To be fair, current players are going to have more in season reasons to give them a card, plus their live series card.
Kurtz having 5 cards is fair. Live series > Pipeline > 1st career HR > Spotlight > Milestone
Not a single one of these cards should have been skipped because the other cards existedBut they have certainly done a terrible job with legends this year. I feel the reduction in TA cards is mostly to blame.
-
I'm still waiting on a Seager upgrade for the Rangers
-
I'd love to see a lot more lower-tier legends - like I don't think it would cost that much to round up a bunch of them who would rather be in the game than not be in the game. If you're a decent player from the early 90s, how much would you need to be like "sure, I'd like to be in a video game"
SDS has no reason to do this, though, because it probably doesn't make any money
-
^ I feel like they could've made cards for Jeff Conine and Luis Castillo (2B for the Marlins in the 90/00s, not the current pitcher) for being inducted into the Marlins HOF.
It would've been cool to put Jeff and Griffin in the same lineup. Jeff could've been a card with a rating in the 80s. Castillo had zero pop, so there's a limit to how good they could've made him.

Dee Gordon had no problems having a fun card to use
But they dont care about things like that.
David Wright, one of the most popular players in Mets history and as good as any 3B in baseball not named ARod during his career, had his number retired and they did nothing but give him a moment at some point. Valenzuela was the last guy to get his number retired and he got a full program and a card series designed around the event.

@Teak2112_MLBTS
It appears David Wright will be a new cornerstone soon but the lack of love for Captain America is disrespectful. Btw, does anybody else miss Incognito? -
@Dolenz_PSN I knew right when I saw the subject line that this was my man Doly posting it haha
-
@Th3_Th1n_M4n-o_0_PSN Man I've been waiting on the 2022 Goldy MVP card for years

Sadly, I have spent far more time on the app I created with AI than I have the game the last few months.
Every time I think I am done with it, I keep keep coming up with a new report or some tweak to the system.
Currently I am debating, but not sure yet, of tweaking my meta rating on a position by Position or at least a group of positions. Right now I show Salvador Perez as the worst 99 but I know a huge part of that is due to his lack of speed.
Seems like a messy rabbit hole to go down though.

81 games / 5 cards = 16 games per card
Still excessive when people cry so much about Schwarber who may end up with 500 homers. I say this as someone who never used a single Schwarber card in my entire life.

Which card should they have not given out, knowing only what was known at the time the card was issued?

First off, not every single person who hit a homer has a 1st career homer card.

So you oppose Topps Now in general then? You want to make the game worse by removing cards for no good reason?
-
One of the things that sets DD apart from something like 2K MyTeam is that it does a pretty good job of addressing what is actually happening in the season.
Topps Now, Monthly Awards, the one off programs we have been getting for Kershaw, Verlander, and Alonso
This is DD's biggest strength, and while I get frustrated when they exclude certain cards the notion that a guy like Kurtz has too many cards is detrimental to the core of DD: it should continue to provide cards that reflect the 2025 season
If at some point, after already giving Kurtz a few cards, they decided to introduce a retro draft series or something then absolutely he should not get a card there. But every card he has gotten was deserved and makes the game better.

Let's look at the Topps Now cards issued that week:
Included in MLB The Show
Nick Kurtz - 1st MLB HR
Christian Koss - 1st MLB HR (also Grand Slam)
Justyn-Henry Malloy - Walk-off HR, also doubles as Rookie card
Mick Abel - MLB Debut
Moises Ballesteros - 1st MLB HRHere are the rest of the Topps Now cards issued at the time:
Wilmer Flores - given a Spotlight card that week
"Superstar" cards that SDS rarely, if ever, awards Topps Now cards for:
Cody Bellinger
Rafael Devers
Pete-Crow Armstrong
Bryce Harper
Shohei Ohtani
Aaron Judge
Fernando Tatis Jr
Javier BaezThe Rest:
Jackson Jobe - TA 1 Jolt Card
Ezequiel Tovar - TA 2 Color Rush card issued on same day
Heyeseong Kim - New Threads card
Jacob Wilson - Spotlight card one month earlier
Jung Hoo Lee - TA2 Color Rush card issued on same day
Isaac Paredes - Spotlight card issued 1 week later + ASG card one month later
Junior Caminero - TA 1 Jolt card + Spotlight card 2 weeks later + HRD card one month laterUpon further review, the only other players SDS could have awarded that Topps Now slot to were Paredes and Caminero. And if they had, they'd have run into the exact same Kurtz problem of giving multiple cards to the same player in a short span.
D_mned if you do, D_mned if you don't...
-
Bottom line is Kurtz having 5 cards is a GOOD thing and is purely positive.
It is unrelated to stuff like Reggie Sanders or Babe Ruth only having a single 85 so far (probably the only time anyone has ever mentioned those two in the same sentence...)
-
A large majority of these players don't need or deserve more than 1 card besides their live series. But when you have a game that's main focus is collections, they run out of players. They need to calm down the collections, different sets next year and use their brains to come up with new content.
-
@Rubbaneck34_XBL
Collections are money-makers for this game. Having the collection rewards is the meta, so obviously, they're not going to stop milking them if it brings profit. -
2 years ago we had more cards but collections were able to completed (for the card rewards) without stubs. Last year they cut the number of cards but collections were still stub free. The collection monetization is a special feature of this year's game, at least compared to the prior two years
