You would make a very poor GM if you made decisions on young players this quickly. Also as far as the cards go its fun to be able to play with the young guys you hear about all the time in the minors for your team. The cards are if the player reaches their absolute maximum potential which we can agree most won't but the cards need to be usable.
Wander Franco I get. He's a household name. MLB.com enshrined him in their front page the day he came up. I just don't get the Diamond card. He's an unproven player that should get a silver card at best and earn the rest depending on how he plays.
I'll never understand why, in this game, they go so crazy with Prospects. Some ppl probably love it, I personally would rather have cards based on real life players. Even if you have to release cards from a career year to make it relevant. At least it's based on some shred of truth.
Many complain about the abundance of diamonds in the game. Way over saturated to the point it just negates the entire experience of earning or packing a diamond. It's just ho-hum I've got another diamond in this pack.
So ,as opposed to maybe reducing the Diamonds, they open up this new channel..Future Stars..so they can inundate the Diamond market that much more.
And many of these other players, maybe you've heard of them but I haven't. Groshens, Priester, Crochet I've never ever heard of. Most of the so called "Future Stars" I haven't heard of. And, I may never hear of them except in this game this year.
Again, if you like it have fun with it. I personally think it's hokey (best word I can come up with).
Crochet has been in the majors since last year and created quite the buzz with his fastball when called up in 2020. Groshans is a top guy in the Jays farm system. Maybe the casual fan doesn't know names like that, but they aren't just some randoms.
Gotcha.
Don't know if I'm casual, but unless they appear to be someone that could potentially help me in one of the 3 Fantasy baseball leagues I'm in..they are invisible. No offense, it's just how out of touch I suppose I am.
Did look up Crochet. Appears to be a reliever for the White Sox that starts occasionally (not on most folks fantasy baseball radar screen). He's rostered on 13%. 6% start him.
I'm sure the casual White Sox fans know him...Casual Padres fans..prob not.
Honest question, do you think he deserves that 94 Diamond. Not trying to be "toxic", but I'll wager he never wins 10 games. That is not Diamond material.
But, 2 or 3 years from now I may be eating those words. Could be my #1 draft pick. Ha.
It's all relative..casual or expert..random or iconic. When you're trying to win money..like in FB..you better be a little more than casual. I've been fairly successful.
So do you know why some players are selected to be Future Stars? What's the criteria.
I play in 6 fantasy leagues, I write and do podcasts for fantasy baseball, especially the dynasty side of it. I would bet he wins more then 10 games, he's following the Chris Sale route, Sale was a reliever to. And here's the thing, so many players don't deserve 90s diamonds that get them, if we go by "deserve" as criteria, then we get how DD was in 2018, widely regarded as the worse content ever.
Great credentials, you should be proud. No doubt, based on that resume, you are less casual than me. And we're probably significantly more non-casual than 90% of your customers. These "future Stars" are being rolled out to a majority of customers that haven't a clue who they are.
Sometime you'll have to share why 2018 was such as disaster in the content area. If you have time.
Because they limited the 99s to the biggest legends, I think the only current players who got one was Pujols and Trout. There wasn't even 2 99s at some positions. This meant you were facing the same lineup every single time, if you think the Edward Cabrera or Crochet spam in ranked in 21 is bad, it was nothing compared to facing the same 8 batters over and over and over because they stuck to giving only the best of the best 99s
Also those consumers are probably pretty happy about it, if the casual 90% customer base didn't like the future stars, they would have stopped after MLB 20, but clearly they have data that shows those cards are a success.
I didn't experience 2018, but I like the idea of 99's being nearly unattainable.
FIFA, imo, has got a pretty good system when it comes to cards. If you want some top-shelf awesome player you have to give up the farm for it.
There are no gimmes. It's semi-difficult to swindle the auction market. Can be frustrating but it really ensures a player can't just walk in and build a super team in a couple hours.
The process is so very difficult in FIFA that when you get a walk-out from a pack you nearly jump for joy. I actually do a screen-save because it's so rare and meaningful.
All teams you played are composed of tons of different players. Rarely do you play any other team with even close to the same line-up as you. In fact, generally they won't be starting any of the same players you start. That's pretty cool.
Also, FIFA UT has NOTHING like "Future Stars" which is so fortunate I can't even put it into words. If they did it would be like releasing a card for some hyped-prospect from Walsall with a better card than Messi. They will never-ever do that because that fan-base and community is a bit more seasoned and discriminating.
FIFA FUT does have a line of cards called FUT Future Stars. What are you talking about? Everyone knows Curtis Jones is one of the better players in the PL, right?

