    They'll be lucky to get 2-3 pitching years out of him, he will be a 70 mill. DH

    If he was 25 I might have,but in 3-5 years he might be half of what he is now, some make it through but a lot drop off mid 30s,some really drop off.
    but hey, with a gamble like this all those Vegas hotel execs salivating over getting these guys to their hotels probably just solved the southwest water crisis

    Not much difference than paying an NFL QB $55 million for 17 games or an NBA player $60 million to play 82 games. Those sports are much more dangerous on the body and while I get that the money isn’t guaranteed I would be willing to bet the Dodgers got insurance on this one.

    I wonder what Al Kaline would say about the contract. When he signed for $100,000 he was appreciative but thought he wasn't worth it.

    He also played at a time when a majority of his colleagues had to work second jobs during the off season.

    Baseball players are entertainers. Tom Cruise gets $70-$100 million per picture. He'll make around $100 million for the new Top Gun movie. Given those numbers, baseball players don't make that much to entertain us.

    He was projecting modesty. All those guys knew they were getting shafted on money but they couldn't do anything about it.

    Al Kaline would probably be so stoked to still be alive that he wouldn't give Ohtani much thought.

    @Blind_Bleeder
    Good point. I find it interesting how athletes' salaries are often displayed for public debate, while the the income of music stars, movie stars, political lobby recipients, corporate CEOs, TV media pundits, etc.... are kept low key. Weird.

    Actually Ohtani will be a 2 million $ DH until he's 39 when he gets paid lol. This contract just gets crazier by the day. Meanwhile the Dodgers can go out and get more players

    But will that hamstring them in 10 years when they start paying 68 million for a player no longer there? Is that still counted as player salary?

    It still counts toward their payroll every year, just like how the Mets are still paying Bobby Banilla years after he retired and it still counts toward their payroll

    Payroll yes, but i am not sure if his deferred money will count against the CBT after he is retired?.... for example I do not think the Reds are being penalized for Griffey's deferred money in regards to their tax...and same for Bonilla and Mets.

    Edit... The deferred salary wil count for next ten years but due to the deferred "present day value" (inflation), the CBT cap hit is lowered:

    I find it crazy that they're allowed to do that to contracts, they should be forced to pay him 70 million dollars just because of the absurd amount of money he's going to be getting, it's too much for 1 player who won't even be pitching this season and will probably end up being a reliever in a couple years which would make him unable to be a 2 way player anymore. He probably won't even be able to be a two way player for the entire 10 year contract, sorry for my rant but I hate him with a passion

    Why? Are you an Angels fan mad that he is leaving or a Toronto fan mad about the misreporting?

    Maybe I just don't pay enough attention but I am baffled at what he could have done to make someone "hate him with a passion."

    No player deserves that kind of money period especially since they will be paying practically nothing for him for the next 10 years and then 68 million for the next X amount of years after that which will very easily put them over the luxury tax and then can't rebuild because they have that money on the books

    But, why do you care so much? Why can’t you be happy for a guy who has worked his [censored] off to become the best he can be? Why do you care how his contract is laid out?

    The Dodgers are making a huge amount of money off this deal (even more now that 68m of Ohtani’s salary is deferred).

    Were you this upset when Griffey Jr. gave up his salary so the Mariners could get better players? (Which really didn’t work, btw).

    There’s no good reason to be upset with Ohtani or the Dodgers over this deal.

    Are you this upset that Tom Cruise is making 100m from his last movie?

    Be happy for Ohtani. He has worked hard. Very hard. And, he is very talented. He deserves what he is worth. And, he is worth (monetarily) whatever a team is willing to pay him.

    @Dolenz
    Ohtani's OB% has increased substantially due to him getting hit by pitch every other game. lol

    Then hate the Dodgers for offering the contract. Was Ohtani supposed to turn it down?
