Jeter would have diamond fielding
-
For comparison Michael Young is a few spots ahead of Jeter on career fielding percent at SS and his Signature series card(which is supposed to be whole career) has 83 fielding. So I would say Jeter tops out at 80 at best.

I agree he had poor range, as represented by the reaction stat in the game, the fielding stat is fielding percentage which he was fine at.
You’re arguing with someone who doesn’t disagree with you

Sure he did well when he got to a ball. Sure he can have 90 fielding. But that reaction is the worst of all time at his position. I’m a diehard Yankees fan. I love Jeter. When people bring up his defense I don’t even try to defend it. Anyone biting on OP’s statement, just let it be.

Ok fair enough, I'm just saying probably not a diamond fielder but you've back tracked and said gold would be fine so I'll drop it. I'm not going to sit here and say he wasn't amazing because he was, he had the uncanny ability to up his game when it mattered most and if you were a fan of the opposing team you hated seeing him in the lineup.

The most intelligent statement on this thread.

Or are you maybe referring to this gem?

Best part of this one is he just walks away lol. There's tons of other highlights just like these 2 instances.
Another webgem. Lol

I’m not sure, “He could field stuff hit right to him. He just couldn’t get to anything.”, is the ringing endorsement you seem to think it is.
He is what he is. An above average to great hitter, who played a premium position very poorly and refused to move for better fielders (cough…ARod).

I think this is the Diamond fielding they were talking about. Oh, and the play at 3:53, the over the shoulder, in traffic, potential head on collisions, yeah… Every respectable ball player over the course of their careers has made at least one play that they knew was a gimme. Ozzie, Brett, they’ve all had one. It happens…unless you’ve never played competitive ball in your life, you wouldn’t know.

Anyone who tries to tell you bronze fielding is being dumb or intentionally ignorant, Jeter’s dWAR was poor because of his range factor, not his fielding percentage. Range factor is represented by the reaction stat, not the fielding stat, so if you really want to be annoying and nit picky about what his stats would be, it’s more accurate for him to have like 90 fielding with 50 reaction
nah, Jeter's range was average and fielding was average, His arm would be the only thing in the 90's. Andrelton Simmons range blows Jeter's range out the water if we're going to compare diamond fielding.

Jeter was not a good defensive player. Anyone that knows baseball knows this.

Your first post said Jeter should have 90 fielding. That is comedic.

Since you think Jeter should have diamond defense... Let's compare him with Jimmy Rollins who has above average but not amazing fielding and has had diamond fielding in MLB The Show on his 99 overall Signature Series card. You're argument is that his range is the reason people say he is a bad defender. I am not saying he is a "bad" defender but more so an average/run of the mill defender. You are right that his range is awful as indicated by his -89.3 RngR (Range runs above average) and 414 OOZ(Plays made Out of Zone), compared to Rollins at -9.7 RngR and 717 OOZ. When you look at the complete picture though, he is mediocre in almost every aspect. His UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating in runs above average) is -66.1, compared to Rollins at 48.4. Also, his overall FV (Fielding Value) at -137.1, Rollins at 37.4, and his DV (Defensive Value) at -19.8, Rollins at 137.
We also see a similar story when looking at his FSR (Fangraphs definition if you're not familiar, The Fan Scouting Report is a yearly project conducted by Tom Tango that rates players on their defensive ability based on fan observations and voting), where he is significantly worse in every single category.
So the fact that he has terrible range is not the only reason he is looked at as an average/run of the mill defender.
