I keep Joe Torre on my bench purely because you can sub him defensively at C, 3B, 1B and he actually plays good defense at all three.

I start Schwarber, and then I platoon him with Perez (the one with max lefty splits). In terms of a true backup catcher that like would only be a defensive option no.

I try to be realistic and not having another guy who can play C doesn’t seem very realistic to me. I generally try not to PH with him until I have to either.

Short answer is yes, keep 2 catchers.
Long answer: you need flexibility. Last year Biggio was my backup and I ran a slew of catchers in there until I settled of Foxx. Foxx would start because he raked but his defense sucked. Bjggjo was a light hitter but had speed, could bunt if needed and position flexibility. Then I started running the combo of Foxx and Pudge.
This year the combo of JT and Schwarber are great. Catcher options this year just seem better. Also, how much bench do you use? I hardly ever use 3 of the 6. I count Ohtani as my 6th.

I don't use the bench too much except to PH. All my starter position players have 70s+ speed except 1B (Fielder) so not much need to pinch run. And not too much need to sub on defense late in game as my defense is pretty solid all around. I settled on starting JT with keeping Schwarbs as a LH power bat and backup catcher if needed even though it's doubtful. My squad currently is:

    2B - AS Trae Turner
    3B - Chipper
    RF - AS Acuna
    1B - HRD Fielder
    CF - Trout
    LF - Soriano
    SS - Franco
    C - ASG Realmuto

    Bench:
    Tatis
    MVP Bryant
    Braun (125/125 vs LHP)
    Schwarber
    Ortiz

I think that bench covers every need. Backup at every fielding position. Two RH batters who kill leftys and two LH batters who mash rightys. Elite speed/stealing with Tatis and 70+ speed with Bryant and Braun if needed.

If you want a good bench utility player try out Dee Strange-Gordon or Juan Pierre from the Marlins

I have both of them. I like all my players to have some pop. I did hit good with those cards when I've used them for TA in the past though.

I start Schwarber and have Salvy as backup/PH vs LHP.

Now that I have Piazza he might take Salvy’s spot. Only used him in the event so far, but he’s off to a good start.

Yeah they don’t have much pop but they get on base and are a menace on the base path.I use them situational.

Kind of... Schwarber and Perez. Was starting Schwarber in LF and Perez at C when facing LHP.

Wondering if you guys bother having a backup catcher or not? Not really needed imo unless you platoon based on splits or whatever. Or I guess if you pinch run for your C late in game. That's why I'm thinking ASG JT is super valuable. With him I don't think there would be a need to carry another C.

The beauty of realmuto is you don’t need to pinch run for him.

That’s why he’s the best catcher IMO. He’s a great hitter too. He’s a true catcher. In real life great catchers make pitchers better too by calling good pitches and locations. I don’t know if works in this game but Realmuto is really good at everything in this game.

On the flip side, he’s also a great guy to pitch run for a slower catcher. I sometimes have him on the bench to replace Bench or Salvy.

True, he’s faster than a lot of people in this game. There’s so many good catchers now,

I remember the dark ages, when good catchers were few and far between... either locked behind stub-heavy programs or impossible price tags in the market. Those were trying times...

Ohh you’ve played MLB for a while. Do you have a twitch? I play on XBoX so this is my first year. I almost bought PlayStation just for this game.

    You chose... wisely. 🏆

I don’t have a twitch. I guess I can consider myself an MLBTS veteran (I’m not old). Been playing since MLBTS 16, back when they still had the ump’s brush dusting off home plate to reveal the SDS logo.

    Tips from my experience:

    • Use zone hitting and bat with strike zone camera view.
    • Conquest is great, for both grinding stats and making stubs. It’s also a great way to start out each year with some free cards.
    • Don’t buy stubs. There are ways to make stubs without the micro-transactions.
    • Don’t buy packs. You aren’t Katniss Everdeen, and even if you were, the odds aren’t in your favor. Save your stubs.
    • Showdown will give you high BP, so best avoid that, for the sake of your health and that of your controllers.
    • Being a two way player in RTTS is kind of broken, so do that at your own peril. Best to wait until next year when they hammer out the issues.
    • Online play is also frustrating, be it the toxicity or the bad internet connections. I avoid for the sake of my sanity 😆
    • When batting, start from the left-middle of the zone and move the PCI accordingly.
    • Make the pitcher work. Always. But swing away if he throws you a cookie (especially 3-0 to spite La Russa).
    • If your stealing baserunner gets a slow jump, panic swing to try and prevent him from being thrown out. The game loves to crush your base stealing dreams at every opportunity.
    • Comerica and Coors are your friends for extra base hits.
    •.Collections are fun and rewarding!

I start Zunino; bat him 8th. If he gets on late, I’ll pinch run with Billy Hamilton, and then pinch hit with the Schwarbs, and double switch.

    So, short answer: yes. Schwarbs.
