SDS - the computer throws way too many balls
-
And when you get to 3-2 which is like every at bat, you expect, ok they are gonna throw me a strike now surely. NOPE, they will almost always just walk you. Has to be by design to eat time, it’s the only thing that makes sense. No one pitches like this

@TheJeweledLotus_PSN there’s a pattern to it sometimes, which makes it arguably more annoying - HoF CPU chases double plays and same-handed matchups to no end whenever first base is open
-
I’ve long said it’s like combining Rick Vaughn and Greg Maddux. Zero control combined with super dots that clip or just miss the corners. 100% unrealistic and super tedious.
This is online play.

This doesnt bother me.
What bothers me is that Rookie/Veteran CPU does the sameI dont believe there is any difference in CPU pitching between the difficulty modes, its just the mechanical changes with pitch speeds and PCI.
Hitting there is more of a difference, but CPU hitting is laughably bad on all modes but maybe legend

So I’m playing the new mini seasons on hof, and it’s such an unneccicary time dump due to the pitchers throwing a 80/20 ball to strike ratio and that’s being generous.
I'm doing the same thing. I don't play on HOF often, but man, the pitchers in this mini-season are wild.

Wait, your telling me I can just put the controller down while batting and win? 80/20 means I would get 4 balls for every 1 strike and I could just walk my way to victory!
In all seriousness, the pitchers dot even on lower difficulties

So I’m playing the new mini seasons on hof, and it’s such an unneccicary time dump due to the pitchers throwing a 80/20 ball to strike ratio and that’s being generous. This is in no way representative of how pitchers pitch in real life or H2H in the game. It’s just ridiculous. It really makes playing the cpu dreadful. If anyone pitched like this in real life their career would be over it’s just walk after walk and maybe one hittable pitch, same w H2H, you would never win. So why is the cpu programmed to throw an obscene amount of balls? The only reason I can think of is to waste your time making sure if you want a hittable pitch you have to sit through a 6 pitch at bat, almost everytime. They also pick people with long windups for the rosters and then take the maximum amount to pitch everytime. SDS, please make playing the cpu less painful. If your trying to artificially inflate playing time your gonna get the opposite as it makes me not want to play the mode ever.
I had the cpu throw 10 straight balls last night it’s infuriating

Playing a wbc miniseason game it was a common card pitcher I was facing few days ago, he walked the bases loaded and then proceeded to walk in a run. The only strikes I saw were fringe edge dotted strikes that I refuse to swing at. If I remembered right he threw 10 in a row outside the zone. I feel common pitchers at any level are by far the worst when it comes to this.

So...I dont really disagree with this post, but people dont ever complain when real humans pitch this way online. Just when cpu does.
Like, good online players dot the corner over and over - to the point where you might see one ball every two innings thats anywhere near center of the zone. They throw plenty of balls too - slider/cutter breaking in on you, breaker low, heat high, etc.
People just accept this with human players and go "well thats strategy - thats how you pitch". When cpu does it, there's outrage. Also, no matter what cpu does - the cpu games go WAY faster and smoother than online games.and also, cpu gives you center cut meatballs WAY more - on any difficulty.
I get that people seem to just want CPU to be a punching bag where they can quickly grind stats....but I dont want that from cpu. I want it to be a good replica of smart play.
-
But it’s not a good replica of smart play, the balls humans throw are competitive for the most part, the CPU will throw 3 balls a foot outside the zone , then dot an edge or corner. I play online ranked a lot and I don’t face anyone who throws that many balls. Maybe in the lower ranks people play that way but I don’t see it. And you don’t see it in the mlb, if someone threw that many balls they would be sent down to AA. How is is smart play to consistently have 3 balls counts and still not throw a strike?
-
This is why ill never understand the absolute refusal by some to play online. Its not like offline doesn't have its major negatives either. Are some of you really going to tell me you would rather play the cpu and watch them throw ball after ball? I think alot of you.. not all of you. Not generalizing everyone..are just scared to lose. Thats the only thing that makes sense to me.
-
@D_e_m_I_s_E_MLBTS this is the way…..
-
I hate playing online and only do when there’s no other way to get a reward I want. Pretty much every ranked game I’ve ever played is like moonshot event - against me. I do enjoy online when I’m matched with someone that doesn’t crush me, but that’s rare. Literally dozens of reasons I prefer offline. I enjoy playing offline and it would be awesome if at least one of the settings included cpu that throws hittable pitches more often. I can appreciate the way the game is, but sometimes, when I play video games, I just want to push the buttons and hit things. Not exercise patience.
-
@rubicante23_PSN I feel like most want the punching bag so they can quickly grind stats. I know I don’t want “grind games” vs cpu to take forever. Now conversely speaking, if you want the challenge, that’s what HOF and legend are for. I feel like that’s the way it should be set up. But it’s not.
-
The thing with online for me is a lot of time I feel like my time is wasted because I am not great at hitting. And when you run into people who are good at hitting it makes it take even longer for you to receive basically no progress towards anything
And yes, its not fun when you are struggling to get hits while your opponent hits everything you throw (NOT cheaters either). And there are times when I face someone who is even worse than me at hitting, and those games arent fun either.
When you get that fabled even match it can be a lot of fun, but for me online is only fun when that happens.
I played online more when progress wasnt so heavily tied to offensive stats. When innings mattered more I could at least chip away at the program. Now Im playing a mode thats only fun when the stars align and barely making progress for it.
The lack of progress is the same reason i dislike Showdown. While I finish them on the first shot most of the time, when you dont it feels like you just wasted 30-45 minutes of your time with nothing to show for it.
-
Yeah not everything needs to be a hair pulling grind. Even the computer on rookie throws 80 percent balls.
One piece of advice for any online player or if you are thinking about playing online. Never play vs the cpu on less than all star difficulty....ever. never get your brain used to lower speeds. One time on rookie can mess your entire game up. This is why online players hate playing offline.
-
@TheJeweledLotus_PSN I agree with you that cpu plays dumb in lots of ways, which is so annoying to me.
Most people dont care - they just want cpu to be punching bag. They dont want challenging play from cpu, just quick stats.
Game companies in all games dont care - they want you online. Thats when people spend - they buy stuff there, because they worry their team isn't as good as others.
So, noone cares - and thats why cpu still plays like its a dumb robot from 2005.
Where's all the new AI? Isn't this exactly what all the new AI tech should be good at? Making a good cpu experience that mimics real human play?
-
I don't care what the rewards are what the grind is. Yeah im ranting right now. It is not worth it to play vs the cpu on anything less than all star. Not gonna mess up my game to grind offline stats. I just wont get the card.
