I've been pretty silent on this but I'll give some opinions now. As a person whose job it has been for over 25 years to manage, store code for and debug data, here's my take...
SDS did the right thing by banning innocents inadvertantly. Every minute these stubs and activity is out there, it becomes harder to unravel and causes more harm to the market. This year, the market has been more stable than ever. People haven't been making millions flipping. That says it all.
SDS has the data to back up ANY claim of innocence. If you are in fact innocent, send in your ticket. Be polite. Cite some dates and transactions. It will only help expedite.
Like many other "veterans" of this community, it's not "our" population affected by this. Why? We know better man. Simple, and factual statement. We've seen shady stuff over the years and know that you either buy stubs via the appropriate parties, or earn them through the game.
Streamers advertising 3rd party stub sellers and people thinking those sales are legit, I don't have sympathy for. Those same streamers are likely getting kick back from those 3rd party sellers.
I'm sure there are innocent people that have been banned. I get it. Innocent before proven guilty works with laws, but not private companies in an online virtual environment that you agree to use under those terms, everytime you log in.
Terrific. I work in IT as well. You are clueless when it comes to how competent SDS/EA/insert big company is at investigating these things. I was banned by EA and it took multiple weeks for those idiots to resolve the issue. Giving people a 24 hour ban would be fine, but EVERYONE that got that ban is still banned for a full year now.
Let's be honest here. The MLB community is a joke size wise compared to the other big sports games. Nobody cares about the "grizzled vets" who have no sympathy for anything.
LOL wut?
Are you thinking that SDS doesn't have metadata on every market transaction performed since it launched this year?
Data is being sent and written to DB2 storage tables everytime you buy and sell cards, whenever you complete a game and/or are granted XP in any form.
I'm not going to get into a keyboard battle with a stranger over my general industry knowledge and how data interacts with a console, web, phone, computer etc interface. I managed data for over 15 years in financial services and have helped launch products for Strat-o-matic. Coupled with testing I've done for legacy Sony Online Entertainment products (predecessor to SDS) I kinda know how stuff works.
You fail to mention the fact that there's no way that SDS has people digging through all of this and making coherent decisions until they are forced to. They have the metadata at their disposal but I'll bet anything you want that they are so undermanned that they don't have time to do anything with it.
Well I'll bite...
Let's say they have half of one head count dedicated to data mining. Guess what? People got banned due to the data. Doesn't take more than an hour, some API's, export and filter in excel.
TBH, more bad actors got banned than legit mistakes. Also, as many "vets" have said here and other places, they didn't get the ban hammer. Some even placed legit transactions during the period in question when stuff was being manipulated.
So what was your point again besides attempting to be confrontational?
You still have no idea what I'm talking about. People were BANNED from a game they paid real money for and for no reason. You thinking you are an IT whiz is hilarious and very indicative of old school IT guys tbh lol
Data says there was a reason. That's why they did it.
Every finite transaction, financial services, online game, leveling up, obtain a piece of loot etc, has a time stamped indicator. It's what allows any company to perform rollbacks. It's the same metadata type of literal line data for a stock trade, completing a mission, swiping your credit card at Starbucks and having your bank pay them, all while Visa takes their cut.
SDS performed their research, identified the start and end period of the transactions they were looking for, added some conditions, and handed out the bans. Processing of this is pretty simple. Sorry that people can't see it.
Did innocent people get banned? Yeah. Absolutely. To say there was no reason is incorrect. The reason is that time stamp and condition. Individuals affected should contact SDS. If SDS tells them to take a walk, that's too bad. File a claim with your credit card, and get a refund for buying the game.
I'm not saying anything about right or wrong. I'm merely trying to explain how the process likely went down.
Code, algorithm, data storage etc is all way more complicated than it was even 5 years ago, nevermind 10 when I did it every day. Yes, I'm old school. I learned from even older school folks.
Everybody is different. Some people think and speak in multiple languages. Some people are excellent at mechanical things with their hands. Some are athletes with drive, natural talent and ability that others don't always understand. Some people think critically about how a process was performed and attempt to apply their experiences in an effort to explain, troubleshoot or diagnose what happens.
I understand how SDS likely went about this. I'm trying to explain it on a forum. Sorry that you don't like my explanation or agree with it.
Want to know who to blame if an innocent person was banned? Blame the bad actors and not the company. Their house, their rules. Don't agree? Pick up the ball and go home.
edit
There's an MLB discord out there with a market bot. Go blame that group for alerting people to fluctuating prices from bad actors and inviting people to take advantage.

