I mean, I wouldn't ascribe it to only newer players, a great example is Bob Gibson, here is a quote of his "I guess I was never much in awe of anybody. I think you have to have that attitude if you're going to go far in this game."
The reason we hear about it more now is social media, I've always been against holding up past players and putting them on a pedestal, there have been plenty of great players who act just like Lebron, there just wasn't 2 million people all talking about it on Twitter.
I can only imagine how people would react on Twitter these days if Lebron said something like that, they'd be like. "BuT WhAt AbOuT JoRdAn"
I think maybe we agree, we are just saying it differently. If I’m incorrect let me know. Bob Gibson’s quote that you cited is far different than saying “I want my damnnn respect” and “I’m the GOAT”. Bob Gibson never did much trash talking. Now if you wanted to talk with Bob I’m sure he’d oblige you. But nobody ever did cuz they were all terrified of him. Even Mr. October wouldn’t look him in the eye. He let his numbers do the talking.
Bron had my respect years ago when he beat GS by himself......with a little help from Kyrie. That was probly the single most dominant performance I’ve ever seen. But don’t tell me I have to call you the GOAT. That’s for me to decide! And you.....each and every one of us! -

Stuff gets Magnifyed with social media, many players would be seen in a different light if they played in this age.

Anyone that watched Jordan’s career knows he’s the GOAT. Don’t even need to argue or debate on here.
LeBron fanboys are cringe like when it comes to this stuff anyway.
I’m not even a Jordan fan, but I know he’s the best I ever seen do it.
LeBron is great in his own right, but he ain’t Jordan.
Sorry if that upsets you. You saying LeBron is the goat is just pointless for me to hear. Think what you want. Everyone has their own opinion.
I’d even take Kobe over LeBron. I like players that don’t team up just to win a ring.

Not upset at all...just the negative narrative that surrounds bron for sticking it out for 7 years on an absolute awful Cleveland team before actually playing with great players is perplexing to me.
Love Kobe but would he stay if Shaq wasn't traded to them? How about Gasol?
Would Jordan be Jordan if he didn't have two HOF on his team?
Its like saying Currys ships are legit because they drafted Green and Klay Thompson. No doubt he would bounce if management didn't provide the pieces.
I respect your opinion,MJ was an absolute killer and I am a bulls fan. Just respect the heck out of Bron and what he has had done for the game.

I respect LeBron too. Consider him statistically the best player of all time. But that’s just based on how phenomenally he’s held up and his longevity.
But Jordan in his prime is something I will never forget until the day I die. If you never experienced it, it’s hard to explain to younger people.
I honestly hate these debates. You can spin it anyway you want and find reasons for both. LeBron is a completely different player too.
Now if we are asking, who’s the best SF of all time? Then I’m going with LeBron. I like debating by position.
Because overall, it will always be Jordan for me unless something else comes along like him and is better.
Magic
Jordan
LeBron
Power Forward (no clear cut #1 in my opinion, this position all time is very debatable)
Kareem Abdul Jabbar -

........wants his “damnnn respect”. He already had my respect for beating GSW basically by himself. What he really wants is for everyone to say he’s the GOAT. This is what I hate about today’s athletes. They always wanna hear they are the best or......the goat. You don’t see Jordan thumpin his chest sayin he’s the Goat. He’s just chillin smokin cigars and sippin cognac. You never saw Bill Russell flashing his 11 rings. Never saw John Wooden sayin he’s the GOAT coach. It is precisely that, which all those gentleman great!!! Still needs to win at least 3 more titles as I see it.
I don't think he wants everyone to say he's the goat. Why he is asking for respect, I don't know. I don't watch much basketball these days. Is it because a lot of people just don't like him? Did you see the last dance? Jordon is not humble one bit. Russell and Wooden were from a different era. I've always like Lebron. He seems humble and the ultimate team player.

Now I'm hearing Trump called LeBron a hater on twitter. Maybe that's why the respect comments, IDK.

I personally think it's because whenever his name is mentioned, most people can't help themselves, they have to include the thought that Michael Jordan is better, they cannot mention Lebron's name without making sure to note that.

Lebron has the most haters of any athlete ever. He came in at 18 and was compared to Jordan out of the get go and actually lived up to the comparison. Lebron Haters/Jordan fans just refuse to believe anyone is close to their God.

This is interesting. I will say this, watching michael Jordan as a teenager was awesome. But here are some interesting LeBron stats...
Points: 3rd all time (4000 point behind Kareem)
Assists: 8th all time
Rebounds: 54th all time
In the playoffs, he is the all time leader in games played, points, and steals. He is 2nd in assists and rebounds.
The guy is 35 years old and is still in the argument as the best player currently in his sport.
It’s fun to have the argument about who’s the best. But, you can’t deny that the guy shows up, makes his teammates better, and competed like crazy. Hes taken a few teams to the finals that would have no business getting out of the first round if he wasn’t on their team.
If I had the first overall pick I don’t know who I’d pick.
-
It's always fun reading people debate each other on the GOAT convo. Unfortunately it usually doesn't remain civil very long lol.
I personally believe you need to discount championships completely when having this debate. Do you think bill russell is the goat with 11? I don't. There was 8 teams in the NBA at the beginning of the 60's and 14 by the end of the decade. Bill played with 7 HOF's throughout his 11 rings, they where the super team before anyone dreamed of the "big 3" lol.
I'm aware basketball is a team sport. But it's one of the few where you can look at someone individually and see how they can take over a game by themselves. Personally I think Jordan, Kobe, and Lebron are each the goats of a different decade. If I had to pick for all time then I'd go Jordan 1A, Kobe 1B, and Lebron at 2.
At the end of the day, everyone's opinion is strictly their own. Just because you think one thing and someone else thinks something else, doesn't mean either one is wrong. Our "experts" in the NBA field have not established set parameters on the qualifications to how one becomes the "GOAT". Until they do, and they never will, this debate will always just be fun banter between people with no way of resolution.
-
Jordan fans always remind you the guy never lost in the finals, but forget it’s because he was getting stomped out by the Celtics and Pistons in the conference final year after year lol.
Without a team good enough Jordan couldn’t even come close. Never Khawi Leonarded his was to a chip, never even Jimmy Bultlered a team to the final lol.
