My money is on Shohei being the cover athlete next year. He's definitely earned it with his big year.

Wander isn't a massive star like Ohtani yet, so I doubt it'll be him. My money is on Ohtani, but it doesn't matter because I'm not buying '22.
This is likely the last year I purchase this one if they dont make some big changes
Agreed. I'm tired of pre-determined outcomes. Fielders with low fielding and throwing power/accuracy attributes shouldn't be throwing out 99 speed runners from deep SS at first base when he's ranging to his right and almost behind 3rd base when he picks up the ball.
There's literally too many issues with this game to mention. I'm just so over it. When I play the game at 10 pm at night, on Rookie just to blow off some steam, I shouldn't have the feelings of wanting to break my controller because of how bad the game truly is. There is obviously some good, but so much bad.

Speaking of, I'm tired of instances where I could get a 9-3 putout against CPU, but the game actively prevents me from doing so by having my first baseman being far from the bag. Literally puts him away from the bag so I can't get the out. It's the game's fault, therefore, if a home run is a 2-run homer because it prevented me from getting the baserunner out at first.
Hate that. I shouldn't be prevented from making plays, period.

If it’s Ohtani it would be a sin to not name 22’s game MLB The Sho 22
-
The game shouldn't be delayed. If NBA 2K wasn't delayed years ago, neither should the show. Unless MLBPA says so because of licensing.
-
Ohtani and see you all next year!

Why does everyone think this will happen? Will it be post lockout possibly in February?
I wouldn’t think that would stop an announcement. They certainly know the cover guy. Wonder who that’ll be?
My guess — Wander Franco.
It's for sure going to be either Shohei or Vlad Jr. Almost no chance it's anyone else imo.
I could see a Acuna Soto or Lindor because I am willing to bet no one assumed Javi was gonna be cover

Acuna was injured most of the year and Lindor had a bad year. Baez was extremely popular and coming off of a good season. Soto could be a possibility, but at this point I'd be willing to put down money it'll be Ohtani. He's the face of baseball right now.

From a business standpoint Shohei would be do big numbers internationally. I mean tbh he really deserves it. The guy is a phenom.
True indeed. OK, so much for my Wander guess.

Wander deserves it too. He didn’t waste any time adjusting to the big leagues. He just turned 20 and hit a home run in his first game and batted .288 in his first season. That’s elite.

The obvious choice is Ohtani but stuff happens. They could have licensing issues with putting him on the cover (which is I assume why we never got Trout). They could have decided to go with another legend like they did with Griffey a few years back.
As for purchasing the game next year, I never commit until they release information and I see the streams. That said, I would be tempted to keep playing 21 because I don't think i will be able to build a better Cardinals squad next year. Chances are we would not see the likes of
POTM O'Neill
POTM Bader
PostSeason Edman
Postseason Gallegos
Moments Nootbaar
POTM Flashback Carpenter (I would really miss that one) -

I am always leery of giving new players too much credit based on a partial season. Maybe that is because I remember them putting Puig on the cover after only a half season of play.
That said, the cover athlete has less to do with players deserving it and more to do with marketing. Yes, the two often go hand in hand but there is little doubt that Ohtani is more marketable than Franco and not by a small amount.
If it was about deserving it then I would think you would start with the top vote getters in the MVP and CY Young races

If DeGrom didn’t get hurt I would’ve said he easily could’ve been on the cover. He was unstoppable early on.

Yeah, unless there's some issue with them not being able to use Ohtani, it's really a no-brainer for them. He checks all the boxes. AL MVP and probably the most popular/marketable player in the game, both in the U.S. and internationally.

When did they announce Tatis last year?
Seems Feb 1
-
If Acuna hadn’t got injured, and kept them pace he was on, AND the Braves still won the WS…. I would say he may have had a chance. But none of that happened, and I think Ohtani is the clear choice. Second Probly Vlad Jr.

Not a chance, Vladdy or Ohtani have this one in the bag.
-
Has there ever been a pitcher on the cover?
-
99.9 ohtani since he won mvp, but I think it should be vlad jr (also shouldve won mvp imo