I sent a ticket asking for a 2nd chance. Got a response but it’s not happening. Think I’ll go back to 21. Come back next year if things get better with the game itself.
Maybe it's not that big a deal but if I were you I'd probably retire the name "GlitchMagic". It doesn't exactly give off the vibe of an honest and fair player.

Don't read into the user names too deep. I'm certainly not a homeless person that rides trains and carries my belongings on a stick.
This person admitted to the error and has open remorse. It's very commendable. There's a lot of credibility in most of what he writes.
I wish that he wasn't banned for a year, but as others have pointed out, there's other ways to get back in the game. Yeah, it will cost you another copy of the game, but it's early enough in the year to catch up.

Interesting conversations that seem to break down into two camps regarding the bans.
-
Those who will believe the stories of internet strangers because it fits their own narrative that SDS is evil or incompetent.
-
Those who are suspicious of the stories that internet strangers post on forums and believe that there is more to the stories than they are telling us.
We can all argue until we are blue in the face and it will make no difference because at the end of the day none of us will have all of the data that we would need to come to an informed conclusion.

People that bought stubs from a third party, are the bad actors here. The third party seller has to buy a card, listed by user X and perform those transactions multiple times to obtain their "purchased" stubs. Thus the timestamp on those transactions. When the same buyer and seller hit numerous transactions, that's the evidence.
Working the market is fine. Coding an extension, or adding a discord bot is next level though and not how the game was designed to be used from a market perspective. That's how "innocent" people were tagged. They see stuff happening in discord or via their extension, and jump right in to capitalize. Not attempting to get a card they want bat a price, but solely for churning their stub pile.
Free country. Their right to do that. SDS even provides API to developers for card displays and market prices, albeit on a delay from the consoles themselves. I use The Show app frequently, as I work the market a few times a day. I don't use a discord bot or a chrome or other browser extension to alert me though.
In general, if something looks too good to be true, it often is. Unfortunately for a few people, they got in the way of third party but/sell transactions.

I believe it was you that I called an SDS simp and that is as accurate as I can describe you. Sad. Your problem with people working the market is very sad as well tbh. "Bad actors" fluctuating prices? Explain what you mean there and I hope you mean stub buyers/sellers only.
And simp? Whatever dude. Call me whatever you want. Your opinion of me is not something I stress over.
Anyone who routinely uses "simp" unironically and includes it as part of their regularly vocabulary is probably someone not worth engaging with. I would just ignore him. He's not worth your time.

I wish that he wasn't banned for a year, but as others have pointed out, there's other ways to get back in the game. Yeah, it will cost you another copy of the game, but it's early enough in the year to catch up.
I don't, I was being serious. As I said it may not make a difference but with a name like that it MIGHT give SDS folks more cause to investigate anything he does.

