Well I mean, if you're born in '39 it'll be a challenge to pitch in 2020. But hey idk, maybe he would still be able to throw that 60mph knuckleball nowadays.

I was kidding because he pitched FOREVER in the MLB.
-
Give us a tribute card, cowards.
-
Yeah, it’s about to be January, I don’t care, please give him a tribute card.

He retired when he was 45

I met Phil and his brother Joe when I was really young. Super friendly and class acts. Wish I had learned Phil’s secrets to that pitch

11 all time in WAR for pitchers. 5 Gold Glove awards. 4th all time in innings pitched. 11th in strike outs. 16th in wins. The man is such an underrated Hall of Famer.
2020 takes another all time great

301 wins after his 29th birthday! I promise you that will NEVER happen again!! Both Niekros were class acts. David Letterman used to have them on all the time when he was on NBC. Great guys!!!

And he pitched for some HORRIBLE Braves teams. For example, he won 19 games in 1979, while the entire team won 66. I used to watch those games in the summer with my Grandfather, who was a huge Braves fan, on CNN in Bangor, ME. He'd always say "he doesn't throw the ball hard enough to break a pane of glass"...

And, for those who don’t know, on his 300th win he threw a mix of fastballs, curveballs, screwballs, change ups.......the kitchen sink!!! Didn’t throw a knuckleball until the final hitter in the 9th just to prove he could do it! This was against a first place Blue Jays team that included Jessie Barfield and George Bell. Not bad for a 46 year old man!
