Baserunning help

There’s got to be a solution to baserunning. In the 9th inning inning of my last game, I had a runner run back to first on a base hit even though I manually selected him and pressed second. I did that because he froze on his own. But he went to first before he started to run. Then the next pitch, I tried to steal second with my boy, Henderson, but he went half way and stopped. Is it possible to switch running to auto? Would that help? Am I inadvertently hitting a button to make runners freeze? This is ludicrous.
