So, MLB The Show 27 without an MLB season for 2027?
-
No secret to anyone here what I think of how SDS has managed their video game MLB The Show for the last several years. It's decidedly negative for many reasons. That said, now that the World Series has ended the 2026 baseball season, it isn't too early to ask the biggest question out there.
What happens with MLB The Show 27? In my opinion, the most likely result is the entire 2027 MLB season will be cancelled due to the lockout that will almost certainly begin when the current player CBA ends at 23:59 on December 1st of this year.
One cannot easily count the number of customers participating at this community forum who have consistently told SDS they have rested far too long on their previously earned laurels. That they have spent the last several years spending woefully inadequate human time and resources on keeping the game engine and the overall game experience as realistic as current video game technology can support. The game has become choked by overly layered code that often operates against itself, producing wildly inaccurate presentations during a game.
Is SDS going to "mail it in" another year for 2027 and release MLB The Show 27 with nothing more than cosmetic changes in how the game functions, relying more on marketing slogans to repackage existing game function into enticing but false promises of new and better function? That's been the trend for too many years. People are noticing, and another year of that approach, combined with the near certain absence of an actual MLB season for 2027, doesn't strike me as an intelligent strategy.

We don't know. Do they still have the MLB license to use all players. If so I assume it will be much like this year minus content based on games played (Topps Now)
They'll just need to come up with more content like Mural and Cityscapes. They could do retro Topps Now cards. More History style missions. Lean on legends more next year
They'll figure it out. Whether the fans would like it is anyone's guess

Under MLB and union rules, the players CANNOT be used in marketing while having no collective agreement. This means MLB The Show will NOT be able to use the players names or likeness for any game released during the period of time that there is no collective agreement.

Excellent point!

@SiberiaTigerCub_PSN when the season was delayed they came out with a game 2 or 3 years ago. They could but if they are separate MLB and MLBPA there could be a loophole.
-
@Dinger_Dan19_PSN I think that game came out in April, after the new CBA was agreed to. The season was only delayed 1 week then.

Tatis was on the cover in 21. Cover athlete and marketing announcements started in early February so during the lockout. Game release was mid April but what I am unsure of is if the delay in release was due to Covid delays and shutdowns during much of 2020 or if it was due to the lockout.

It will be interesting to see. It's gotta be tough trying to plan for next year. Will there be a lockout or not? If so how long will it last? Will it be concluded before the season starts or after?
Also, when it comes to licensing, the list both MLB and The Players Association so who knows how those deals are setup or where they intersect

Will we see MLB the Show '27 full of legends? or are they also banned? or maybe hold open tryouts and get a bunch of average joe's to fill the gaps in the meantime haha i'll suit up. It would seem i'm joking but i'm not haha Imagine the response from gamers across the nation. YOU COULD HAVE A CHANCE to be in MLB the show

The legend players are licensed through the MLBPAA (Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association). I don't know if they are incorporated in the CBA.

They actually tried this before. 2018? 2019? They had a team full of real life streamers. Full likeness and all.

@Jeff7407_PSN pretty cool. as wacky as it sounds why not give back to the gamers. they could also run a full set of historic players. even mid-level guys people never think of.

I imagine a deal will be worked out between SDS, the MLB, and the MLBPA, if it has not already been agreed to; this game was one of the highest-grossing sports games of the year, so there is no way the unions would lose out on millions in revenue. I am not sure if they will charge 70+ dollars with no real season; they may want to do paid DLC for 27 and just drop a massive 10-15 dollar patch for 26.
