I turned mine on again after seeing this thread. It is much better. The game sounds dull without it, so I will leave it on now despite the repetition.

SOLVED!!!
I was unknowingly clicking R1 with my right index finger when I pressed the X button. Of course, it only mattered with a runner on base. I played a couple of conquest games while consciously holding my right index finger away from the R1 button - and the baserunning was correct every single time!
Now, I just have to get comfortable with a grip that doesn't wrap around the bumper button, which shouldn't be too difficult. For anyone else with this or a similar problem, make sure you aren't touching the bumper (R1) or trigger (R2) which stops the runner. I have seen people complaining about the runner "freezing" on the basepath and an accidental trigger click could be their issue.
Thanks again to all that helped, but especially @GixxerRyder750_PSN.

Are you on PS5? Do you have the setting on your triggers where the sensitivity matters with how hard you press the trigger? I prefer a quick trigger finger so to speak so I had to turn that thing off. I use Button Classic baserunning and I've never experienced what you're experiencing so I'm not sure what the cause would be.
Thank you for this idea. Yes, I have a PS5. I will check these settings later.
Your post has also caused me to think about the way that I hold and use the controller. It is very possible that I am accidentally and unknowingly clicking the R1 button when I make contact with the ball. I sort of squeeze the controller, press the X button too hard, and even move my hands upward when I "swing". (Yes, I understand that my excessive thumb pressure and erratic hand movement is ineffective and unnecessary, but I just can't help myself. I may need an intervention.)
I will report back after I get a chance to try out this solution because it might also help others if it solves the problem.

Sounds like your trigger is sticking.
Odd that it does it with both of my controllers.

Use your triggers. I am PS5 and use my triggers to stop the runner in the middle of the play then it should give you full control again. I think I would just have to see what you're doing or what is happeningI do use the L1 trigger, and it does give me full control again. But too late to prevent the force out.
I agree you would have to see it to understand what I am doing wrong, and I appreciate all of your patient attempts to help me. I am trying to find some gameplay videos to see if it happens to others. If I do, I will link it.

I tried analog and it doesn't make any difference. I hit a ground ball to the gap between first and second with a runner on first base. I point the stick toward the runner. The runner takes one step toward second base on his own and then goes back to first BEFORE it gives me control. THEN I gain control of the runner and can send him to second base, but it is too late. The real problem here is that the runner should never go back to first under any method (including auto baserunning) because he is subject to a force out.
Any other ideas to fix this situation? Does anyone else have this issue or am I the only one?

I could be wrong but even in the case of buttons you must use the sticks to slide anyways.
You're right about that, so that is certainly a factor favoring analog.
I will try analog again for a few games and see if it solves the issue from my original post. That's really what interests me. I want the game to stop taking away my baserunners by going back to the previous base on a ground ball through the infield.

@Orcin52_PSN yeah I'm sorry man idk what to tell you then. I experienced exactly what you are experiencing and I experimented with the other methods and analog worked best for me.
So you are saying you do not experience this issue with analog baserunning, but you do see it with button?
-
@AdeptOfMemory_PSN said in Baserunning:
@Orcin52_PSN I've tried both and IDK how to answer that other than it just works better. It's the most effective way to control your base runners at least from my experience. It's like the differences between using timing, zone, or pinpoint with pitching and batting. Less RNG and less opportunities for the CPU to take control of your player. I would say just try it out and see if you like and it works for you.
I have used analog quite a bit, and I didn't see any difference in the ability to control the runner. It's simply a matter of preference. It feels more comfortable for me to use a button to select the runner and the d-pad to select the base. Using the stick to select a runner was not always reliable for me as I would sometimes point at the wrong spot and miss the runner entirely.
Regardless, I don't see how the use of analog would result in "less opportunities for the CPU to take control" of the baserunner. The runners are already under CPU control before the user intervenes, and you still have to gain control of the runner before he starts, stops, and reverses course. If you could do that with the stick, you could also do it with a button, and perhaps even faster with a button.

