For those upset about how much his contract is, think of it this way. He gets 70 million a year over 10 years. The Dodgers will rake in an additional 700 million a year in marketing revenue - whether it's from ticket or jersey sales, TV revenue, and who knows what else.

All they need him to do is step on the field in a uniform and they will have their money back.

But there shouldn't be a 700 million contract in this game, it's unnecessary and now everyone will want that kind of money

How does MLB even allow it, the Dodgers are now WELL OVER the luxury tax, this is why we need a salary cap for MLB so that way there is no more stupid contracts like that in this game

They get away with by defering money, it's a scummy move but perfectly legal. The Dodgers can backload this contract much like Bobby Bonilla did with the Mets and the Dodgers can keep signing good players to put around Ohtani. For instance they are still in on Bellinger who will be the next FA to be paid.

This will set the bar for the rest of the offseason, get ready for some outrageous contracts.

Don't forget Trout. They want him too. Why? I have no idea. He hasn't played a full season in how long? His marketing draw isn't even that large.

I don't think that will happen any time soon. But i wonder who the first player to make 1 billion will be, because thats next. I know Ohtani is special and once in a lifetime player but who knows what could happen.

I think he’s worth much more especially when you consider the billions in revenue he generates.

That has me curious how much teams can make per year on player merchandise? The Dodgers already have the best attendance in baseball year after year so how many extra seats can Ohtani's presence sell? Unless of course they use his presence as a reason to raise ticket and concession costs.

There is part of me that says more power to the player that can demand that salary but there is a bigger part of me that says that one player is not worth that much.

And if there is one thing the Mets, Yankees and Padres proved in 2023 it was that spending the most money does not guarantee anything.

@Dolenz Yeah but the Dodgers have proven their ability to make the post season eleven straight years.

For everyone worried about the Dodgers paying the luxury tax. The tax threshold is $237 million. Before Ohtani they had $117 million allocated to payroll. Once his actual contract information is released the number than be adjusted.

It's too much to pay any human to play any sport, but baseball doesn't have a cap, sadly.
Congrats to him. He got that bag.
    Bag? I mean Sack!
It's a bit sickening, because prices only go up in this world. This is another aspect of that.
Mankind has got to know his limitations.

    @Blind_Bleeder
For me the sad thing is that people still go to games. These people have more money than they could ever spend, yet they clearly could care less about their fans.

Anyone who can spend $100 plus for one ticket, $25 plus for parking, $10 for one beer, $8 for a hot dog to cheer for a bunch of entitled millionaires who don't care about the fans is something I just don't understand.

Billionaire owners who demand that the "lowly commoners" finance their playhouse palaces and then pay for the privilege of watching millionaire players play a game in the stadium THEY paid for can bite me.

Entertainment can be expensive, and I do agree with you about ticket prices at the park being out of reach for most families...at least to enjoy on a regular basis. Regardless, suppy and demand drives ticket prices, and the stars drive up demand. The Dodgers will not pay his salary from the gate, but mostly from multi-national marketing and TV revenue.

700 million is too much for 1 player period.

Thats stupid money, the Dodgers have no way out of this contract either.

Thats more then most teams payrolls.

I looked it up and only the Orioles and A's had team payrolls of less than 70 million in 2023. The Pirates and Rays were close.

The luxury cap threshold was probably the FO's biggest concern, which was mitigated by the deferred salary.

You made a great point about their TV contract. They get $250 million annually to be on Fox Sports LA. I don’t think they’re worried about payroll or the luxury tax. The article I read said he deferred most the salary dollars. Let’s see exactly what that means.
