Why does Billy Beane trade away Jeremy Giambi in Moneyball?

The whole idea was that Beane is trying to fill the OBP gap after losing Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon in free agency. Giambi had a .404 OBP in 2002 and like a .390 OBP before getting traded in 2002, I understand the trade of Peña so the manager was forced to start Hattenburg, sure it fits the moneyball idea. But how does trading away OBP for Mabry who had only a .322 OBP that year make sense.
It just makes it seem like the Athletics started playing better when they didn’t commit as hard to moneyball and got rid of Jeremy or am I misinterpreting it?

I get that, but like the whole idea at the start when Beane is talking to the other guys he’s trying to prove the point of like “don’t you guys get it, confidence, personality, intangibles don’t matter” like that’s part of his thing.
It just seems like they began winning when the committed less to their moneyball game. -

I get that, but like the whole idea at the start when Beane is talking to the other guys he’s trying to prove the point of like “don’t you guys get it, confidence, personality, intangibles don’t matter” like that’s part of his thing.
It just seems like they began winning when the committed less to their moneyball game.he was only the league one more year after it, that should tell you why he got traded.

Real life reason: he just wasn't that good. The movie makes the trade seem a lot more significant then I remember it actually being.

According to how the movie explians it, his attitude towards losing was like whatever. And also Beane wanted to show & prove to Art Howe things will be done his way & not Howe's way from that moment on.

He wasn’t that good but in terms of what Beane was looking for, OBP, he was great. That’s what confuses me, like he fit the moneyball idea perfectly but the idea worked out better without him.
