Is Ohtani the first pitcher, Angel, and Asian player on the cover? What a great decision to put him there. The dudes a class act. Humble guy. He gave his all-star bonus to the staff at Angel stadium if you didn't hear that.

First pitcher on the standard US cover. Canadian and international covers have featured pitchers.

Prior to MLB The Show, Sony's baseball titles were simply MLB [Insert year] by 989 Studios. That franchise lasted 9 years and featured 2 Angels (Mo Vaughan and Vladimir Guerrero).

There have been Asians on international covers but not the main cover as far as I know.

Since I am looking this up.. For MLB The Show these teams have had covers

Boston Red Sox x 3 (Ortiz, Pedroia, Gonzalez)
Phillies x 2 (Ryan Howard and Harper)
    Mets (David Wright)
    Twins (Joe Mauer)
    Pirates (McCutcheon)
    Tigers (Cabrera)
    Dodgers (Puig)
    Blue Jays (Donaldson)
    Mariners (Griffey)
    Yankees (Judge)
    Cubs (Baez)
    Padres (Tatis Jr)
    Angels (Ohtani)

Shockingly enough neither Trout or Pujols have ever graced the cover in spite of 5 MVP awards between them in that time.

I think we can agree that the biggest mistake cover was Puig.

I don't think Puig was a mistake. He wasn't the best player to grace the cover, but he was an exciting player at the time. And the hitting/pitching engine for MLB 15-17 was better than it is today.

How would that have been possible when Griffey was on the cover in 17 but hasn’t played since 2010?

They have not used an actual league MVP on the cover since The Show 16 when Donaldson was on the cover after he won the 2015 MVP.