Wander Franco might be the WORST player in history
__
I also need to say that I LIKE more fantasy cards. Not something like 125/125 power ichiro or Speedster Albert Pujols, but having a line of cards that somewhat realistically juices a player's attributes. Like if you had some super defense line, and Kevin Keirmaier had a card that was like his 87 defensively, but had better offensive stats. Doesn't have to be Buxton levels, but 80s contact would make it a fun card -

This got me thinking. Why does this game put out all these cards for "prospects" so grossly over inflated? I mean, I get the marketing angle. But if anyone were to follow along and note up the top-rung these prospects hit it's never even close to the loosely strewn Gold/diamonds you see before they throw the first MLB pitch or swing a bat. Some of them will be life long minor leaguers. Yet they're getting shutouts in RS against some of the greatest major leaguers to ever play the game.
I would guess not one of this year's prospects ever live up to the card they've gotten. Throwing a 110 mph fastball or hitting 40 HR in Minor leagues just means you got potential. But, one old coach always said "you know what potential means..you ain't ever done it".
Totally agree. Imagine a game giving you Babe Ruth and Franco on the same team, so not relaistic.
If you want realistic, go to OOTP.
Dude, not trying to split hairs but every year this game is billed as the most realistic sports simulation in the universe. Couple pulls from some of the past reviews:
MLB The Show is loyal to a system that tries to achieve as much realism as possible.
Honed over two decades, the algorithms and the developers implementing them have come to figure out how to make a balanced game based mostly on the numbers. But, there are outliers, and fans find them quickly once the game rolls out to the public. “Someone will tell us that a pitcher’s sinker is unhittable,” says Gill. “Then we’ll go home and play the retail version and realize that they’re right and even we can’t touch it, so we make tweaks.”
More of the same - Every year, the crew gathers three years of stats for players when it begins to curate athlete attributes. They come from the MLB as well as third-party stat companies. For pitchers, they gather familiar stats like strike-outs, pitch speeds, and pitching arsenal. Hitters get batting average, on-base percentage, and other familiar numbers. But, as stat tracking has advanced, the game integrates even more variables into its algorithms.
And, from Popular Science:
How MLB The Show became the most realistic baseball simulatorSo anyway, amigo, ya ought to be careful saying this game isn't realistic you might get some demerits.
But if you really pay attention you realize all the above is false relative to these "Future Superstars". Because there are no numbers, data, blah-blah to project these diamond cards with the outlandish ratings on them.
Not toxic..truth..don't confuse the 2. Sometimes when people say things you don't want to hear..whether truth or not..you interpret as toxic. Just saying.
Those reviews are all talking about the actual gameplay being realistic. It’s fairly obvious if you read them. They don’t say anything about the fantasy cards being rated realistically. So none of the reviews you posted have anything to do with your argument. Just saying.

Not really. If you read it, which anything longer than a Tweet seems to vex "some" out here...talks about how they take 3 years of data to develop ratings for cards. Doesn't say only for real cards. It suggests all cards. They for sure don't state (anywhere I've ever read) that in Future Superstars we have no criteria so we just make it up. Which, is pretty much what they do.

And, didn't look like one of them was more than 92 after powering them up. That still sux, I don't think any card that is based purely on potential and speculation should be more than 80% of what the highest rated card is. In any game.
I'm not saying I'm a huge FIFA fan. They get a lot wrong. But, it is next to impossible to get the best cards in that game.
Anyone can easily (invest a few hours) get the best cards in MLB the Show..And that completely dilutes the reward of getting them. MLB the Show high-level diamonds are just like the participation medals they give out in Youth Soccer. Just play the game..you'll get them.
Some people really like the idea they don't have to put a lot of effort into the quest for great cards.
Some people don't like the premise. And that's just fine and dandy.

FIFA also had cards last year with the gimmick of the player playing out of position. Example of the striker Romelu Lukaku at center back. That would be like SDS giving David Ortiz a catcher card, or Mike Trout a shortstop card, just to create "more content". I really dont think you want to be comparing the Show to FIFA. The show wins that battle nearly every single time (squad battles being the only exception).

I stand corrected. I hadn't played FIFA in a couple years. Must be something new.
Like everything in FUT, though, I'm sure it's a major challenge (some will never be able to pull it off) to get those players. You also have to navigate through FUT objectives to power-up the Future Stars.
Both have goods and bads. DD is a lot of fun. FUT can be too.
I played FUT a lot of years and never owned an Icon. I had a couple loaners, but those cards were out of my ability to land. Cards like Pele and Renaldo were only owned by the elite or unbelievably lucky.
You could buy them, but relative to DD it would be like having to pay $10 million for Trout.
Probably a happy medium somewhere.

Release him. Hes a dud.

You would make a very poor GM if you made decisions on young players this quickly. Also as far as the cards go its fun to be able to play with the young guys you hear about all the time in the minors for your team. The cards are if the player reaches their absolute maximum potential which we can agree most won't but the cards need to be usable.
I think the cards are cool because it gives baseball fans who didn’t follow all the ins and outs of baseball an idea of who prospects are. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched a game where a guy came up and I thought, oh cool, I remember that guy from dd. I wonder how he turned out

I think youre looking at these prospect cards backwards - they are there to reflect what COULD be not will be. This isnt SDS saying Priester or Cabrara are going to be the next locks to win the Cy Young.
Its easy to look back at guys with 20/20 hindsight and say his prospect card was too high. Knowing what he's become do you think the 24 teams that picked before the Angels in 2009 would pass on Mike?
If we look at the Scouting Reports on Kelenic we see he's been scouted as having the following:
60 Power, Arm, Hitting
55 Fielding and Running50 is considered a Major League Average on the 20/80 scale.
Id say kelenic's prospect card does a decent job of reflecting those stats.

