I'm not sure the Cardinals would have let him develop this way, his ERA was okish in 2018-2019, but everything else really wasn't, I imagine the Cards would have moved him to the pen. Miami had no reason not to let him work through it

Too many Cardinals fans crying about that trade 5 years after it happened. You never know what's going to happen in a trade, especially when you're trading prospects. Go look at his minor league stats. There's nothing there to suggest that he would be a future Cy Young award winner. It is what it is.

I think Ryne Sandberg was a throw in or PTBNL when he was traded from Phillies to Cubs.

Who was the other one?
Most fans liked the trade at the time. It's always easy to judge these things in hindsight. Did it end up being bad? Yes. But there was no way to predict that ahead of time.
Let's not forget that the GM you said should have been fired for that move also managed to get Goldschmidt for almost nothing and actually got Colorado to pay them to take Arenado.

I am not saying one is worst than the other. In hindsight yes but if they stayed where they were would they have developed in the same way or be used in same way. Look at Chris Taylor and Max Muncy, Taylor in Sea was garbage and Muncy the same in Oak, Muncy was not even in the Majors when the Dodgers sign him. Players change teams some perform better and others don't. The Mets gave up on Justin Turner because of injuries. It all just happen to work out for the dodgers. Trades will not always work out. Look at what DET could have been if they held on to there pitchers, I think it was something like 5 pitchers they had that went on to win Cy Young awards.
