When you create a theme team for a club..
-
I only use the actual team cards. Tigers team is pretty decent, though the bullpen is only 2 good cards deep.
Second favorite team is the Reds and they have a pretty beefy team this year, though I am missing Chapman.
-
Only requirement for me is their card has to be on that team.
-
I only use cards that are Braves for my theme team. It hurts this year with the good Glavine, Maddux and Justice cards not being Braves.
-
Gotta be actually wearing the team's uniform on the card. Bugs me otherwise.
-
They all have to have high socks or stirrups for me

I was having a discussion with a friend about this and I’m interested to see what the community uses for theme team parameters. We are talking team based, not state, country, etc.
Do you put in prospects that never played for the big club but have been drafted by them?
Do you require players to have X amount of years with the team?
Do you try to balance with lefty and righty or aim for whatever’s best?
Do you go for primary position or elect to have players play in secondary or out of position?
It will be interesting to see people’s answers and thought processes behind team building!
Depends what cards are available really, for my jays theme team in ‘19 i had rickey, vizquel, frank thomas and granderson in the team just because they were short on players that spent 5+ years with the team.

I will build a braves team with all three of those guys on it for you
-
I like to use any player that has played for that team and then equip them with the teams uniform if the team is light on cards like the Padres, but for a team like the Cardinals or the White Sox who have many options I'll use only cards in that uniform.
-
For my all men's team, I just used all the best male players.

a: sometimes. i usually prefer to have somebody that is an active or former major leaguer, but if its a really good future stars card at a position without a lot of depth ill include them. i also want them to still be in the teams farm system. like no way id use josiah gray on a dodgers theme team now that he got traded away
b: i dont have a specific years played requirement. i look at it more on a case by case basis. like for example, kenny lofton would never make a dodgers theme team cause he had one year played and it was at the end of his career. like nobody thinks of kenny lofton as a dodger. i would use scherzer cause he's actively on the team though despite it being only a short time (so far at least). same with like gary sheffield, he played long enough and well enough that even though that's not the team on his card or who he's most known for playing for, i dont think anybody would be surprised to see him on a theme team of theirs. that being said, if i had to pick between starting duke snider/gary sheffield, im picking duke 100% of the time because he is an iconic dodger and the game ratings are comparable
whatever's best. its a combination of getting my favorite players for that team on it and also fielding a quality lineup
d: i prefer to play them at their original position, but ill move them out of position if its to a spot that they played for the team occasionally and it helps fill the roster up. like some teams have a lot of good and iconic players that all played the same position so if you can move them around to make the roster better and more representative of the team id go for it
tl;dr its complicated and id just go with what feels right to you

Like many others here it seems I only add players who are Cardinal players on their cards. Current lineup.
Lou Brock - LF
Harrison Bader (POTM) - CF
Stan Musial - RF
Albert Pujols - 1B
Nolan Arrenado - 3B (the only live card in the starting lineup)
Joe Torre - C
Tommy Edman - 2b (flashback Monthly award)
Ozzie Smith - SSFirst off the bench Lars Nootbaar against righties and Tyler O'Neill against lefties.
Waiting/Hoping for better Pujols, Arenado and Molina cards.

My mind will only let me if they are wearing the White Sox jersey. I can’t help it
-
I use any player that ever played otherwise u don't have a chance in ranked

They have the best options for a team in my opinion this year. Having 3 ASG pitchers was super helpful and the Field of Dreams, Topps and Monthly options are a big reason.
Someone asked in another thread who had the best all around team using only players in that uniform and I feel like it's White Sox hands down.
Frank Thomas Award
Minnie Minoso Sig
Paul Konerko Prime
Carlos Rodon ASG
Liam Hendricks ASG
Lance Lynn ASG
Lucas Giolito Milestone
Garret Crochet FS
Tim Anderson Topps
Yasmani Grandal Topps
Luis Robert Monthly
Jose Abreu Monthly
Adam Dunn Milestone
Kenny Lofton Milestone
Andrew Vaughn FSPlus Eloy Jimemez Award, Michael Kopech FS, Yoan Moncada FS, Craig Kimbrel LS
I'm sure there are more in missing.
-
I don't care about the card being in said teams uniform, they just had to play for that team at some point. Bullpens are far to shallow without having Lee Smith or Goose, who played for over half the league
-
If they played even a single inning for the team, then they can be part of it.
Joe Nathan only pitched exactly 2.0 innings with the Cubs, but he’s still going in the bullpen.

Yea man we are stacked this year. I had to rock gold Thome at first for a bit cause we were so righty heavy. Dunn was a life saver

I do a Phillies squad, Indians squad, and a mixture of both.

I usually try to do the same with my Braves team but I cant leave Madx and Glavine off. They are Braves legends thru and thru. Still salty they arent braves cards this year. I wish they'd make some sort of Sheffield Braves card too, he was one of my favorite Braves ever even tho he wasnt there too long. Doesnt have to be a 99 Braves sheffy, just gimme like a veteran card or something

For my Reds team build, I only use cards that are actual Reds cards
The lineup is actually nice right now:
99 Joe Morgan 2B
99 Larkin SS
99 Votto 1B
99 Eric Davis CF
98 Castellanos LF
97 Naquin RF
92 Tyler Stephenson or Bench if you prefer C
96? Topps now Moustakas 3BThat Larkin card is underrated
