Stop your whining and throw a strike then. There, I fixed it.

Or, you could develop an actual good eye and just lay off those tempting pitches in the dirt you wanna swing at every single time only to be bailed out by a faulty game mechanic.

They should just be removed completely. You tap the button, you swing. You don't tap the button, you don't swing. Easy peasy.
I used to be against this, but I think I've come around on just getting rid of it.
Played against someone who was 165-40, anytime it was offspeed he check swung. He was able to sit fastball all game and won because he got check swings everytime I threw the offspeed. (And because the game will hang secondary pitches a ton if you don't throw the primary pitch, I was screwed)
The guy has great PCI placement, and he can hit the fastball, but he would not be 165-40 if the game did not allow him to check swing and he wouldn't be able to only sit fastball
Throw strikes with the off speed stuff till he stops checking. Then hit him with the fastball/sinker. I'm guessing you weren't throwing strikes with your off speed stuff.

Throwing off speed on the plate isn't a good idea because of how often something hangs. Fastballs can get away with hanging because of speed, offspeed often can't.
If pitching were better and good input meant hitting the corner with a offspeed pitch, I would.

Never should I be forced to throw strikes if my opponent shows tendencies to swing at balls more often than not. That's the whole purpose of this game from a pitcher's perspective. The mechanic is broken, end of story.

Getting constant check swings when you’re fooling your opponent is like good/good line outs, if you have a lot of them in the same game, it makes for a frustrating experience.

@beanball0571 said in Check swings:
In my last two games my opponents have combined for 48 checkswings, and 44 of them being balls. Some of these are completely ridiculous on how they aren’t strikes. So SDS let’s fix this where guys with 125 discipline can barely get a check swing but guys with low discipline can just check away. By the way a 91% percent check swing rate is astronomic
I had a game like that the other day too. Totally frustrating.

Foul balls on horribly timed swings to ,

I still stand by removing check swings all together, stated that in 19 as well.

That I agree with. Doesn't make sense why most curves hang unless you bury it. However, there are different off speed pitches that aren't as bad and if you use pitchers with high 80s for control, you barely hang anything.
Gotta know your opponent. I pitch really well with Hamels throwing the change as the primary pitch dotting the inside and outside corner. I'm not trying to be an [censored], but if your oppenent is checking every off speed pitch, who cares if you hang a few. He won't hit it. He's sitting fastball because he knows the off speed isn't going for a strike.

I guess you haven't played against high ranking guys before? They will be happy to deposit those hangers over the wall for your enjoyment.

Is he swinging at balls or check swinging at balls? If he's check swinging and not swinging at your balls, then yes, yes you are forced to throw strikes or else it's going to get ugly.

I have. You're absolutely right. They get crushed. But we're talking about a specific situation. If he's checking everything that's off speed, then it's because he's early or it's a ball. If you can determine that he's early because he's sitting on the fast ball, then all it takes is an inning or two of throwing a few strikes of off speed stuff and you'll see his tendencies change in my experience.

What you may not know is the guy is looking for a spot with the off-speed stuff. After a couple of innings, the guy will definitely know what type of break the pitches have. Especially if the guy only throws in the mid 90's with no fastball. It may work on the guys in the 400-700 range. Anyone above 800, different story.

Bottom line is, a person should not be able to start a swing and almost always stop it, whether they are doing it because it's a ball or because it's an offspeed and/or both.

I understand people saying take check swings out of game but it is part of the gm. They took out wind which is part of the gm and they took out balks which is part of the gm.
Really isn't a perfect answer for check swings. I do hate when people check swing every pitch cause they're only looking for fastballs, totally horrible gm flaw. IMO -

It's too late in the season to take out now.
It may break other things.
It's part of baseball, so I believe it stays. -

I'm glad you made a post about it. I've mentioned this before. I had a guy check swing almost 40 times in a game. I think he got all but 4-5 calls. This has ruined higher ranked games for me. Top players know how to check swing because they play/practice it 4+ hrs per day.
I do not experience this. I check swing a lot and I’d say 1/3 get called for strikes if not more.
