It's because you get rewards for playing and the rewards are tied to having to be online.

I’m pretty old but I don’t read magazines or watch the E network.
Anyway youre online in conquest but you don’t connect through Xbox live and it’s not peer to peer so you don’t have to worry about packets being sent and lost. I don’t have Xbox live right now but I can play all offline modes and use marketplace.

The lag/latency only effects head to head because one of the systems acts as the host.
Conquest and "offline" DD plays on your local system.
Both require a connection to SDS servers to validate stats, etc. (This prevents running local memory hacks)

It's called multi-tasking. Try it..I've even played Demons Souls, Village, and Returnal (takes some getting used to that one) in the last week.
FIFA blew like Linda Lovelace milking Johnny Wad today though. Was in a SB game trying to score an objective for Atal (CM from Ligue 1). Needed 3 outside the box shots (which ain't no picnic) on World Class. Actually had 2 of them and the server disconnected me. Not only did I not get credit for the 2 goals..I lost the game 3-0. Which I was winning 5-0 when the DC happened.
So, I spent a whole lot of time on the EA forum chatting that one up. Now I'm back here again. Glad you noticed my absence. Missed u 2.