Honestly I don’t enjoy the FS cards because I’m not a big enough baseball guy to know them all, but it’s hard to argue with the guys they pick. A lot of the guys the original future stats are now studs, same with the second round. As they’ve added more and more it’s get diluted but this kinda speaks for itself.

I haven’t used him because my OP’d cap is my SS but I have faced him every game since he dropped & haven’t given up a single hit to him. Dude is just not good.
Funny that he went 6 for 10 off of you after this post,

Not that I don't trust you, but that link looks like some blog somebody made up. Let's just say I believe you believe this to be true.
I'm sure someone could just do a screen print of their 2017 Dashboard showing the Future Stars and share it with us.

The MLB The Show 2017 marketplace still exists on this website itself, I can get you pictures of that if you want. All the sellable ones show up there, I'm sure I can find the non sellable Moncada and Devers on reddit
Actually, here this is much easier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdsqiDAl02Q

But, nobody can ever say that forum chat doesn't inspire. I went out and did a very little bit of searching. Reddit had a big thread from Sept. 2018 discussing #MLBtheshow future stars just released that week.
Ppl whining about Bote, Carantini, Ryan Borucki, Austin Hays getting cards. And, in hindsight, they had every right to complain.
From this I found a Twitter link showing Some cat named Dawel Lugo. Stephan Gonsalaves. WTF? They did have Brett Phillips, Colin Moran, and Austin Hays who actually made it to The Show, but far-far-far from anything noteworthy. They did get one right..Shane Bieber. One out of God knows how many.
Here is a Twitter link with the 2018 from AL Central. https://twitter.com/sporer/status/1042204793245245441/photo/4 #SonyPartner, #TheShow18
Do some research, it's pretty interesting..in a funny sort of way. Not knocking the prognosticators at SDS. They do their best with what they got. Problem is scouts get paid a whole lot of money and are 'sposd to be experts and completely blow it. Who should expect a bunch of software developers to get it right? There are just way too many variables.

Um, every single future star previous to 2020 made the show, so all those you named played at some point. (Because they didn't have the rights to use minor league names at the time because that is separate from the major league players association license)
I don't need to do research because I played then. Yes, not every future star is going to be a future star. Newsflash, no one is shocked by that. As you said, scouts miss all the time. No one is looking at the future stars series and thinking "Wow I guess all these guys are can't miss names"!

Making the Show and making an impact are 2 different things. Hey, I said it's not easy to predict how guys in the minor leagues are going to do at the MLB level..if they'll ever make it. It's extremely hard to do.
I'm really not trying to criticize guys that do their best to guess right. Actually play poker with dudes like that once a week. Ha..I jest.
But, really I think when you actually get 20% of the lower "A" level guys that you Diamond up even to the Show, you're pretty successful.
Now, does that make giving some 20-year old single "A" pitcher a 95 Diamond any easier for a skeptic like me to take. Sure doesn't.

Sure, but you didn't know that they all made the show before I told you, as evidenced by "They did have Brett Phillips, Colin Moran, and Austin Hays who actually made it to The Show", so really you're just dancing around to support your beliefs, which is fine, I can see they aren't going to change.
But like I've said before, SDS has the data, they must have seen the success of these cards or they wouldn't bring them back, so it stands the reason the majority of users are completely fine with it.

What, you didn't read my post correctly or I missed a comma or you missed a comma. I know Brett Phillips, Colin Moran, and Austin Hays made it and are still playing. Just not real well.
Did I know Dawl Lugo made it for about a week and went straight back to the Mexican leagues? Sure didn't and I bet there ain't a soul on Super Jeopardy the Sports Edition who woulda known that little bit of trivia.
C'mon man. I don't want to argue with you. OK, this game gets it right always. These Future Stars with the 95's and what not will all live up to the hype. Not one paying fan has any right whatsoever to complain or even joke a little bit about it.
Sorry I upset you. But, dude, people aren't always going to say what you want to here..and that doesn't make them wrong.

Unfortunately they’ve gone far away from realism with a lot of cards in DD and especially prospect/future stars.
I think when Future Stars were introduced in 17 is when a lot of that stuff went out the door. Then came Pepe Alazar. And now Future Stars are juiced out of their minds.
Back in 17, Future Stars were slightly above average diamonds (the Tyler O’Neil future stars in 21) so it wasn’t that bad.
Future Stars and Prospects should top out at 90-91 IMO.
