Just playing the game earns you a ton of stubs. Play the event and sell rewards/duplicates. Showdowns also decent stubs if you can finish most of the challenges/the final boss. Good xp as well and there's some coins in the xp path. Do all the player programs/conquest maps.
This is probably the easiest way unless like a few others mentioned, you're willing to spend real money which most of us aren't. I would also add that flipping cards is a great way to make stubs. I finished the LS collection a while ago without spending any money to buy stubs and I really only play RS. If you can flip on a daily basis there are some good stubs to be made and you'd be surprised how fast you can finish it off.

Grinded the market nonstop while catching up on tv shows for two weeks in the beginning of quarantine. Got mantle and quit the game for 3 months cause I didn’t even want to look at it anymore.

The last market crash just happened to hit right when trout was all i needed for mantle, so I ended up getting him for like 180k. Hopefully you run into some similar good luck along the way :).

I sold all of the inning bosses, that helped a lot. The only issue is the guys that are 90+ diamond, those will cost you a lot of stubs. Selling every card that you earn helps you get closer if you really want him.

If you willing to put the time in you can grind some showdown for Team affinity. sell everything you get from packs , you also get plenty of stubs + you can sell the Stage 3 Players and in return buy up cards to complete collections .

There are some videos on YouTube that help. Basically knock out one division/ league at a time. Sell everything you pull from packs. I was lucky enough to get Scherzer in a pack but I had to buy the rest.
Place low buy bids on some of the gatekeepers and you might get lucky. Patience is the key. But those sets really give you a nice jumpstart on Trout. I started the year late so I did buy some stubs but mantle is worth it and you get a ton of useful cards along the way and get stubs and xp from sets. -

It's hilarious seeing how many people hold such disdain towards anyone who uses a credit card to get their team.

94 Wagner is still on my team
93 Gwynn is useable
I like Mike Schmidt so I used the 92 early. His 99 is attainable tho.
92 Alomar is useable but outclassed.
91? Giambi is good but again outclassed at this point. -

I like Wagner and Doolittle in the pen, I still use both of them. Schmidt and Gwynn are solid. Giambi is a great left hand bat off the bench. I also found those LS guys to play above their stats. Ls Arenado was surprising good if you need a 3rd baseman. Same with LS Trout , LS Yelich and LS Judge. Ls betts also raked for me online. The pitchers like Verlander, Schezer and Deagrom were all similar but very solid. I thought Cole sucked. I'm also still using LS Chapman as my closer because I refuse to spend that much on the Sig. Ls Hader was good for a while but too much like Chapman so I replaced him with some MOTM cards.
Basically it gives you some cards you might not use or tryout otherwise and in the long run saves you from making a bunch of small upgrades because you have all these locked in cards you cant do anything else with. I was down to 5k when I completed the Mantle set and I'm back up to 250k just from playing the game, not investing in the market and saving coins. -
