Yes. And anyone who's says no either devotes 5+ hours/day or spends money.

No other reason to start the year releasing 99s and 2 different collections. They are trying to make their Jeter money back.

Thank you all for the responses. I should clarify my intent. I’m clearly a Yankees fan and want all of them on my team. Not having judge doesn’t bother me as I have all year to pull him.

But Posada and Severino are packs only. I play this game constantly and don’t have anywhere near the stubs to buy them. So besides money, I’m not sure what else to do

Posada is not "pack only". You can grind the BR program and have him in a couple days.

Not to mention, grab him in a rewind pack next BR, if you took another card 🙂

Lots of reasonable responses on here which is a pleasant surprise. For the last 3 years, I’ve been blocking people with stupid opinions and perhaps it’s finally paying off!
Like many others have said, this game is WAY better than other sports games for “DD” type of stuff. Other than buying the fancy version every year, which gives you a nice head start, I never consider spending real money (it’s cool if you want to obviously). There are so many ways to earn packs and if you play the market smartly, even without flipping (which I only rarely do because it’s so boring). My team is pretty stacked and while I likely won’t be getting Chipper, I can compete with anyone from a roster perspective.

Pay to win? No. Cash Grab? There is an argument there. Not even counting the set collections as you can het 1 of the 3 big ones from free no sells, the 50k packs are pretty obviously a money grab. Those maxed out at 30k in the past

If it wasn’t p2w the answer would simply be No, like it is every year. But it’s not, the three paragraph long deflections about “well it’s not as bad as EA!!” show that.

The offline players that can’t beat a showdown on vet telling you you’ll compete online with the program cards against dozens of 99 overall SP and RP throwing nothing under 100mph with maxed out H/9 K/9s available only in packs are clueless.

And….this is all with the understanding we are yet again, for another year, ignoring the fact you can buy literally anyone for a $ amount in this game but can’t buy anyone in any EA or 2K game for any $ amount.

I don’t think the game is “pay to play”. But, I do think that SDS is trying to nudge ( not force or push) us to play online.

The game is awfully “grindy” for us offline strictly players.

I agree— there's good F2P rewards from missions but the fastest way to get XP is from online. Obviously you're going to run into a lot of hardcores, especially in events which doesn't help. Plus it seems like the best cards can only be earned from packs. There's a bit of truth to this but it's nowhere near the level of EA

Moreso than in the past for sure. If you doubt this check the # of 99s (and their quality) that are hidden behind expensive packs every Tuesday and Friday.

This is the correct answer in my opinion.

I can already see that even my modest goal of just obtaining all of the Cardinal players is going to be much more expensive.

99 Jordan Walker - Purchase off market
99 Jim Edmonds - Purchase off Market
99 Adam Wainwright - Purchase off market
99 Ozzie Smith - Purchase off Market

Prices have come down some since they were released. Even though their prices have been slowing going down they are still around 220K to get all four. I believe they are all from packs so there is no way to get them without spending on the packs themselves to try and get lucky or purchasing the cards outright.

Getting stubs simply from playing and doing offline content is really slow. You have to rely on getting some pack luck from earned packs to try and pull some diamonds.

You don’t need them to complete any aspect of the game. You are making the personal choice to purchase or not purchase them. That’s on you not the makers of the game.

People confuse wanting a card or group of cards to needing the cards. You don’t need to get any cards to compete. The game would match you up against competition according to your rating.

This is kind of true…you do gain more pxp playing online compared to offline, but you can’t complete moments, conquests, showdown, or mini seasons online. There are significantly more opportunities for completing programs offline than online.

With the rise of No Money Spent (NMS) teams I'd say it's become LESS PAY FOR PLAYERS... you just have to put more grind time in if you want to get to those players... the addition of Ranked Seasons Program and Battle Royale Program make it even easier because you can get World Series and Flawless Rewards respectively just by simply playing the mode... not to mention if you play Co-op that's another opportunity to get the RS rewards as well.

That requires a lot of grinding, flipping and maybe some pack luck.

The problem as I see it is that while you can definitely compile a competitive team without much of a stub requirement you might have more of a problem if you are targeting players you want.

I am not even talking about the big collections. In 5 weeks they have cycled through 11 diamond duo packs, each with two 99 overall diamonds and each on the market for a very limited time. That keeps those 99 players rarer and more expensive.

Diamond Duo Packs are 40K so even if you bought 1 pack of each that is 440K, more than the average player has even earned thus far. Then toss in the other limited packs like the All Star Game pack and we are well above half a million stubs needed. Probably more expensive than that to just target the players you want.

That would be fine if it was for the entire year but these are all Set 1 cards. Double the above investment for set 2 and all of it's limited 99 overall cards, triple it come set 3. It's a treadmill of stub spending that they want to keep everyone on all year, through 6 seasons.

If you don't have stubs you will find it hard to even keep up with even minimal collection goals.

I disagree... I was actually fortunate enough to pull Willie McCovey from a DD pack and then got the choice of him and Don Sutton in the Choice pack, took another McCovey since he was more expensive and sold him to buy Sutton who was a little cheaper... pack luck definitely factors in but McCovey and Sutton were going for a little more than the choice pack and Sutton was a little cheaper than the choice pack, so if you have 440k stubs you can grab the one choice pack and try your luck or you can wait on the market for the flood of incoming cards from the new pack... it doesn't take long for those players prices to drop but you have to get them while the pack is active in the store... or wait for opportunities like the Flash Sale because people will be once again racing to sell off their inventory to get as much as they can for a card before more people pull them, while others do it to maximize on the stubs with hopes of selling the card for a profit and buying the card back at a lower price.

As critical as I am of SDS, one thing I can’t say is the game is a cash grab. They make very good cards readily available with minimal effort.

what a ridiculous take - i have an incredible team - i hardly play as i have a life outside of gaming - i never spent money on stubs either - i love your armchair analysis, as if you are some financial guru understanding the subtleties of licensing fees and how to monetize a business

I also have an amazing team and haven’t spent a penny outside the purchase price. He’s an Astros fan so he probably doesn’t know much about anything.

I never said that I needed them. But I enjoy playing offline content with an all Cardinals squad so I wanted them.

I realize I could simply choose "Generate Best Squad" and do everything that I normally do but I don't enjoy that as much.

So, yes it's true you don't need to spend a cent but I still feel like SDS is being more aggressive with their card and pack releases in order to keep more players Stub poor in hopes that they will buy stubs off the store. Because, while you and I may have the self restraint to not fall for that, there are plenty of others who will.

Agreed. I tried to start this not as a bitter commentary, but as a conversation. I didn't know which way it would go. I'm happy to see the conversation

I got what you mean now. Same here with the Dodgers for me. We both happen to like teams who have some great legends thrown at us that are irresistible and impossible to get unless you play 24/7 or purchase stubs. Other sports games force you to pay or lose when playing online where this one isn’t.
