I actually don't know what he meant by cheesy. I did not think I was doing anything bad. Once I bunted against the shift (I learned that from other players online) and I did a sacrifice bunt (which turned into a hit) in extra innings to tie the game. He finally scored 2 in the 5th inning to win.
Is bunting cheesy? Those 2 bunts were my only hits so what am I supposed to do? I am not a good hitter.
-
I don't see a problem with it.
-
Bunting is a grey area IMO. Normally I would say these two situations are not cheesy but if they were your only 2 hits I can see where your opponent is coming from
-
I had one guy almost bunt exclusively in an Events game. My fielders did some really dumb things and he got a bunch of hits from it. I wasn't mad at him, I just wished I handled the bunts better.

IMO bunting is fine. If you are trying to win and you are not a good hitter you have to do whatever you can to win. I don't support someone who bunts even though they are a very good hitter.
-
You can see from my batters' batting averages that I am not a good hitter. My best chance is to get the starter to make a bunch of pitches and get tired. Then I might get some hits. When I get a runner on third and less than 2 outs a bunt is always in play. And I expect it from my opponent and pitch accordingly.
-
This is part of the reason online play is horrible
-
Don't like getting bunted on against the shift? Turn the shift off.
You better believe I'm trying to bunt at least once with a lefty against someone like Hader or Chapman in a close game if they bring those guys in to face my better lefty hitters.
Its one thing to situationally bunt, its another to build your lineup around speed dudes and just bunt every at bat imo.
-
I've noticed some players have turned off the shift (these were obviously good players). I'll have to figure out how to do that myself. I've only noticed this in the past few days.

General settings, Auto-shift off.
Be wary though that this does eliminate 3B playing in on speed guys so if you think someone may bunt you need to adjust.
-
I used to be a strictly no bunt kind of guy, but I started using it this year couple times a game with my speed guys. One of the beauties of baseball is there is no one right way to play the game. If I’m leading off an inning with Lou Brock and you leave your infielders back you can’t get mad when I lay one down for a hit.
-
Thanks! I see the good players making defensive adjustments batter by batter but I'm not at that stage yet!

I spent years playing with the Shift. I mean, if you want to bunt with someone like Gallo or Thome or whatever I'll give you a single instead of risking a solo HR gladly.
I turned it off because I was tired of giving up bad hits and the OF always being shifted to Deep which makes plays at the plate impossible on singles with runners on 2nd.
-
I handle the bunt situations pretty well with the shift on. You just have to know how to pitch and when to expect it.
-
This is great to hear these different strategies!
-
Since you asked….bunting against the shift is pretty cheesy.
-
Sounds like you are making cheese sandwiches in the toaster

You don’t have to make any adjustments to your defense to defend against the bunt. Guys that do are usually very predictable and if you throw pitches in the dirt they can’t bunt them fair and eventually they’ll stop trying. They might get one here and there but those guys can never hit them in to score

If you like winning by using zero skill then bunting is for you. Just hold a button, close your eyes, and let the game do the work for you.
I remember when I wasn’t a good hitter. You know how I got better? By swinging the bat.

I am really happy for you. (Really!) I will swing the bat and sometime make contact. Please don't think I bunt all the time. It is a strategic decision. If the game is tied or I am 1 down I might use it.
It's actually a legal play, it's not even against the unwritten rules. If I am up in the game or down by 2 or more I swing away and usually miss.

My issue with bunting is that it takes no skill. Sac bunting is okay but bunting for hits or to score someone, I don't agree with just for the simple fact that when you bunt you are just letting the computer do the work for you. If they actually made it where you had to work to get a bunt down then I would be okay with it.

i have never seen a very good hitter bunt

If you bunt to get a hit with a speedster or advance a runner, fine. But the squeeze to me is a female dog move because they never fixed how the infield reacts or the urgency of the pitcher, so it’s an exploit of a flaw in the game.
-
Anyone that complains about bunts like that is just a crybaby. Those are fine and part of baseball. They'll cry over whatever is successful vs them. If you got a hit swinging he would call you lucky or something instead.
Next time just say -- well thanks for the wine, it pairs well!!

Of course it takes skill it is both timing and release of triangle to deaden or push the bunt.