You really think that when companies do mass bans that there is NOBODY who was wrongfully banned? Sure, I'm the "weird internet stranger"

I went ahead and submitted a ticket with a screen shot of the pack I pulled Trout from dated 4/18/22.... so now I guess waiting is all I can do.
This is probabally the way to go if you did nothing wrong, they investigate and solve it. But people who knew they were scamming probabally won't submit ticket b/c it will be evidence against them.
Due to how much the market was affected they prolly just banned all accts that had activity with open mind to those who did nothing wrong. But they had to do something because of how big of an impact it had, until they get to the source.
I'm not sure all factors in this are but if you are innocent the truth will out.
Sorry but you are absolutely dead wrong. They should NOT be banning accounts that had "activity" related to the impacted cards. If it made such a huge impact then why is Mike Trout more expensive right now than a week ago? It wasn't a huge deal in the scheme of things and the problem originated because they chose to put the game on the stupid Switch and somebody found a way to get free unlimited stubs and bought up all the cards.
People having 3-4 times the amount of stubs they should have absolutely has an impact. On the surface there is no way to tell if its accidental or if the guy with infinite stubs gave people a heads up first. Don't get me wrong, there were probably quite a few otherwise innocent people that got hit with bans, but a true innocent person partaking in this fiasco would be mostly coincidence. Like they pulled the card in that time frame or just happened to look at the price then. It's not like the prices were like that all day. It was several 10 minute windows throughout the day. The vast majority of participants knew what they were getting into.
SDS left a glitch out there and it got exploited. It boils down to their responsibility and banning people that bought cards cheaper than usual on the market fair and square is such a joke and illegal. It is NOT our responsibility to know the EXACT market value of cards that SDS puts in their game and on their localized market.
If you got caught in the crossfire then send a ticket with proof of buy/sells/pack pulls etc. some innocent people did get banned, I won't argue with you on that. I've just seen a lot of comments and posts in this community that thought they didn't do anything wrong but bought stubs 3rd party. They should be able to tell the innocent from the guilty pretty easily. It's easier to ban everyone involved and fix it later than potentially miss the worst offenders
Are you listening to yourself? Its better to BAN innocent parties than doing a legitimate investigation and banning those responsible for the actual glitch? Why do you hate the community so much? I didn't get caught up in this and have never bought stubs because I have time wfh to flip cards. You simping to SDS about banning innocent people is so nuts.
Am I Simping for SDS or I don't trust this community to tell the truth about their actions? I've yet to see a member of this community thats been around a while and know is legit get banned. I've been apart of this community for a long time. The majority of the bans were handed out to madden kids who bought stubs or were trying to cheat the system. If wanting this community to play by the rules is simping for SDS you can certainly have that opinion, but its wrong. Anyone cheating the market is screwing over good people that make stubs on the market the right way just as much as it hurts SDS
Hello good sir. I was banned and its legit!

If the name is permitted to be selected, SDS must remain unbiased. Our fellow forum users though, always read into it and pass judgement.
Look. I've done some nasty battles with some folks here. I'll even jump on a limb and tag @raesONE_PSN as someone who used to exchange salvos with me. When both sides take a breath and walk a minute in the others shoes, cooler heads prevail and you actually see that you can disagree, but RESPECT each other. Common ground for us these days is humor and appreciation for our outside expertise.
Passing judgement on people for a user name, or a difference of opinions is bad m'kay. We all make mistakes and bad choices. It's up to us to just try and be better people.
I'm not directing this at you @NCStateHokie_PSN . Just making a broad general statement since this thread has a good amount of followers right now.
P.S. State sucks. Tarheels FTW. I actually saw Jordan play live at MSG when he was a student there. They played against Iona in some weekend thing. Saw Mullen at St John's that day as well. It's really the only reason I enjoy watching NC hoops.

I appreciate that. Yeah it’s just a name. Man I stink at this game but I’m a fair player. I got the name as a joke to Fitz Magic the QB. I bought stubs. I had nothing to do with hacking the market lol. I’m no hacker or anything like that.
I’m trying to figure out my next move. But rebuying the game ain’t happening. Like I’ve said previously. I think I’ll ride it out on mlb 21 till the next one comes out. Next year I’ll know what not to do. Hopefully I’m not banned on the new game next year at time of release.
Bright side now is instead of making excuses to friends on why I can’t get together on the weekends because I’m grinding the show. I guess I will be able to partake! -
