How do they decide the ultimate reward in a program?
-
Sorry I couldn’t think of a snappier title. I’m playing through the Incognito program and just wondering how it was decided that the big reward for finishing would be Brandon Belt. This isn’t exactly keeping me up at night but sometimes the end game reward makes total sense and others, none whatsoever. So if we’re only able to choose between the cards selected for the program and you could make any of these cards the top card (a 97 in this case), who would you choose?
POTM of course you get the lightning card. A 99 of a usually coveted player. Collection rewards are almost always players people want. The Charisma program seemed to have a pretty logical progression, Luis Castillo was a solid choice for the last card of the ones selected.
Even the Kaiju program, Billy Williams is the only HoFer in the group and he is the last reward, maybe these aren’t great cards but from a collectors stand point, of the cards chosen, he should be the last reward.
So with that premise, shouldn’t it be Boggs? Only HOFer in the group, none of these cards are particularly coveted so why not give the slot to a HoFer? None of it really matters, just curious what others think.

Probably for the same reason they gave him the incognito name The Captain. He self-proclaimed himself the Giants' Captain, but it wasn't official...

I'd like to know their thought process for a lot of these programs...but i am kinda looking forward to finishing this. I usually smash everything with Belts gold cards and i did hit 3 homeruns with this card in the showdown.

Nice, I’m gonna definitely give him a shot and certainly am not a huge fan of Boggs’ swing. But Boggs is certainly the greater legend/player

I hate Wade Boggs (yes even though he was a Yankee*) but i can't even lie....his card is kind of a beast for me.

Is it? I’ll have to give him a shot. I think I liked his 99 in 21 but never really could get in a groove with him last year.
Was it his history with the BoSox? Or just not a fan. I always thought it was crazy he won a WS with the Yankees after so many years with the Sox. Same with Clemens.

A combination of things really. When i was growing up in the northeast, it was always Boggs and Mattingly neck and neck every year in the MVP discussion, best player in the AL conversation (of course, that was probably amplified due to the fact that i'm a Yankees fan born and raised in New England). Obviously, i was on the Mattingly side of that argument. When i saw Boggs on that horse trotting around the stadium after the 96 world series, i couldnt help but feel that Mattingly got cheated.
It just didnt feel right to me. Here comes this guy from Red Sox and he wins a world series the year after Mattingly retired. Just felt cheap. Of all the world series wins i've been alive for, thats always been and always will be my least favorite.
Of course, my favorite Boggs moment, and probably the only one i'll ever enjoy, is the vignettes he did with Mr Perfect in WWF/E.
As far as Clemens, it wasnt the same feeling of cheapness with him because of the buffer seasons with Toronto. He didnt just leave Boston and almost instantly win with the Yankees lol. Same with Johnny Damon. There was a few years to get used to him in stripes before winning the WS.

That has not always been the case in previous years. This is the first time we have gotten a 99 as a reward in the very first month. I could also argue that Matt Chapman is no more a coveted player than Belt.
But to answer the question I doubt any of us know, or will ever be privy to, their decision making process.

And Damon actually won a WS with the Sox first...

I was watching a game the other night that featured Wade Boggs (might’ve been ‘86 ws game 6 but not certain) and I’m 100% positive I heard the announcer say that he had only 3 pop outs for the entire previous season! Impressive.

Oh he was great for sure. I'd never deny that. When i was a kid, my father and my grandfather were Red Sox fans and i was at Fenway a ton more than i was at Yankee Stadium. Im old enough to have seen guys like Fred Lynn, Carl Yazstremski, Dewey Evans and Jim Rice play in person. My "dislike" for Boggs is more a team loyalty thing really and nothing personal. I'll absolutely use his cards in the game.

Seems like I remember SI doing an article once on his superstitions, do you remember? I also remember something about a rubber chicken but can’t remember if it was JUST one of his ball cards (I know he had a card once where that chicken was visible) or if it was due to another one of his funny routines.
So the question is which came first the chicken or the Boggs?

You know I’ll never forget seeing Wade Boggs in the dugout as he wept bitterly at the end of the 86 WS. Even though I was euphoric with glee at time due to the Mets having conquered, I couldn’t help but feel for guy - he left nothing on the playing field and yet it just wasn’t enough…who can’t relate to that in some form? I pulled for him from that moment on. When he followed up Bo Jackson’s epic all star game lead off homer with one of his own I thought that was a great moment and he looked like he was having the time of his life when he made it back to the dugout.
Man, I love baseball.

Missed seeing your posts around here haha. I personally think you, @SchnauzerFace_MLBTS and @arvcpa_PSN need a podcast of some kind regarding this game. I’d tune in every episode.
Boggs- superstitious? Sounds about right.

What an incredibly kind thing to say about those two and whomever it is that you must have me confused with hahaha!
However…I have heard it said that I have a face for radio.

I know what you mean. I’m a Cards fan myself. Times weren’t so good here in the late 80’s early 90’s. So I started rooting for the Red Sox. Later in the 90’s when Boggs jumped ship I was like…..man how could you do that? But now that I’m older and understand that time is limited, I get it.

Speaking of which, do you know who had an awesome (maybe even the awesomest ever) walk up song? Friggin Hulk Hogan!!! Does anyone remember? It want to say it was still his music when he did the unthinkable and pinned Andre the Giant (May God rest his spectacular soul) - and up to when he took on that absolutely horrid “I am a real American” song.
It would start with this killer piano riff and you’d hear the voices chanting “HULK…HULK….HULK” and then some Eddie Van Halen -esque hair band distortion pedal guitar comes is and something that sounds like a friggin cinema…Im nearly in tears thinking about this walk up music right now
-
Oh man I friggin FOUND IT!
Oh lawdy you can’t tell me that song doesn’t have some kind of metaphysical power. It makes me want to make my bed, eat my wheaties, wear my headband and be the first brother tucker up the rope at gym class! Woooooo!
