There may be a slight catch in the deal, Hosmer has yet to wave his no trade clause.....

Good point. Hosmer about to get paid! Boras represents Hosmer, Soto and Bell. Hosmer is gonna get a nice cut from somewhere

Doubtful, Hosmer is completely washed up. I'm sure he'll get a 1 or 2 year deal but his contract with the Padres was a total Albatros and part of the reason they couldn't land Scherzer or anyone else last year is because nobody wanted Hosmer with that contract.

I get what you're saying about the rental but he's a rental for 3 playoffs cycles. Plus the Pads have been rebuilding now for 25 years (really more like their entire history). They needed this. If this gets them to a world series and somehow they win. SD can go the rest of eternity boasting 1 championship or at least survive another few decades on a WS appearance.

Ps: I am a San Diegan born and raised. My parents are Cards fans from St. Louis and they are my first love but I know of which I speak. This isn't Boston or LA. 1 professional Championship (of which they have 0) and the Pads are set for years.

I wouldn’t say Hosmer is completely washed up. I think he’s batting .270 something with 8 home runs this season. Sometimes stats don’t tell the whole story. If you make contact and advance a runner that helps the team. He’s definitely not an all star anymore but he’s not bottom tier.

I think he’s good. I know a lot of other guys playing worse plus he was in a trade package for Juan Soto. Can’t be too washed up.

He has the same home runs, better average and higher Ops than Cedric Mullins. I think we all agree Cedric isn’t terrible.

You're probably right, but I also think some of us (especially me) overrate a guy's real life value because of how much we love them in The Show.

Thank god Mullins had a high peak that allows for cards like he's gotten this year. My favorite swing in the game, but in real life has been pretty poor this year.

Yeah I agree. I love Cedric in The Show. Incredible swing. I still think he’s a pretty good ball player outside the game too. As for Hosmer I hate his cards in game. Lol His gold glove card last year was ok but that’s about it.

He's definitely not awful. I guess I'm saying that for the money he's getting paid he is not even close to meeting expectations. He received an 8 year $144 million dollar deal and it's been a bad contract the whole time. He is perhaps the laziest 1B I've seen in recent memory. Seriously just watch Padres lowlight videos of him not even looking at the ball and making mental mistakes. Add his extremely high ground ball rate and he just doesn't provide much value.

And look at his fwar from Fangraphs. While that poster could have been a little less hostile. Hosmer' fWAR since he joined the Padres.

    2018: -0.5
    2019: -0.9
    2020: 0.7
    2021: 0.6
    2022: 0.4

He has a 10.2 fWAR for his entire career.

    So no, he's not great.

Yeah he’s not as good as he used to be and highly overpaid from his production right now. That being said he’s a 4x gold glove winner,Silver slugger award winner, all star game MVP and World Series champion so I can see why the Padres wanted to pay him.

All good points. I think Pads fans were excited for the deal when they signed him for all the reasons you just mentioned . Just odd that he stopped performing when he got there. And yeah, Hader, Soto, Bell and Drury. What a trade deadline.

They gave up a ton for a possible rental? If Soto doesn't sign there this could be one of the worst deals ever. And if he does 1 billion tied up on 3 guys? Uhg

They have Soto for at least 2 more years under control. Not a rental.

They really made out good with the players they got for who they got rid of. That’s gonna be a scary team to face moving forward. When Jake Cronenworth is maybe your 5th best hitter that’s pretty crazy. Soto,Tatis,Bell, and Machado are elite hitters. Bell might not be considered elite but how do you pitch around hitters with that team?

So the big hang up for a lot of teams looking at Whit Merrifield was his vaccination status. I think the Blue Jays got him just to be silly. I would imagine even if he gets the vaccination he won't be eligible to play in Toronto for at least a month.

Bro he's been one of the worst players in the entire league the last three years. Every other AB is a groundout to second and he is the laziest defender I have ever seen. Second highest groundball rate in the league last year and no willingness to improve. He's hated by every actual Padre fan. Only the casuals and old people that don't watch the games try and convince people he is good. 5 years in SD and only 0.3 fWAR. He was atrocious

I think you meant his WAR is 1.3 this year. Hosmer has never been a power hitter but he has a lifetime batting average over .270. You saying he’s one of the worst players in the league is a stretch. Lol Also you saying that only old people and casuals try to defend him is a comical. I stated what Hosmer brings to the table and he’s far from bottom tier. In the top 50 In the league in batting average and probably close in hits. He’s on pace to have a better year than he has the past few years. I’m a huge baseball fan. Played baseball for a long time and even played ball in college. Chill

He had a 0.4 fWAR this year and in his time in SD he totaled 0.3 fWAR go look on fangraphs. He had two negatives WAR seasons with us. Between his terrible offense, defense, baserunning, and lack of motivation he was quite literally one of the worst players in the league. There's a reason we payed boston 44 million to have him. There's a reason no team in baseball wanted him. If there's anything he brings to the table it doesnt matter in the modern game because he cant hit the ball in the air. Batting average is a useless stat. That's like you trying to tell me he's better than soto because he has a higher batting average. First baseman that cant slug. Not to mention he was a locker room c*ncer. Some leader he was that just so happened to be at the center of multiple late season collapses. I've played baseball since I was a child just like many other people and yes I played at a small college too its not that impressive of a feat. Doesnt change the fact that it takes a very mediocre IQ score to see how detrimental he was to the team. Man did you not see how happy and energized the team played yesterday?? He is absolute bottom tier and there's no argument for the guy hes a loser.

“He had two negatives WAR seasons with us.” Now it makes sense why you’re so salty about him not playing up to his expectations. You’re a Padres fan and he didn’t play up to his standard for “your” team.
