It was indeed a comedic response.
Ultimately, there are just too many variables to offer an accurate indictment on the reasoning as we are all humans and have our own reasons. Logic to you is not logic for others. Maybe they’ve been in a 1 stub bid war with people before and are just tired of that exercise. Maybe they like rounding up to the next 1,000.
Maybe they do believe it will sell faster; one potential seller will see a 1 stub difference and say that’s not worth it, but 1,000 above may be enough for that seller.
Same consideration goes for selling. Put your bid/buy in at a value you want, be patient, and it’ll go. Don’t let actions of other change your approach.

I like the ones that but sell orders that end in a 5, like 125 at 385. I just plug mine in for one stub less at 384 BUT get what they would because they don't know how to round up on the tax.

There are just so many variables to all of this and this year the market has been a bit different to say the least. I know for me personally that it is easier to watch people bump me one direction or the other when I am flipping, but if it is a card I am buying to use it can get old fast. I don’t always want to sit around and wait or bump back up one stub…I don’t always need the stubs I have and if it saves me time, it can be well worth it.

People realize, I thought, that if a buy order is placed for Player X for 10,000 stubs, you will not get them any faster by bidding 11,000 stubs! Simply bid 10,001 to become the top bidder! Just seems to me that we, as players, can help each other out by NOT over-bidding on something! Within a matter of minutes, a players value goes from 10,000 to way higher than it should because of what I presume to be pretty ignorant players over-bidding thinking they’ll get the card faster or something??
I would imagine the same theory applies to selling as well!!

Yep. Not everyone plays the market.
I have a wife and a child and [censored] to do, so when I do get the chance to sit and play for 30 minutes and there's a card I want at that moment, I will pay more for that card so I can have and use it immediately. And yes, it does get me the card faster because someone is always looking for a chance to flip.

That's a different way of thinking about it. I always figured it was the morons that use those websites that closed gaps like that

That's nothing, look at the morons who buy a pack for 35k or 25k and they sell it for 10k below what the pack cost. That one always has me scratchin my head.

When the buy now is 270 and the sell now is 140 it is much easier to be a donkey's but by placing 75 orders at 195.

For the record… I could’ve clarified… I don’t care about flipping for a measly few hundred stubs… FOR EXAMPLE… A. Judge went from 110k to 97k within approximately 30 bids… could very easily sell for approximately 109,970 had EVERYONE simply dropped the sell price by 1 stub…! Guarantee there isn’t one player out there “hawking” the market waiting for that one guy/gal to drop a sell price by 2k… same player would have bought them for the additional stubs… for every player squeezing by with just enough stubs to purchase the card they want (looking for that exuberant drop in price) there are the same amount of players with plenty of stubs that will snatch them up from you either way (whether you’re dropping by 1 stub or 1k)!
Just frustrating cause when you finally get a good card that you can actually make a worthwhile profit on… every knob out there just ruins that “worthy” gap!
Don’t let me fool anyone… I’m not inexperienced in this game and grind with the best of ‘em (not saying I play well), but have played long enough and am smart enough too see WE THE PLAYERS can control the marketplace if everyone adopted this philosophy…! Cards will still move, in my opinion…

In response to the OP .... The only thing that makes sense in situations where someone bids 500 to 1,000 stubs higher within the Sell Now Bids are those that are seeking to buy that card & not to actually flip it. I actually did this today. I needed desperately atleast an other 90+ Lefty SP to help me compete better with this Event. I chose to go with Prime Al Leiter & I bid 1,000 stubs higher in the Sell Now listing to ward away others from out bidding me long enough to get it. Most times the smart Market players will not out bid it when that happens because they know it just kills any profit on the card to flip. So they rather wait until that other order gets forefilled so it can get back under 1,000 stubs. Even with me bidding 1,000 more in Sell Now, I still paid 1,000 less than the Buy Now & it let me land that card within 3 minutes.
So in cases like that. Those are really people that are after the card to either play or complete a collection. They are willing to pay considerably more in Sell Now for the card, but still be considerably under the Buy Now as well.

If you were selling the card, would you rather sell it at 11K or 10001? That's why people do it. Like @TonyTheTiger2k16 said. Those people are looking to buy the card quickly at a price they're willing to spend that isn't quite the buy now price. Now, when the buy now price is 12K and someone puts up an order for 11K, that's just dumb...the margin isn't there now for someone to Sell Now to you. You're pretty much hoping someone either doesn't care about the margin or not gonna take the time to list it and just sell now to save time
