Last year we all gave SDS a hard time on the outcome of perfect input for our hitting. Regardless of the statistics they gave us of an ~.850 batting average on perfect swings, and only a 2% chance foul ball (now 1% for this year), that never seemed to be the case. So this year, I decided to track my first 100 perfect input swings and see how many hits, outs, and foul balls occurred.

These statistics come only from online play (BR and Ranked Seasons) and they are very basic statistics. On balls in play with perfect input I was 79-100. That is, obviously, a .790 batting average, which is well below the .850 that we were told by the development team. I also hit 11 foul balls with perfect input, which is a 9.9% foul rate on perfect input (11-111), much higher than the claimed 1% for this year.

I'm already in the process of tracking my next 100 perfect swings in much greater depth, accounting for type of perfect swing (grounder, liner, flyball), the result, whether it was a single, double, triple or HR, etc.

What are your thoughts on these statistics? Does it make sense to hit under .800 on perfect input? And is there anything else I should be tracking on these perfect input swings?

You should include all perfect/perfects no matter the game mode. Separate them if you will, but those numbers should also be included. From my time playing this year so far, human opponents pitch far more down the middle than even the cpu on rookie.

All games/modes combined I am generous in saying I'm batting .500 on perfect/perfect swings.

I'm more interested in online statistics as I don't usually have a difficult time beating the CPU even if my perfects aren't falling, but, at your wishes, I'll start tracking my offline numbers too, in a separate category.

Okay. I’m going to have some fun (check out my name).

If we assume SDS is telling the truth, you statistic of 0.79 would produce a z score of

    Z = (0.79 - 0.85)/sqrt(.85*.15/100) = -1.68

At that value, the chances of you getting a 79% hit rate or less would be around a 4.65% probability.

In other words you have a 5% chance of being that “unlucky.”

Now you do with that what you will. I’m not trying to be argumentative. Just adding a little context. I also do pack probabilities if you’re interested.

Please share more data, because now I’m curious.

That's good to know! A group of my friends actually give each other a hard time and say, "Tom gets all the luck, so you got to be the unlucky one!" lol. I will continue to provide statistics at 100 AB intervals!

I hit a homerun with Finest DeGrom just the other night. I love lefty swinging pitchers in general.

Never tell your girlfriend/wife/husband/whatever that you will go to bed "as soon as I pull a diamond player." Because what happens? You end up opening all the packs you have earned from the inning program so far, then buy two 50 bundles, and open 184 packs just to pull live series Trevor Story.

    I've learned my lesson.

Hey when you guys say “batters eye” when talking about a stadium what do you actually mean. My first year so excuse my Noobness

The batters eye is the big square/rectangle in centerfield. It's used for a backdrop for batters so they don't see the crowd/other distractions irl.

  • How many SP do you use consistently?
  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

I have an 8-10 man starting rotation that I've started using to good success. Kluber, Hershiser, Maddux, Sale, Wood, Kershaw, Hamels, and Johnson are all pitchers that I feel good about going in to a game. On top of them, I rotate in Seaver, Pearson, Wainwright, Lee, or any other SP I want to try out at any given point. I usually have at least 2 or 3 SP with 100% energy due to how I rotate them in and out of my rotation.

Does anyone else utilize a non-traditional rotation?

  • Best surprise card of the year
  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

Silver Slugger Daniel Murphy. I used my CAP at 2B for quite a while until someone in Discord chat said Murph was sneaky good. I picked him up when he was around 20k I think, and he hasn't left my lineup since. Batting .370 with him with almost a 1.200 OPS in well over 500 ABs. He's easily the best value I have gotten out of a card all year.

  • When the bats go cold
  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

I have a lot of games where I'm squaring pitches up but they don't drop and I start to get frustrated. Then I just think, "if I keep squaring it up, they'll fall eventually. Just keep swinging at good pitches." Usually around the 4th or 5th inning hits start falling if I keep a good mindset.

Also, adjusting your batting camera might help. I switch between SZ and SZ High when I go through a slump. Sometimes changing that camera angle can make your PCI placement just a little bit better, which also helps you get more hits.

  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

It bugs me to no end when you're up like 8-0 in the 6th inning with two outs and you can throw a ball on an 0-2 count and they're like, "hey, a walk here could set them up for something really productive. You don't want to go into the later innings down big!"

Chill, dude. It's a shutout going and I threw a single ball with two outs. lol

  • WS Tips/ Help
  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

Be patient and wait for your pitch. It's okay not to swing at strikes, especially a perfect pitch on the black, if you aren't looking for it.
The more patient you are, the easier it is to recognize your opponent's pitching patterns, which gives you more opportunities to look for certain pitches.
On the other side of that coin, don't get too predictable when you're pitching. Mix your pitches and locations, and never feel like you've figured your opponent out. Always assume they are adjusting.
Only play one or two ranked games per sitting.

  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

Congrats, man! I made WS for the first time a few months ago. RS can be stressful, but there's not many better feelings in this game than seeing that 900+ rating again. Probably the only thing I've felt better about was my only 12-0 run in BR this year.

  • MVP Bryant
  • Jholla31_PSNJ Jholla31_PSN

His swing takes some time to get used to, but having gold defense at third is completely different than silver. He's made plenty of diving plays for me and is more consistent than anyone else I've put there.

I probably have a 10+ ERA with POTM James Paxton, but I feel like he always has a chance to no hit me when he faces me.
