Looking to Switch Over to a Monitor
-
Hey guys- been playing since MLB 17 and I’ve been regularly making CS the past few years.. have NEVER gotten over the hump and made WS.
Have always played on a regular old flat screen 46 inch tv. I’ve always heard that switching to gaming monitors DOES make a difference in swing timing input and I’m ready to make the investment this year.
Problem for me is I’m not really very savvy with monitor/CPU lingo/knowledge so I’m just kind of shopping around at Wal-Mart, eBay, Mercari and not exactly knowing which one I should go with or what will be sufficient? I’m mainly seeing 24 inch and 27 inch models..
Looking to get some help on what would be a good choice that isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg. Thanks in advance guys..

Here is what I bought last year.
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VX248H-1920x1080-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B00GMGHCVG
Nolan Ryan went from impossible on HoF to getting a giddy feeling when I saw him start against me.

Thanks Bob... appreciate the post.

No problem. As far as size goes, it’s all about your distance from the screen. I sit at a desk 3 feet away so 24” is fine.

You just plug the PlayStation into it? What makes this so much better... please advise

It’s just a normal computer screen, but essentially it’s designed to do one thing, plays games as fast and smooth as possible. A TV needs speakers, built in wifi, the extra hardware to run Netflix, internet browsers, some have cameras for phone calls and everything else. They do multiple things and as a result usually have a massive “input delay” meaning when you press X to swing, the process takes longer to register.
Monitors just do one thing “play games” incredibly fast, and cost a fraction of a TV that’s designed to do multiple things. This game is basically all timing, you see the ball and swing, I’ve never played a game that it made such a difference but at the end of the day it’s just a game so it’s not necessary, but if you do care to see the difference look up my batting averages in game and you will see clearly the year I bought a monitor and raised my average close to .100
Sites like Rtings.com will show you the input lag of most TVs and monitors.

It all comes down to input lag but I will say that many new tv’s in game mode are very close to gaming monitors. A monitor is about 10ms of input lag while a tv can be 15-20ms. Some say the difference is also the smaller screen helps you focus more on the incoming pitch.

I’ll let you guys know on this thread what my true personal assessment of the monitor is when I go ahead and log about a week of play with one.. guess I’m gonna go ahead and drop about $150 on one, unless I can find a used one for a better price on eBay or Mercari.
I’m pretty excited to give it a try.. I’m a pretty decent player so hopefully this gets me over the mountain top. We shall see.. ️

Yes I have that! But I always played on a sony Bravia. I hate playing on a monitor though.
So I went from a 46 Sony with 700ms to my 27 asus and I was hitting bombs on legend on practice. So I bought a $300 55 inch tv with 11ms.
I suggest definitely switching to either one. The game felt pointless on the older tv. I can actually see pitches develop now.
Think in a game where milliseconds are crucial it helps a lot.

Switching to a monitor makes a HUGE difference. Just look for one with a 1ms response time. Size doesn't really matter.

Personally I believe that anything over 27" is too large for a monitor. I would recommend you grab one with at least 144hz and no more than 1ms response. I took the Pro out of living room and put it with PC setup when I recently upgraded desk and had the extra space. It makes an incredible difference. SO much so that initially when pitching I was still using pulse and was hitting the button far to early because I wasn't use to the immediate feedback the monitor provides. My brain had been programmed to do press X slightly early, albeit very slightly as my TV has a game mode with 30ms response, but WOW what a huge difference it has on performance.

You have no idea what you are talking about to be honest. First of all “1ms of response time” is not input lag. No monitor has 1ms of input lag. Most monitors have about 10ms of input lag and that is very good. You are confusing terms. Second of all buying a monitor with 144hz refresh rate is a complete waste of money for a PS4 or PS4 Pro user. They are capped at 60hz so you will see no added benefit and will just be wasting money. The only case I would tell someone to buy one is if they were sure they would be getting a PS5 where it won’t be capped at 60hz.

I like to think considering I’ve been gaming on PC and building my own rigs for years that I know a little bit lol. I’m speaking in broad terms of Monitor purchases. In today’s modern age there’s no reason to have a monitor for gaming that’s less than 144hz especially considering it’s not a premium buy-in and if the guy ever wants to get into PC gaming he’s on the right track...Secondly I understand input lag and response time differences, I just didn’t make that clear in my post because I was typing on phone and didn’t want to go in depth in a thread about the differences in panels, benefits of input lag in contrast to response times, etc
