Let's take a break from Extreme for some POTM speculation.

I vote deGrom. I think there'd be a full-blown meltdown if it was another 1B or 3B, even if they're deserving.
-
Pujols or we riot!
-
I think we should be pretty close to seeing Judge as POTM. He was the MLB's AL POTM for May and July, and we haven't seen a Monthly Awards card for him yet this year. I don't think it will be Pujols; they are probably saving him for either a collection or something else. Either way, I think they will wait until he hits 700 to issue something.
But, to thwart all of that, they may be waiting to see if Judge breaks the HR record before releasing something.

As much as I hope he makes it to 700 it is still not likely. But you are right that SDS will probably wait until at least the end of the season just in case he does.

I think you're right. I just looked at the Cardinal's schedule and his HR history.
The Cards have 33 games left (16 home, 17 away), and 6 of them are away at the Pirates. They have 4 games against the Brewers (2 and 2), who are right on their tail for the NL Central title. Pitching will be tough against them. I don't think they'll have to worry about the Pads (sorry @DeadPhish1976 & @Ericulous1_PSN), but they will against the Dodgers, who want to stay on top in the West.
He always has next year to do it. I know the game is getting very difficult for him, physically, but with the DH rule and the way the Cards team is, they'll give him every opportunity. He does deserve to hit that milestone. He is one of the great persons out there playing professional baseball.

I don't think anyone has to worry about the Padres. They are a cursed franchise. Just look at Josh Hader. Best closer in baseball for 5 years, All Star in 2022, 5 weeks later he's being removed for Wil Myers and has a 6.52 ERA. Padres make a supposedly earth shattering move at the deadline coupled with 2 other solid moves and then boom, their poster boy gets popped for steroids. And we all know this is just par for the course in SD.
Plus, my heart belongs to the Cardinals. I hope Pujols gets there but 7 more is a tall task. He has said multiple times he's retiring no matter what he ends on but I have to think if he falls a few shy he could pull an Ichiro and come back to start the season and then retire as soon as he gets there. I know Ichiro did it for 1 day so he could play and retire in Japan, this might be a bit longer.

He has been adamant, even as recently as a few weeks ago when he went on that mini tear of home runs that this season is his final one no matter what.
It would also be kind of a bad move on his part as a ton of teams are actually giving him gifts and a special send off when he visits other stadiums for the last time.

Man, Degrom has had an insane month of August. 29 IP, 14H, 2 BB, 46 K's, 0.54 WHIP. With Madden releasing, and SDS maybe wanting to make a big splash to get players back to grind, Degrom would be a perfect 99 Lightning card.
I agree, those Ks alone make him eligible. If it wasn't for his one loss... Don't forget that 2.15 ERA. 102 MPH FB. 46:2 Strikeout to walk ratio! Wow! I'm not a Mets fan, but I sure am a deGrom fan.
Next year you might be able to be a degrom fan without being a met fan

Yankees HR record maybe, no shot at the season record though. Unless you say, non steroid era record.

Even if Goldschmidt and Arenado get a hit every at bat for the rest of the month neither will get a card. They’ve already been passed by multiple times with no player coming close to the months, or year they’ve had.
Yes they both have higher diamonds but none of them are usable online, or really offline. The actual best players of the month needs to get the cards, and not have them say they’ve already got a diamond card. -
It will be DeGrom

I'd love to see him in Anaheim, but we're too cheap.

nobody ganna use a judge card no matter how cracked his stats are

hmm... Arenado is hitting like he's at mile high again and Goldy's having a career year at the same time Pujols rediscovers his power to chase down 700? Coincidence?

No. pujols hit like this last year, and when he struggled so much at beginning he decided at AS break to give it everything he has to try and make 700 before the end.
Goldy has had a bunch of seasons like this before the trade but it's not widely known/talked about cause he played for Arizona.
Arenado couldn't hit after the trade because he was too used to Coors, seems like he adjusted to not playing at Coors finally.(too long if you were to ask cardinals fans) -

Who would be the top pitcher performances?
Edward Cabrera hasn’t given up a run all month and only allowed like 8 hits I think.

Just because the month is now over and Fangraphs looks to be updated here are the top in some of the categories..
WAR
- Arenado - 2.4
- Betts - 2.2
- Bregman - 2.0
- Machado - 1.9
- (Tie) Judge and Goldschmidt - 1.8
wRC+
- Bregman - 217
- Arenado - 214
- Nathaniel Lowe - 214
- Goldschmidt - 208
- Judge - 204
AVG
- Lowe - .389
- McNeil - .385
- Jimenez - 371
- Arenado - .364
- Bregman - .362
SLG
- Arenado - .729
- Betts - .697
- Bregman - .681
- Goldschmidt - .667
- Ohtani - .653
HRs
- Arenado - 9
- Betts - 9
- Judge - 9
- Goldschmidt - 9
- Suarez - 9
RBIs
- Arenado - 29
- Machado - 28
- Goldschmidt - 27
- Arozarena - 23
- Suarez - 23
- Swanson - 23
Goldschmidt had a very bad series against Cincy (1 for 11) and has no HR's or RBIs in the last 6 games so it was kind of shocking to see him still in so many categories. He actually still led the Offensive Runs above Average category for the month.
I think Arenado wins the Actual NL player of the Month. Probably Bregman for AL.
I have no idea what SDS will do though for the lightning. I have a feeling with so many high profile names among the leaders that they may opt for a pitcher this month.
If they pass on Arenado for the second time this season I at least hope they don't make us wait 2 months or more for a 99 for him.
-
So here is my prediction.
99 Lightning - Mookie Betts
98 henchman
Arenado
Zac Gallen
Bregman95-96? Henchman
deGrom
Nate Lowe
Julio Urias
Randy Arozarena
Felix BautistaReasoning, Mookie and Goldy are neck and neck. Goldy just got a 97 all star and there have been all infielders as POTM. And we know SDS loves Mookie.
They always select 1 pitcher and 2 batters and it could be deGrom Gallen has been better on a worse team. However a 98 deGrom might be too much to pass up for SDS, arenado and bregman are worthy here too.
The hitters in the next row speak for themselves deGrom or Gallen here as those have been the top 2 pitchers in august, and Bautista has been the best closer and you all know they always get one RP in here.
Again I have no dog in the fight just my thoughts
-
It’s got to be Arenado. We can make a team of potm 3rd basemen.
Put Devers at first, Miranda at 2nd, Bregman at SS, Arenado at 3rd, Riley in LF, Carpenter in RF, and I guess Chapman in CF

Felix BautistaIf Arenado gets a card (which unfortunately I have a sneaking suspicion he won't) and it is not the lightning in favor of Betts then it is a travesty.
Betts appeared in only 3 of the offensive categories I listed above and in all three he finished behind Arenado.