Baserunning is a bit funky but I also recommend using analog and pointing to the base runner with your left stick and hitting the button/base you want the runner to go.
Why is this better than using the button to select the runner and using the d-pad to select the base? How would using the analog method prevent the issue that I am experiencing?
-
I hit the ball, so the button worked for that. Before I touch another button, the behavior happens. So how could this be a controller issue?
P.S. If it truly is a controller issue, I would happily buy a new controller to fix it.
-
No matter whether baserunning is set to auto or another option (I use button select), the runner will often break for second with contact, then stop, and then return to first on a ground ball through the infield or obvious base hit to the outfield. I am frequently thrown out at second base on a ground ball hit to center or right field because the runner starts and then stops before the game allows me to control him. I lose valuable time as opposed to the runner breaking for second on contact and then letting me tell him to return to first if needed. This costs me a hit also, because the play is ruled a fielder's choice, therefore making program advancement slower. It's a force play so he should just run on contact on a ground ball anyway.
I am doing something wrong, or is this outcome just unavoidable due to a bug or poor programming?
-
I would make the auto baserunning feature work properly.

I mean should I really feel bad people are finally not being rewarded for swinging at everything and staying alive using a contact swing until you see a bad pitch?
No. I said that people could offer some kind words, advice, or encouragement for those that are struggling with the change. Another alternative would be to say nothing. It sounds like you wanted the game to be more difficult, so it's good for you. I am just saying that it was not good for me and others.
I don't think it is a good idea to change game mechanics in the middle of a product cycle. If the game started that way, then I might feel differently. Having the timing changed after putting 250 hours into the game is quite frustrating in my opinion.
-
The hitting has definitely changed. SDS said so in their patch notes: "Foul balls: We’ve made some tweaks to foul balls, primarily impacting the Competitive gameplay style. With poor swing timings, users will now experience more swings and misses." Obviously, some people will deny the facts to suit their narrative, but no amount of gaslighting will alter the fact that the game mechanics were changed.
People adjust to change differently. Some can blow right through it because they are just that good. Others are more challenged. For me, it is like SDS raised the mound six inches and moved it six inches closer to home plate. I was already frustrated with game due to seasons and terrible content design. This change to the hitting mechanics has made the game even worse for me personally. I am close to moving on but I am waiting to see if I can eventually adjust.
Those who are having no trouble with the changes could show some kindness and compassion toward their fellow players that are having more difficulty. Maybe even offer some encouragement. Of course, that's not the way people operate these days, so we see posts denying the change ever happened or bragging about how fast they have adjusted.

It's horrible. The cards are boring, the programs are boring, the pace is still too slow due to awkward program requirements, and the one wild card slot does nothing to help the fact that I can't play the cards that I earned with my previous 200 hours of grinding.
-
@Firefly4917_XBL said in did they clamp down on hitting after the update because i cant hit nothing:
The OP may be correct or perhaps player concentration, patience and focus can be variable from day to day.
I think the latter is probably the reason for me. The game has become tedious and boring, and that is probably showing up in my play. I am sick of grinding with garbage cards in dull programs to earn collection fodder, so I hurry through the games in order to get the program progress and end up with poor results.
-
I thought it was just me. I am playing conquest or vs CPU on veteran. Every perfect/perfect is a line drive out. Nothing goes into the gap, it is always straight at a fielder. Every bronze pitcher is dotting the corners or throwing breaking pitches that would make 99's jealous. I just played a 7-inning game on conquest and lost 1-0.
The DD mode has become frustrating and no longer fun. I am using cards that I don't want to use to play games that I don't want to play to earn cards that I don't want to own. The rainbow land where I can use any card (assuming that I can ever earn the good ones) is still months of grinding in the future.
NCAA FB can't come soon enough.

They are making these names up right? I have never heard Tommy Edman be referred to as Eddie and as a 3rd baseman?
I've never heard him referred to as "Eddie", but maybe it was during the weekend where players used their nicknames. I tuned out for that nonsense. He has played 94 games at third, mostly over his first two seasons, but it is a stretch to have that as his primary position.
SDS is embarrassing themselves with the return of these awful incognito cards. What's next, Godzilla?
