The Cards desperately need a new legend! I love the Wiz, but his cards just don’t play in this game. Never have.
Don't the Cards usually have a lot of legends? Gibson, Musial, Brock, Sutter, sometimes Keith Hernandez, sometimes Jim Edmonds... is Lee Smith still in the game? I know we lost Hornsby and I guess also Enos Slaughter. But I do really hope that Ted Simmons is in the game next year. SDS needs to get crackin' on the catcher legends (Yogi, Camp, Simmons, FISK!, Gibson, Munson, Cochrane, etc)
Never mind -- I just looked up Lee Smith and he only played in St Louis for 4 years, so I guess that wouldn't be a good fit for Legends of the Franchise. For some reason I really thought he spent the first half of his career with the Cubs and the second half with the Cards. Weird.
This game NEEDS Ted Simmons!
Amen!! Especially with us losing Molina after this year.
I am huge Ozzie fan but as mentioned he doesn't hit well enough in this game. I'd be happy with 50 or 60 power. Just enough to get it over the infield and gap the outfields now and then.
That said, Masyn Winn has been pretty good for me but my heart would rather use Ozzie.
Who do you think the majority of Cards fans would say is your franchise's All-Time greatest catcher? It's got to be Yadi, right? But I feel like there's a good case for Simmons, too. He was before my time, so I'm not as familiar with him as I am with Molina. Either way, they're both all-time greats.
Curious what other Cards fans @Ericulous1_PSN might say, too.
Oh without a doubt almost every Cardinal Fan would say Molina. But Molina is retiring after this year and as far as I know The Show never, or at least almost never obtains rights for newly retired players for years afterwards, maybe even until they are eligible for HOF ballot.
So next year we may be faced with Andrew Knizner, Ivan Herrera or somebody like Joe Torre who only caught 107 games for the Cardinals and was replaced by Ted Simmons. Simmons had the starting position for a Decade. Oh, and he is a Hall of Famer and a switch hitter to boot.
As an added bonus he could also be used for the Brewers and Braves, the two teams he was with after the cardinals.
I hope SDS breaks that tradition and thinks about getting the rights to recently retired stars right away (Pujols, Molina, and Ichiro are three who come to mind immediately). There are never enough good catchers in this game, and Molina usually has a really solid SS or Awards or whatever by the end of the year. Losing him will be a bummer.
I really wanted to make it out to St Louis to see a Cardinals game this summer but I couldn't find a weekend that worked. I was hoping to see Molina before he retires. And Goldy is one of my favorite active players, so it would be cool to see him. I even thought about flying out to either Pittsburgh or Cincinnati to see the Cardinals on the road, but when I started looking at the cost of flights and hotels and tickets and rental cars, I decided just to stay home lol.

I only live two hours away and seriously thought about going to yesterdays game to See Wainwright/Molina break the record, but decided against it. By the time I looked any decent tickets were expensive. Add in the tank of gas, parking, food and beverage and I found it hard to justify hundreds of dollars for 1 person.

Sorry fellas my heart is with Tim McCarver......ok I couldn't even finish that sentence. Absolutely Molina. He won me over in 2006 with his Game 7 Home run against the Mets. Then he became a legend.

Ted Simmons was a much better hitter than Yadi but Yadi far exceeded him on defense and handling pitchers.

Sounds about right. I was a catcher back in my day so I will always have a soft spot for backstops. In my very biased opinion, he’s a no-doubt first ballot hall of famer just for his defense alone. Hopefully the voters agree in 5 years.
We have been spoiled for the last decade with Posey and Molina. Two all-time greats playing at the same time! Pretty cool to think about. But there are SO many catching prospects I’m excited about! Could be a new golden age for catchers on the horizon!

Lol, when I was scrolling through this thread and got to the Tim McCarver joke, i knew who wrote this post without even having to check. Well played.
And I must have forgotten all about that HR! I’ll have to look for it on YouTube. I don’t even remember the 2006 postseason at all, actually. If I recall correctly, the white Sox had a pretty decent season but missed the playoffs. But I didn’t care — they won it all in 05 so I was still riding high. If you’re a Sox fan you have to be like a camel with water — store it up while you can because it may not come around again for a looooong time.

It was the game where Endy Chavez made that over the wall catch of a would be Scott Rolen HR and doubled off Jim Edmonds. It was tied 1-1 in the 9th and Molina hit a 2 Run HR. The game ended with Waino throwing a huge hammer that caught Beltran looking. More than likely that's when Tim McCarver exclaimed "Pardon...it's the Cardinals who win as they had more points."

Although his time with the Cards was short, Lee usually gets a card for STL cuz it was his best season. Yes Ted Simmons would be awesome!
