He had that early diamond in 2020 and his best card didn't even get released until the last Run It Back program which came out in January I think.
His inclusion that year always puts a monkey wrench in me thinking that I understand the retired player algorithm for The Show.

Josh should still be in, since they may still do a cover athlete captain thingy. Since he was on '16, he should always be in the game in some form.

Not necessarily so. Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez were on the cover and neither have been in the cover athlete programs the 2 years I’ve played DD. If you wanna argue they’ve made the program for 2024 and won’t want to edit him out of it then I’ll agree.

Neither did Sergio Romo, who quit on 3/27.
I think Sergio Romo has a common LS card, in the free agent section. I think I used him a lot in the final Moonshot event. Maybe I'm playing the game wrong (not a "legend" card).

Likely as a free agent. Plus as a legend/flashback card

He should be in the game. What I have noticed in the last few years is that guys who announce their retirement and make it official at the end of the season, for example Pujols and Molina, will not be in the game the following year.
Guys who wait until spring to announce retirement, for example Lorenzo Cain last year, are usually still included in the next version of the game.

I do agree with what both @SaveFarris_PSN and @Dolenz_PSN said about him sitting in free agent pool. But the fact they might do a cover athlete program I’ll stick with my assessment for the reason I said above.
