Are you seeing articles making excuses for why the Dodgers, Braves, Mets and Cardinals were eliminated so early? Screaming from the mountaintops that the new playoff structure is unfair?

If you had the choice of playing a 3 game series in New York against a 101 win team and facing the two headed dragon of Degrom and Scherzer while risking elimination or going bowling and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel what would you choose?

Stop making excuses. Your team lost. My team lost. The other teams won. The new playoff structure isn't designed to destroy the Dodgers, maybe work on your baseball game and not on your bowling or at least stop making excuses.

    And get off my lawn.

You say get off my lawn but it's mostly the baseball old heads that are saying these sorts of things tbh. People love the NFL playoffs and March Madness because the better team doesn't always win. As soon as it happens to the biggest teams in baseball it's an abomination though apparently lol

It is because baseball is a 162-game season. That is almost 10 times more games than football, more than twice as many as basketball and hockey. Baseball season is too long. For the season to be that long, why is the best of 5 determining who goes to the ALCS/NLCS? Play two less regular season games and 2 more games in the ALDS/NLDS. I am not a homer of any teams in the playoffs, but I am a fan of a hard floor and a hard cap in sports. Could you imagine what the NFL would look like if there wasn't a cap?

See, this is not a bad solution. I understand wanting a longer series and as much as I love the baseball season, I wouldn't mind a few less regular season games and a few more playoffs.

You are 100% correct here. Upsets are fun. But the Dodgers and Braves didn't get screwed, they just didn't win. It happens. Their regular season accomplishment allowed them to skip a round. That's huge. What more can we do for them short of just placing them in the NLCS automatically and eliminating the rest of the playoffs?

Remember when the NBA 1st round was best of 5? The league changed it so the top teams wouldn't be eliminated early. That's what happened here. Top teams left early.
I think there are too many playoff teams in MLB, but this format kept teams in it very late. That's actually good for the league and fanbases.
I don't think there's a way to make everyone happy, so there's no need to get upset over things we can't control. Just roll with it and enjoy the games.

I think Barkley said “the best team should always win the best of 7 but anything can happen in the best of 5.”

The funny thing about these whiny articles, is you're never going to find a team in any league/any sport that would say, "No, we don't want a bye".

Not that I'm necessarily against this, but if the Dodgers or Mets had lost in a best of 7, there would still be a complaint.

Yep and if you take the same teams and run them through 10 of the same types of series, they probably win the majority. Playoffs are a crapshoot.

My thoughts too. The regular season will never $horten but have 162 game season then a 3 or 5 game series? No matter how many teams make the playoffs 7 game series should be the standard.

Having a 3 game playoff series in baseball would be roughly like having NFL teams play 1 quarter of football to determine who advances to the next round. In the NBA it would be like playing a game and a half in the first round.

But it's better than a 1 game do or die right?

I would prefer 7 game series always, I absolutelyagree with your take on it being like a quarter of football etc. But there are so many critics acting like the bye hurt their team and If that's the case, give the top two teams their choice....bye or play first round....I bet they pick bye everytime. I know momentum and rhythm are huge in baseball, but I can't imagine a manager would ever prefer to play the extra series, burning their rotation risking elimination just to get in a rhythm.

I guess I am trying to say, it's certainly not perfect but it's an improvement or at the very least, it's not worse than what we had.

I think it’s better than the one game playoff. The Seattle Toronto series was fun to watch (except for players getting hurt).

I wasn’t thrilled about the M’s having to play a best of three in Toronto, because imo, the shorter series favoured the Jays.

That said, it ended up being moot.

Well, I won't say the new system is unfair, but it is a joke. You play a 162 game season to eliminate just under half the league. The post season now extends to [censored] near Thanksgiving. Instead of expanding it they need to be contracting it. I would prefer that if they want to keep three divisions the team with the best record advances to the LCS and home field advantage and the other two division winners play a best of 3. The LCS would be a best of 5 and the championship series remain at best of 7 with the team with the best record having home field advantage.

I do wonder if they expand to 32 teams will they go to 4 divisions of 4 teams each in each league? Or what other alternative do they go with?

I really hope that they don't add more teams. There's far too many bad teams already. The talent has been thinned enough.

They don't care one bit about that, it's all about how much money they could possibly make.

My team is playing for the NLCS and I think it's an absolute joke.
The Phillies made it by beating up on horrible teams.
The Mets and Braves destroyed them all year, and they're out.

We "old heads" don't like the new format because it turns baseball into hockey-- show up for the now meaningless regular season, play so-so baseball and you're in.

It's a cash grab disguised as inclusion.

Baseball was a sport of attrition. The teams that made the post season were elite.
I'm loving that the 5 and 6 seeds are playing for the NL Title.
