I’ve never been entirely clear what happened to the mid-2010s Royals. Back to back pennants, 2015 championship, loaded with young talent- I thought they’d have a great 5-7 year run. But then as soon as it started it was over, and they’ve been terrible since. Is there a Royals fan or someone who followed it a little more closely that can fill me in on why they had such a rapid decline?
Same thing for Tim Lincecum. I’m assuming there’s a physiological explanation for his decline considering he weighed like 26 pounds soaking wet, but I don’t know much about the specifics.
I’m an east coast National League fan so I didn’t keep up much with either of these stories.
The Royals were too small of a market team to pay all of the core guys that were on those teams. Moustakas, Hosmer, Cain... If I remember most of them came into Free Agency the same year. So they cut ties and started a re-build. So they kept Salvy and Gordo and let the others go. Also, their bullpen was REALLY REALLY good then and that has fallen apart too
Ventura also tragically died. Which still stinks that that happened to such a young energetic dude.
He would've been fun to watch develop

by 2018 the Royals had lost 4/5 core players from their run (Cueto he was big in the playoffs 2016, Zobrist 2016, Cain 2018, Moustakas 2018, and Hosmer 2018)
As far as teams that faded to soon the Montreal Expos of 94 come to mind. they were 74-40 at the time of the strike and on pace for 100+ wins and a year later had a hard time getting 66 wins.

I’m a Phils fan but the 94 Expos still make me sad. Talk about a dynasty in the making. I could’ve grown up hating two teams and not just the Braves!

At the time, the Royals had been making regular practice of taking in more from luxury tax than they were spending on the field. That had been their pattern for several years. It was almost criminal what they'd been doing to their fans. Their farm system produced and enough pieces clicked at just the right time. They weren't going to open the checkbook to keep the talent though.

A more lesser known guy would Allen Craig who was a fantastic hitter the Cards and mysteriously fell off a cliff and was out of baseball shortly after.

Ike Davis after bumping into David Wright on the infield and getting injured. Pedro Feliciano after the Mets burned him out during his time with them

The 2016 Marlins. We all know why, do a line for Jose in rememberance, but man that team was something. Even without Fernandez, they had Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna, Bour, Gordon, Realmuto coming up. Offensive powerhouse. 2 MVPs in that OF.
