited minor league action. So there is some potential there. He will be coming up along or just behind Liam Doyle.
