Baseball Cards.

I collected obsessively from ‘81 through ‘88 or so. I would buy them by the case from candy wholesalers that my family knew. There are probably 100,000 cards sitting in the original 35-pack boxes in my mom’s attic. Nothing crazy in value, though. None of those years appreciated all that well. All those Ron Kittle rookie cards were in vain, ha ha.
Sealed packs, cases of 81-85 would bring you some good money. There's been quite a bit of a revival of 1987, too. Pretty sure 88 is still junk lol.

Anyone else here collect? Pretty sure tge wife is going to make me sleep on the couch for the rest of the week; as I just dropped $800 on a few boxes/packs of cards in the last week. Lol
Bought a jumbo hobby box of 2020 Topps Series 2, a hobby jumbo of 2020 Prizm, 5 blaster boxes of Prizim along with 10 fat packs, 2 2020 Bowman Mega Boxes, and a hobby jumbo box of 2020 Bowman.
Hobby boxes give better odds of sigs or relics?

Sore subject for me... When I was a kid (39 now) my Dad was HUGE into collecting... cards, auto's, memorabilia... We lived about 2 hr's from Cooperstown so we were there for every HOF induction and it was always a great time. I got to meet pretty much every living member of the HOF plus all the living Negro Leaguers.... The Players that stand out in my mind were Stan Musial who played a mean harmonica andTed "Double Duty" Radcliffe. They were genuinely nice guys. At one point we pretty much had every baseball card minus the the nosebleeds like Wagner, rookie Mantle, etc. But the $$ we had invested in that stuff was staggering (for example we had a pair of Ty Cobbs spikes, and one of Babe Ruth's bats). My dad even lent some stuff to the HOF from time to time.
Long story short it's all gone, it's one of the reason's I don't collect things to this day. There aren't any things you can collect that you can't lose or someone can't take away from you.

Typically, yes, but you pay for it. There are plenty of sites that will show you the odds of pulling this or that, and hobby boxes will tell you of guaranteed hits.

Got tons of cards from when I was a kid. Not sure they are worth anything anymore tho smh

Yes and no. Some dogs and relics are hobby exclusive.
And some are retail exclusive. -

Did you pull any Jasson Dominguez? Could be a pretty penny if he lives up to the hype.
Havent touched the hobby box yet; but in one of the extra Camo packs in the one day pack; I pulled a Camo Dominguez. Also pulled a Dylan Cease R/W/B auto #7/50.

Hobby boxes and packs usually have better odds but higher cost. As the other poster said, it is down to Topps/Bowman with a MLB license (team logos), and Panini/Donruss with the MLBPA license (just the players with airbrushed out logos). Prizm is a special release from Panini. Fat packs are the packs you see at retail stores (Target and Walmart) that usually consist of like 30+ cards. You can also have boxes that will get you around 70 cards, and jumbo boxes (but I can never find them) with even more, I think around 120 or so.
Cards are severely inflated right now because so many people with extra time on their hands are getting back into it, and celebs and even players are talking about cards that they collect. If you want a really good way to get back into it, I have found that a majority of the Twitter people that I interact with are really inviting. There are a ton that do stack sales of individual cards, you pick what you want, they give you the total including shipping. Also you have "breakers" that buy boxes and cases, sell spots for teams or random spots in their breaks and then ship out all carss that are opened from that box that match the team you pick or receive.
There is a ton of info and no one stop "cards for dummies" space to pick it all up. But good luck as I just recently got back into it too and spent about $300 of the "stimulus" that I got lol

Question?? Maybe a dumb one. I've been going through the cards to put them in order . I've noticed I have a couple dups. But the dups are like gold based. Example Max muncy card. I looked it up and topps is selling the card for 100 bucks. Does that mean that's what the card is worth???
Edir: Nvm I found it. Its a gold parrallel

Collected when I was younger 1959-1976. Unfortunately had no idea how to keep the cards preserved. Had anywhere from a couple hundred to almost complete sets from each year. Of course packs were 5 to 10 cents at the time. Got my allowance and yard mowing money and headed to the store each time a new series came out. Now that I'm getting older and have no one who is into collecting around I have been selling them off on Ebay. Still holding on to a few of my favorite sets 1968 1969 1970 1972 and some stars extras like a white letter 69 Mantle. All are complete and in EXMT to NM condition as I upgraded the poor cards over the years. Gonna eventually give to my grandson and maybe he can get a few thousand for them towards his college fund.

Collected while I grew up in the 80's and 90's, served 20 years in the Navy, then last year I decided to buy a pack at a Mariner's game. I pulled a Vald Jr auto from a blaster pack, the following week went to another game, bought another pack and got a Eddie Rosario auto. So, I ended starting to collect again. Last season and so far this season I have spent probably about $15,000 on cards. I go with the mid-range hobby boxes like Tier 1, Five Star, Tribute, etc.

Went to a yard sale yesterday and got a bunch of Kobe Bryant Topps and Fleer Ultra rookies for $20 a piece!! Ha! Best score in forever. Plus got a bunch of Jordan stuff at 2013 prices. The dude was using Beckett’s that were 7 years old. Plus got a bunch of Jordan stuff and some decent baseball cards too.
And got a nice beer mirror at the same place. Was awesome.
The newer stuff I’ve been buying is Casey Mize and Riley Greene Bowman autos. Hopefully they come through for me.

I collected a lot in the 1990s. I still have a few unopened Topps packs from '86, '87 and '88. I don't have much of current value I don't think, but before he died in 2008, my dad left me a Billy Ripken "F--- Face" card in his bedroom dresser. Does anyone else have that card?
-
I collect as well, unfortunately, the current pandemic, and a new pool liner has put me in a position where I cant buy cards right now. but I plan on getting back into it once things start to become normal again.

Steady collector since ‘77. Always up for trades, lol. Entire room dedicated to collection. It’s a fun hobby and the kids love to rip packs in search of the hits. Setting up a nice starter collection for grandson and hopefully he’ll be interested.
The sad thing about it today is high end is basically pushing out the younger collectors. However Topps does have good products designed, and out, that target youngsters: Opening Day and Big Leagues.
It’s still fun for me and my wife doesn’t mind that my inner child shows.
