Orel Hershiser Sucks (or A Poor Workman Blames Their Tools)

Man, I could not disagree more. He is easily one of the top 2 pitchers in the game for me, and one of the few I trust on AS and HOF.
But different cards work for different people, which makes for better Marc ups.
Stick with the guys that woke best for you.
He is a top guy for a lot of people. Which is kind of why I’m wondering why he’s not working for me. It’s maddening lol.

Best SPs are Paxton and Seaver.
I’m ok with Seaver. Paxton is another guy I don’t have a lot of success with. I take that back. I had a lot of success with him, but the second I prestiged him, he turned to [censored]. Almost the equivalent of giving a guy a big contract and then watching him regress horribly.
-
Yea I'm not sure how people pitch successfully with Hershisher either. I try to mix my pitches well, too, but he just gives up hits and homers like no one else. It doesn't seem to matter if it's All-Star or Hall of Fame either. His H/9 is just not that good either. I did take the time to prestige him recently, so we'll see if that helps. Maybe everyone's seen him way too much at this point in the year, too.
-
Yeah, I own Him. He only effective if you can't hit the high sinker. But I think this deep in the game, the high sinker is old news and people have adapted. So yeah [censored] hersh

Yea that's been my experience, too. I just don't think his other pitches are that good. I've given up so many homers off his changeup and slider. And everyone just lays off the curve or it just hangs in the zone. If your opponent can hit his sinker, he's gonna get rocked.

With as op as the sinker is, this is the first year I’ve been able to hit him consistently, so it’s not like he’s shutting me down. Maybe he’s just a very user dependent card. You either know how to use him, or you get crushed.

This goes with my point, neither of these guys do I even consider top 10 options
It’s all about tunneling pitches with any of the best pitchers. If you can do it with any top pitcher ( including Hersh), you will do very well ( comparatively....some guys are just freaks and can react to anything)
-
Orel is one my best and I only throw sinkers/cutters/ and the occasional changeup. Nothing else
-
I get destroyed everytime I use him too, I just don’t know how to use him

Sure, you can name two good pitchers. But... What would the best FIELD be? I'm sure you don't have an opinion on that. Because... How could there even be a "best field". There's no such thing.

Pretty much every year people either love him or hate him it seems.

Very true. Every year I want to love him, but can never get the hang of him. I tunnel pitches and he’s perfect for that, but for some reason I never succeed with him. It sucks cause I remember how phenomenal he was when I was a kid. Untouchable in the last few months of 88.

Ya I loved him as a kid. Also met him during the main event of the WSOP in 2010. Seemed like a really genuinely nice guy.

I’m in the industry. Never worked the main event myself, but have attended a few times. A couple of buddies who have worked the main event have also said he is pretty nice. Would like to meet him one of these days.

I prestiged Orel
I think his funky delivery and heavy sinker made him formidable early on, but everyone is used to him by now.
98 Orel > 136.1 innings 3.70 ERA 1.23 WHIP
99 Prestige Orel > 40.1 innings 6.69 ERA 1.56 WHIP

At least he does for me. I’m a decent pitcher, career ERA of 3.61, but for me Orel has an ERA of close to 8. Gets rocked every time I use him. It’s obviously my problem, as almost everyone else on the forum seems to have success with him and put him in their top five. I try to mix his sinker on the edges with the cutter and occasional curve, but he gives up single single homer almost every inning. How do you all pitch with him? Would love to know what I’m doing wrong.
The curve is your first mistake. Avoid at all costs.
Play the sinker/cutter and cutter/slider off each other. They look really similar out of his hand and it can be tough to pick up the difference until it's too late, especially on HOF. Use the changeup sparingly to keep your opponent off balance, and the curve no more than a few times per game when you've got them looking for a sinker or cutter up and put the curve in the dirt.
With all that said, he's been around for a long time so a lot of good players can hit him no matter how well you pitch. Against average or lesser players, he's still disgusting.
-
Also, and this might sound counter-intuitive, but keep the changeup in the zone. Don't try and put it below the zone. It's so much slower than the sinker/cutter that you want to fool your opponent into thinking it's one of those pitches and swing way out in front when it takes like 26 years to reach the plate. For some reason I've had success with that strategy even against great players.
But don't get dependent on that, it'll get timed up after a few ABs.

I promise this is the last time I'll ask you this this game cycle.
P.S. I've read on the Dark Web that Date Palm field will not be available in MLB 21.
