Offensively, he was everything you could ask for from a middle infielder, and was an absolute nightmare to cheer for the team against him....
Defensively? He was extremely overrated and justified in that everyone has come around to believe that. His metrics are very bad, and had virtually no range. The fact he won gold gloves at all shows how broken that whole thing is, which is well known mostly because of himThe very fact that he won more gold gloves than Cal Ripken Jr still annoys me. Jeter has no business being in the same room as a gold glove award.
100%!
Ripken is better than Jeter in every way but you wouldn't know it from the hype Jeter created..The famous plays they gush over is what gets me. Flying into the stands? He didn’t need to. He could have slid after making the catch. The flip to the catcher in the playoffs? He was completely out of position and cutoff a throw that was already going to the catcher. Oh and Giambi was safe.
THANK you, if Jeter was a Pirate he would not be talked about NEAR as much. But you know..Nu Yooak, so everything is the best they've ever seen. Great player, but I always though that diving play was 80% hot dogging for dramatic effect

Love the jeter haters btw. Always make excuses to his greatness and can’t accept the fact that he was legit superstar his entire career. “Bad fielding” “subpar hitter” “didn’t deserve gold glove” “look at his dWAR” lol love it!
So what exactly are you arguing here?
Don’t look at all the stuff that shows he wasn’t as good as we say. Look at the mythical stuff that I won’t mention. I’m not a hater. What made him a superstar? Honest question.
Was it the fact that the only category he ever led the league in was hits twice? The fact that he never won an MVP? Was it that Mr Clutch hit basically the same in the playoffs as he did in the regular season?
Plus this all started with someone trying to argue that he was underrated. You want to talk about an underrated player, especially a shortstop? His name is Bobby Grich. That’s a man that is criminally underrated and should be in the HOF.
-
First off...very cool design and careful consideration of stats from OP.
Second, I am by no means a yankee fan, but jeter was the glue for 5 championship teams. He always seemed to be in the middle of it and played under the brightest of lights in the biggest of moments. He also played at a time when highlights were being replayed every night.
So, he is the product of multiple factors that others didn’t have apply to them, many of which were out of his control.
So, I guess put me in the jeter fanboy club. Is there a special sign up for non yankee fans?
-
Also, since I got a double post, I’ll edit this one and say thanks for the bar stool arguments here that I can’t have my 3 year old. I appreciate it.

Heck yeah dude. People just want to hate on him because he was a Yankee.
"Would he still be this famous if he was on the pirates?" If he won 5 WS and was consistently great every postseason? Absolutely.
Dude was a crucial part of repeated championship success and one of the greatest offensive infielders of our era, anyone who wants to paint him as a "borderline HOFer" or anything worse is just immature and can't recognize greatness beyond their favorite team.

We can quibble over the throw but Giambi was safe. If there was review then, it would have been overturned.

no it wouldn't have lol. he swipes the back leg before he's on the plate and there certainly isn't enough evidence to overturn anything.
the glove is touching him by this point and he appears above but not touching the plate. at the very least it couldn't be overturned.

I used the 3000 hit club art style but this is largely a representation of his career, power is boosted slightly to reflect his 3000th hit, which was a home run.
Before you complain about his fielding... Jeter's weak aspect of his defense was his range, not his F% or Arm. He suffered low dWAR due to his range, which is primarily represented by the Reaction stat. On balls he got to, his fielding and throwing was good.
Before you complain about his power... Jason Bay had an .892 OPS during his 7-year peak and got 96/100 power. Jeter's career OPS vs. lefties is .893. From 1998-2006 Jeter had a .868 OPS, so these stats being lower than Bay is very reasonable.
Thanks for all the memories Jeter, one of 3 shortstops EVER to achieve 90+ oWAR (Honus Wagner and Alex Rodriguez)
Looks super fine to me except for clutch ... they should add October clutch ...

But ya.. Jeter is great man.. like, Robin Yount, Ernie Banks great.. He's not Cal.. and that's the point.. and those 5 rings weren't because of Jeter alone.. this isn't basketball.. they were because the Yankees were running payrolls double every other team. They have roughly the same OPS+ for their career..
Ripken obviously way more power, with Cal's 431 to Jeter's 260...
Cal actually has a higher OPS with RISP than Jeter.
.824 to .810...Of course Cal didn't get many postseason at bats besides winning his 1 world series in 1983, but he hit .866 OPS when he was there.
Jeter .838 OPS. Getting every chance because he's on the Yankees...
So no.. again, your assumptions that Jeter is more clutch than a legend like Cal is wrong.. hype machine strikes again.
