Anyone else here collect? Pretty sure tge wife is going to make me sleep on the couch for the rest of the week; as I just dropped $800 on a few boxes/packs of cards in the last week. Lol
Bought a jumbo hobby box of 2020 Topps Series 2, a hobby jumbo of 2020 Prizm, 5 blaster boxes of Prizim along with 10 fat packs, 2 2020 Bowman Mega Boxes, and a hobby jumbo box of 2020 Bowman.
Did you pull any Jasson Dominguez? Could be a pretty penny if he lives up to the hype.
-
I did well on my Bowman Mega Boxes (I actually found 4 at Target). I got 3 autographs from 4 boxes, nothing too crazy though.
My 2020 Topps Series 2 jumbo box was atrocious, though.

Can one of you point me in the direction that describes the current state or baseball cards? The OP listed 5 different things, and I have know idea what anyone is. Is there a baseball cards for dummies page somewhere? I bought a couple individual Dodger cards for my son for Christmas, which have since been destroyed. But, I'm curious how this all works now. The last time I bought cards was when I was 10 at the local card store, which has now been closed for a good 20 years.

Curious about this too. If one were to start completely from scratch...no cards....what direction would you point someone in?

Basically, it's two manufacturers right now - Topps (which also makes Bowman) and Panini (which also makes Donruss). Topps is the only one with an MLB license, so they show team logos while Panini only has an MLBPA license, so no team logos.
And the hobby is in a huge bubble right now. Packs are hard to find at stores and are bought up as fast as they're displayed. Prices are high on boxes/packs as well as singles. Not sure where to point you, but find a local card shop, if you have one, and start asking questions. They're usually pretty helpful.

I PC Trevor Story

I collect sometimes. I've only opened a $3 pack this year lol. I open the Topps! I have a Trout card worth $30 currently. Maybe a few hundred in 10 years!
-
Have been opening several '87 & '88 packs. Pulled some nice ones including a McGwire rookie.
-
Autos and relics are what I like to collect.
-
I collected when I was a kid, but haven't bought cards in a long time. I have like four binders of them, most ranging from the early 80s to the mid 90s.
-
I wish I had treated my rookie cards better when I was younger, I have a Javier Baez 2011 Bowman Chrome prospect card among others.
-
Diamond dynasty got me back in to collecting in 2017, because off the real topps cards in the game. Since then I’ve built a huge Felix Hernandez collection and I basically collect any rare Mariners cards I can find. This year I have focused on Kyle Lewis and Jarred Kelenic and have spent waaaaay too much money scooping up auto cards of theirs
-
I collected obsessively from ‘81 through ‘88 or so. I would buy them by the case from candy wholesalers that my family knew. There are probably 100,000 cards sitting in the original 35-pack boxes in my mom’s attic. Nothing crazy in value, though. None of those years appreciated all that well. All those Ron Kittle rookie cards were in vain, ha ha.

Sealed packs, cases of 81-85 would bring you some good money. There's been quite a bit of a revival of 1987, too. Pretty sure 88 is still junk lol.

Hobby boxes give better odds of sigs or relics?

Sore subject for me... When I was a kid (39 now) my Dad was HUGE into collecting... cards, auto's, memorabilia... We lived about 2 hr's from Cooperstown so we were there for every HOF induction and it was always a great time. I got to meet pretty much every living member of the HOF plus all the living Negro Leaguers.... The Players that stand out in my mind were Stan Musial who played a mean harmonica andTed "Double Duty" Radcliffe. They were genuinely nice guys. At one point we pretty much had every baseball card minus the the nosebleeds like Wagner, rookie Mantle, etc. But the $$ we had invested in that stuff was staggering (for example we had a pair of Ty Cobbs spikes, and one of Babe Ruth's bats). My dad even lent some stuff to the HOF from time to time.
Long story short it's all gone, it's one of the reason's I don't collect things to this day. There aren't any things you can collect that you can't lose or someone can't take away from you.

Typically, yes, but you pay for it. There are plenty of sites that will show you the odds of pulling this or that, and hobby boxes will tell you of guaranteed hits.

Got tons of cards from when I was a kid. Not sure they are worth anything anymore tho smh

Yes and no. Some dogs and relics are hobby exclusive.
And some are retail exclusive. -
