Record wise 2001 Mariners. Heart wise 2004 Astros.(note: not the 2005 Astros that went to Ws and lost, but the 04 Astros that lost to those Cards)
I guess I have to add the 2019 Astros. 107 wins and a +280 run differential and choked to the Nats. That team, according to wRC+, had the best lineup since the 1927 Yankees.

The 2001 A's and Mariners: had it not been for the Jeter flip, that would have been an amazing ALCS. We ended up with a pretty amazing WS anyway.
2019 Astros- Cole, Verlander, Greinke and that insane offense.
2021 Dodgers and Giants - (great article above)
1995 Indians were a better team than the 1997 team but I would have loved to see them beat the Marlins
2004 Cardinals and Astros (that was an amazing series too Game 5 and 6 especially, but it got a bit overshadowed).
1985 Cardinals who actually won the WS (cough....Denkinger....cough)
1988 and 1990 Oakland A's (both should have steamrolled their opponent, but alas they did not).
1954 Indians (probably the most notorious team who should have win to not only blow it but to get swept).

Little biased here but the 11-14 tigers really should have at least had a competitive world series at some point. 11: Nelson Cruz. 12: Swept in the WS, 13: David Ortiz, 14: Brad Ausmus

Agreed, Tigers should have won 1. I also think they were the team to beat in 2006 but that huge layoff after sweeping both the ALDS and ALCS really messed with their momentum. As much as I love the Cardinals. The should have lost to the Tigers that year.

The 1954 Indians and they gave us a glimpse of the horror of playing at Polo. The Wertz ball Mays caught (the famous catch in game 1) went like 450 feet with Doby on second and at any normal park would have been a game clinching home run (and given Wertz the cycle). The Rhodes home run to win the game barely cleared the wall at the line (like 270 feet tops). Totally changed the trajectory of the series.

Biased, but the 2011 Phillies. Sad part is they can only blame themselves. Instead of going for the franchise record in wins and keeping an Atlanta team that was hemorrhaging in the playoffs, they allowed a white hot Cardinals team to make the playoffs and lost to them in five games of divisional round. Great pitched game with Cards squeaking out the only run of the game in first inning and ended with Ryan Howard tearing his Achilles on final out.

The World Series losers from the 2 previous seasons. The 52 and 53 Dodgers. The everyday starting lineup included Jackie, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee, and Gil Hodges, 5 freaking Hall of Famers in the starting lineup. The problem for the Dodgers was of course the Yankees.

Oh absolutely. The 2010 and 2011 Phillies were a juggernaut. When the Cards won that series by an eyelash and a squirrel, it felt like they'd won the World Series because the Phillies were the team to beat. I always wish the Phillies had won in 2010 on the heels of Halladay's no hitter.

The 1990 Oakland A's.
The heavily favored A's were an extremely talented group making their third straight WS, but ran into a hot Reds team. Eric Davis put everyone on notice with a no doubt home run blast in game 1, the "nasty boys" basically shut down the A's line up the last 2-3 innings of each game, and that Jose Rijo Slider was unhittable!

1994 Expos. A run down of some of the players they had. At the time the season was called the Expos had a record of 74-40 and were one of the best teams ever. The Expos were robbed.

I'm biased as an M's fan, but the 2001 Mariners have to be at the top of this list. Record wise best regular season ever and no WS to show for it.

I can certainly understand your pain as a Cubs fan in that 1984 season. As a Padre fan however, 1984 is one of my best sports memories of all time.
That 1998 team was pretty special too. Too bad they ran into the greatest team of all time in the WS. I still think if the ump doesn't blow that call against Langston, the Pads may have at least made it a 6 game series.
